Abstract

This study examined the effect of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic from early December 2020 to March end, 2021 on the performance of the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE). We examined the effect from two perspectives: stock price and trade volume. On one side, the study investigated how the pandemic affected the aggregate stock price and volume of stocks traded on the other. The study used Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique to analyze the data of second-wave Covid-19 confirmed cases, number of related deaths versus All Share Index, and volume of stocks traded on both short and long-runs. Results showed that with respect to stock prices, in the short run, Covid-19 second wave confirmed cases and number of deaths have a positive but insignificant effect on stock prices. In the long run, the effect of confirmed cases on stock price was negative and insignificant, that of the number of deaths was positive but significant. With respect to the volume of trade on the NSE, in the short run, while the number of confirmed cases has a positive and significant effect on the volume of trade, the number of recorded deaths has a positive but insignificant effect. In the long run, however, the effect of both confirmed cases and the number of deaths is positive but statistically insignificant. We conclude that the Covid-19 second wave only significantly affects the volume of trade on the NSE and that the effect is positive but that the pandemic did not significantly affect stock prices.

Abstract

This study aimed to establish the key determinants of the profitability of ceramic companies. For this purpose the data of all ceramic companies were selected from DSE. The research period covered from 2015-16 to 2020-21. Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) were used as the indicators of profitability, while Management efficiency, Capital intensity, Firm size, Sales growth, Liquidity, Working capital, Leverage, Annual inflation and GDP annual growth were used as the independent variables. Pearson's correlation and ordinary least squares regression models were used to establish the relationship between profitability and its different determinants. The regression analysis results showed that liquidity and firm size have a statistically significant positive impact on profitability along with sales growth, capital intensity, management efficiency. On the other hand, working capital had a negative impact on profitability; others had no significant impact on profitability. Therefore, this research concludes that we should give more emphasize on liquidity and firm size for increasing ceramic companies' profitability.

Abstract

The northern Mexican city of Monterrey is well-known for its high economic development, strong industrial network, and for being the based city of a great number of multinationals from Mexico. However, its business culture has been historically developed in an environment with a lack of inside competition, repercuting their internationalization behavior. In this paper, we develop a binary decision model of Foreign Direct Investment based on the behavioral preferences that characterize multinationals of Monterrey. To test its efficiency, we use the internationalization process of the convenience store chain OXXO, finding that there is a preference for greenfield type of investment in markets with lower levels of competition, and brownfield type of investment for markets where is costly the control over the competition. These factors satisfactorily explain the Foreign Direct Investment process of OXXO in Chile and Peru, except for Brazil, in which we suggest the decission was not optimal. Finally, we discuss that our model could be explanatory for other multinationals from Monterrey and cities with similar business culture history.

Abstract

Small and medium enterprises had difficulty coping with the Covid-19 pandemic as very few SMEs have made it through it, particularly in Nigeria. Strategic leadership has been acknowledged as a crucial asset and one of the driving forces of success among SMEs. This study examined the impact of strategic leadership on the performance of SMEs in Lagos, Nigeria, adopting a mixed-method approach. A total of 400 complete responses from SME managers were analyzed. While simple regression was applied for the analysis of the returned copies of the questionnaire, the qualitative interview results were obtained through thematic analysis. The results indicate that innovation capabilities significantly impact organizational performance. Hence, the study recommends that focusing on innovative capability of strategic leadership such as new product development, innovation activities, marketing intelligence, value creation and new ideas with radical changes are germane for enhancing performance.
