The aims of this study are: (1) to describe the use of the Role Play method in teaching speaking English for the fifth graders of MIN Poso, and (2) to determine whether the Role Play method is effective or not for the fifth graders of MIN Poso. The researcher uses descriptive method to explain the result of teaching learning process by using Role Play Method. Data are collected from observation of teaching and learning processes and documentation, and analyzed by using the theory of Landouse, Susan House, and Adam and Bidle. The results of this study are (1) English teachers in MIN Poso use four steps in teaching English speaking through Role Play method. (2) Role Play method is effectively used in teaching the fifth graders of MIN Poso to speak English because more students are active and it can increase students’ interest to speak English language.Keywords: English to young learners, speaking, role play method

The objectives of this research are to find out politeness strategies used by Joe Louis Clark and the students in the Lean on Me movie and to find out the dominant types of politeness strategy used by Joe Louis Clark in the movie. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach. The data were in the form of utterances which contains politeness strategies. The data source is Lean on Me movie script. The data are collected by note-taking technique which were later classified and analyzed under the theories of Brown and Levinson (1987). The result of this research shows that there are four types of politeness strategies used by the main characters in Lean on Me movie when having conversation with the students and teacher. The politeness strategies were Bald-on record strategy, Positive politeness strategy, Negative politeness strategy, and Off record strategy (12). Positive politeness strategy has the highest frequency among other strategies since the dialogues are among teacher and students.Keywords: politeness interaction, interaction among teacher and students, positive politeness strategy

This study aims to determine the factors that influence participation to speaking English. This research is conducted at Universitas Sintuwu Maroso Poso. This research is qualitative in nature. The subjects are 36 students of English Education Department who enrolled in Speaking course in academic year 2017/2018. Data are taken through interview, questionnaire, and documentation. The results showed that the highest factor affecting students’ participation in speaking English are lack of basic language skills (grammar and vocabulary) and feedback during activities (lecturer to students).Keywords: factors of students’ speaking English, basic language skills, feedback during activities, classroom participation

This research aims to describe the procedures of teaching English implemented by teachers of English at SMPN 3 Poso Kota Utara. This research is qualitative in nature. Data are collected by observation and documentation, then analyzed in two steps: firstly, the data of English learning process are observed then mapped to find a clearer description; secondly, procedure used during teaching and learning process are identified, and; thirdly, the procedures are decided in terms of appropriateness. The findings show that teachers of English at SMPN 3 Poso Kota Utara strictly followed lesson plan and syllabus as guidelines for teaching, used scientific learning as teaching approach, and the models of teaching and learning practice in this classroom are genre approach learning and discovery learning.Keywords: 2013 curriculum, teaching English, genre-based approach, discoverylearning approach

This study aims to: 1) analyze the application of compensation strategy in teaching reading ; and 2) identify the students’ achievement level in reading using compensation strategy to the Eighth Grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Poso Pesisir. The research method is descriptive qualitative research. The data are the teacher and students’ interaction, and the students’ achievement. The samples are the Eighth Grade students SMP N 1 Poso Pesisir consist of 22 students. The qualitative data were obtained by doing observation and taking field notes. The result from the test evaluation, the students got good marks. It means that the students understood the text. They can answer their test correctly. In the time, the use of compensation strategies can help the students in guessing difficult words, so when the researchers gave them the test, they understood of how to answer it. Hence it can be concluded that compensation strategy through guessing intelligently is one of teaching aid that the students and the teacher need it in order to maintain interest and motivation, and increasing their understanding in reading descriptive text.Keywords: compensation, teaching reading, literacy practice, EFL junior highschool students

This research aims to analyze the speech style of the teachers in movies. The theories that were applied in this research are Joos theory (1967) which concern about speech style, and also the theory of context from Hymes (1975) that influences the speech style (SPEAKING). Design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The instrument of collect the data use the transcript of three movies they are Dead Poets Society, Dangerous Minds, and Freedom Writers. The result ofthis research shows that the most dominant speech style used by the teachers inmovies is consultative style and the teachers used this style since they want to giveopportunity to the students to participate in learning process.Keywords: consultative speech style, teacher characters, education-themedmovies

The objectives of this research are to find out level of questions used by the teachers in teaching English at SMP Negeri Poso Kota Utara and to find out of students’ responses from the teacher’s questions. Researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research is obtained from observation at SMP5 Poso Kota Utara and SMP 1 Poso Kota Utara. The objective of this study is to find out the roles of teacher in dangerous mind movie. It focused on LouAnne Johnson as main character in the movie limited the interaction between teacher and students in the classroom. Descriptive qualitative was used as the research design. The Dangerous Minds movie is source of data in this research. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation method. There are four roles of teacher in this movie: assessor; prompter, tutor, and observer. This research aims to describe the use of comic strip in teaching English vocabulary to seventh graders of SMPN 3 Poso. This research is qualitative in nature, where the data are collected through observation. The findings show that the teaching and learning process was conducted in two meetings and test was administered after the meetings, and all students show satisfied achievement when comic strip is used in teaching and learning activities (27% are excellent, 63,6% students are good, and 9,0% students are good).Keywords: vocabulary acquisition, comic strips
