Abstract

This paper investigates the significance of the employee’s perspective in the context of corporate social responsibility, concerning its implications on employees’ motivation. We contend that our literature lacks an internal perspective beyond CSR’s universally recognized implications on external factors. This study aimed to explore the phenomenon and its internal implications on employees to add new knowledge in this domain and explore a developing country perspective, i.e., Pakistan. Besides, we hope to find a link/association between CSR and human resource management by exploring. So, the research may help HR managers in strategic formulation relating to workforce management, specifically CSR as a tool for employees’ motivation. Based on the McClelland’s framework of motivation – the need for affiliation, achievement, and power as an initial framework – we recognized the influence of CSR within the perspective of achievement and affiliation with no insinuation of power, grounded in our context. Moreover, in our empirical examination based on indepth interviews from Interior Sindh, spiritual obligations and self-actualization as in the purpose of life were two of the most confounding results inferred from our study. Besides, several subthemes emerged in our analysis, highlighting the underpinning process behind our main themes, i.e., how the sense of achievement in our study triggers the sense of loyalty, pride, and happiness among employees. The findings confirm that the main driving force behind organizational CSR is usually based on external factors (e.g., PR effect, government regulation, brand image, tax benefits) with rare emphasis on internal factors (e.g., effect on employees).

Abstract

This study explored on the nexus between trade (TRD), intellectual property right (IPR) and level of economic development (LDEV) over the period 1991 - 2018 using an Autoregressive distributed lag ARDL approach. The results suggest a long-run relationship between international trade, intellectual property right and level of economic development. The results also revealed that while the export component of the IPR exerted no impact on LDEV, TRD on the other hand, showed a temporary positive effect on the level of economic development possibly due to the instability in the macroeconomic environment and her overdependent on imported goods. Interestingly, FDI exerted a positive and significant effect on the level of economic development in the country. These results corroborate the outcome of the causality test, which revealed a uni-directional causality that runs from FDI, TRD to the level of economic development. In contrast, there seems to be a causal effect from the level of economic development to import component of the IPR to total productivity factor to inflation, respectively. The study concludes that both trade and intellectual property right are not capable of influencing economic development within the study period due to weak IPR protection and mono-product nature of the country. Based on the above, the study recommends that the government should provide an enabling environment that will further attract foreign investment in the country. Also, formulate a well developed institutional framework that will promote intellectual property right and finally diversify the economy into other sectors that are promising in order to avoid external shocks that can emanate from relying on a single sector of an economy.

Abstract

Women entrepreneurs play a key role in national economies around the world, generate employment and value-added, and contributing to innovation. However, they have been marginalized, culturally excluded from having access to finance, networking, and social progress. This study, therefore, looks at the influence of capacity building on women-owned SMEs’ execution. Particularly, the study determines the influence of financial inclusion strategy, social inclusion strategy, entrepreneurial orientation strategy, and networking skills strategy on women-owned SMEs’ performance. The study adopts a quantitative methodology, and a structured questionnaire that contains an overwhelmingly closed-ended questionnaire was utilized to gather information for analysis purposes. Judgmental sampling procedures were utilized for information assortment, which is known as a nonprobability sampling procedure. Two hundred and twenty (220) questionnaires were recuperated out of three hundred (300) questionnaires dispersed, giving a recovery rate of 73.3%. Analysis of data was done via frequencies, percentages, correlation analysis, and ordinary least square. The results of the investigation reveal that capacity building components are major predictors of women-owned SMEs’ performance. The study also confirms that the capacity building of women entrepreneurs in SMEs through an array of skills in financing, culture re-orientation, risk-taking, and networking are strong predictors of women-owned SMEs’ performance. This development indicates that if women who represent virtually half of the Federal Republic of Nigeria population exploit their full potentials and remodel Nigeria from a developing country into an industrial nation by 2030, they must give the most extreme inclination to capacity building.

Abstract

In Wuhan, China, and by the end of 2019 until the first half of 2020, the world experienced the proliferation and destruction of the new coronavirus discovery. Many infections and deaths caused by the virus, the collapse of the health care system, and the economic impact have few modern analogs. Many countries present a reaction to the pandemic; however, it arises when a heated debate ensues over which political system’s democracy versus authoritarianism is best suited to reply to the pandemic. As global efforts to contain the virus continue, this article aims to examine how the COVID-19 crisis has had many effects on the cultural lifestyle and social entrepreneurship of every country in the world. This current lack of integration between crisis management, entrepreneurship, and COVID-19 literature are the main points to be discussed. The summary of this analysis is consistently clear in the current literature through the connection of key notions within emergency management and entrepreneurship. Due to COVID-19, a dramatic effect has reached the global society. In fact, and academically speaking, this survey is among the first to study these consequences at different levels, including the cultural, social, and lifestyle entrepreneurship context. As a result, micro, macro, and meso environmental impacts deriving from the COVID-19 crisis can be better understood in the entrepreneurship literature area. At present, the impact of COVID-19 on entrepreneurship has not been studied. That is why this article tries to provide a broader and more comprehensive framework.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial orientation has not been much studied in conjunction with leadership to assess the organizational dynamics. This study aims to identify the interaction between complexity leadership functions and investigating their relationship with entrepreneurial orientation—this research study used survey questionnaire methods to collect cross-sectional quantitative data. To test research hypotheses, a sample of 288 respondents was collected from the telecommunication sector of Pakistan. Analysis extracted 15 fine-grain interactions for all the five complexity leadership functions. Findings indicate a significant relationship between generative leadership, information gathering leadership, information using leadership and entrepreneurial orientation, the partial relationship between administrative leadership and entrepreneurial orientation. However, an insignificant relationship was found between community-building leadership and entrepreneurial orientation because the Telecommunication sector might not focus much on community building compared to other practices of complexity leadership functions. Thus, this study makes a significant contribution to the body of knowledge in the domain of leadership and entrepreneurial leadership. For practitioners, the study highlights fine-grain interactions of complexity leadership functions to further augment entrepreneurial orientation.

Abstract

The paper analysed the relationship amid board characteristics and environmental information disclosure of listed Nigerian manufacturing firms. The data used were sourced from twenty (20) Nigerian listed companies from the manufacturing sectors, which were randomly chosen from manufacturing firms listed on the Nigerian stock market between 2013 and 2017. The study made use of ordinary least squares regression. According to the research findings, there exists a positive and significant relationship linking board independence and environmental disclosure in Nigeria’s oil and gas and manufacturing sectors. In line with the results, a large board of directors comprised of foreign directors would improve firms’ environmental disclosure. Furthermore, this study’s findings would help organisations satisfy stakeholders’ needs in their corporate governance practices. This study throws light on voluntary disclosures and how firms can adjust their corporate governance practices to boost their environmental disclosures, which is a contemporary issue because stakeholders demand more information that affects their investing decisions.

Abstract

The study investigated operational efficiency through operational resilience of private universities in Southwest Nigeria during COVID-19. Private universities were established to impact knowledge, enabled unhindered learning and timely turn-out of graduates since their inception in 1999. However, private universities’ operational efficiency was challenged and truncated by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which motivated the thrust to determine their operational resilience along with their efficiency. Primary data were obtained from academic lecturers in eight selected private universities in Southwest Nigeria. The questionnaire used was adapted, and the validity and reliability were established. Findings showed that operational resilience significantly affected the operational efficiency of the universities. Therefore, institutions should leverage technology to enhance response and fast-track learning to drive their operational efficiency in the face of disruptions and pandemic.
