Abstract

In this study, we focused on the presentation of clay minerals, their conditions of formation and their different categories. We also reported the importance of purification in removing impurities and the responses induced by heat treatment of these minerals. Techniques used to detect clay minerals are also exposed. On the other hand, the mineralogical, physicochemical and thermal properties have a direct impact on the field of use of these minerals. These properties differ from one mineral to another, depending on the structure and chemical composition. Moreover, the remarkable properties of smectites make these minerals the most preferred for the industry and also in the environmental field. Due to their brilliant firing properties, illites are suitable for the construction industry. Moreover, the purification by acids (acetic acid and HCl) allows the removal of most associated minerals, and thus a secure access to the clays' characteristics and a very strong sensitization even to the small variation. Finally, the ethylene glycol (EG) swelling test only affects the basal distance of smectites, increasing this distance to 17 Å, but heating to 500°C destroys kaolinite, and closes the basal distance of smectites and vermiculites to 10 Å. Illites and chlorites show no response to these two treatments (EG, heating to 500°C).

Abstract

Flood is the most damaging natural disaster that happens everywhere in the world. The government would spend billions of ringgits to tackle it by creating public info flood website. The website could only be accessed by the user with an internet connection. To tackle this the researcher, develop a Flood Detection and Prevention System to sends a flood SMS alert directly to the user without the use of an internet connection. FDAP hardware consists of one microcontroller to process input and output, three sensors to detect rain, water level, and temperatures, and One GSM module to send SMS to the user directly to their phone. Development of the system will use Rapid Prototyping that focused on creating multiple prototypes until a finished product is developed. The product then will be analyzed for its usage on flood detection and prevention of flooding. A fully functional system will be developed including an SMS feature and a Web Server. Test involved functionality and acceptance test which uses a simulation environment that is created using a physical model and replica of flood phenomenon. FDAP system developed will be useful to rural villages to detect flood earlier and prevent it from harming live or properties. The finding of this study is expected to gain informative data for future flood analysis and study.

Abstract

Many people have a poor level of emergency preparedness, especially in their home environment. A previous study has stated that only a small percentage of people were well prepared in case of an emergency happening in their home while others are either do not know what to do or do not even think about it. This ignorance can lead to a harmful accident. For example, if an emergency such as a kitchen fire happens and is poorly handled by the people in the house it can lead to bigger accidents such as fire outbreaks. Thus, this study aims to identify the requirement, design, and develop a mobile application that can help users learn about household emergencies and increase their preparedness level for emergencies. Compared to other mobile applications for an emergency, Safe House App provides multimedia elements such as videos, and quiz activity which can attract users to use the application more to learn about the household emergency. The methodology implemented for this study is the Agile Model. Functionality Evaluation is conducted on 10 respondents aged 18 and above and most of the respondents are satisfied with the overall performance of Safe House App and agree that Safe House App can help the user increase their emergency preparedness level and attract them to learn about the household emergency.
