Indonesian Journal of Theology is a theological journal published by Asosiasi Teolog Indonesia. It is established to enhance theological discourse among theologians across denominations and faith traditions, particularly in the Indonesian context. We also aim to contribute to the wider academic theological discourse in global Christianity, especially in the Asian context, by publishing the works of authors from all over the world. We welcome contributions from scholars of theological studies, religious studies, and other related fields. Indonesian Journal of Theology receives a wide range of manuscripts of interdisciplinary nature related to theology and religious studies as it aims to bridge academia, ecclesia, and society. It publishes articles and book reviews as resources for theological education, pedagogy, and ecumenical and interreligious learning on topics related to Theology, Biblical studies, and Religious studies. IJT commits to publish high quality academic articles. Managed and edited by a diverse team of scholars from different institutions, all articles are processed through a double blind peer review by respected scholars in their field.

Abstract

Money is, in of itself, an anonymous and neutral force. However, throughgoing capitalization in all dimensions of life has brought humankind to regard the making of money as its sole objective to be achieved by any means necessary. At the same time, the misuse of money breeds alienation. The expression, “Whosoever has the money, has the power,” only exacerbates alienation. As a social reality, alienation presents a confessional challenge to the church, including churches in Indonesia. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, with particular emphasis upon philosophical and theological studies, I argue that the church bears ethical-moral responsibility for overcoming this challenge. The solution that I offer amounts to a “new language” for money within the framework of a “theology of money”: To meet its ministry obligations, the church needs money, yet the church must also combat the idolization of it. To wit, churches must dare to prove that each, whether as individual or institution, is truly free from all forms of monetary idolatry.

Abstract

Unjust judgment ever haunts human life. One instance of such injustice is recorded in Psalm 58. Injustice begets deep human suffering. This article puts forth a reading of Psalm 58 using poetic criticism in an attempt to disclose the psalmist’s feelings amid his suffering. Taking on this aspect of the psalmist’s feelings differs subtly from other scholarly approaches to reading Psalm 58, such as the contribution of Marvin E. Tate. Instead, here the psalmist’s feelings are disclosed in the very fact of the suffering he experiences, although suffering is not the inception of the psalmist’s feelings. The suffering he experiences creates nothing of his feelings. Rather, divine intervention amid suffering is what stirs the very feelings being wrought within the psalmist. That intervention is registered in the psalmist’s recognition toward God. In the end, the event of God’s just judgment might inspire the church’s own disposition against unjust judgment.

Abstract

Knowledge, capacity, and creativity are God’s gifts to women, and these gifts enable women to weave cloth. From a perspective of theological aesthetics, the activity of such weaving women may be seen as a form of participation in God’s beauty, just as their experience as women weavers become an experience of the beauty of God. These women express understanding, knowledge, and awareness of their own personhood, namely, as human beings who through the process and experience of weaving cannot be separated from one another, nature, or God. This article locates the experience of women weavers as an important site for theological aesthetics. Such experience invites more than mere recognition or appreciation, even as it might also function as a basis for a contextual theology in Sumba. This is so, because—as I explicate—such experience amounts to an experience of the beauty of God.

Abstract

Echoes of liturgical renewal have come to pervade a number of churches these past decades. Alternatively, one finds that the discourse concerning mission is being abandoned by the church and domain of theology, alike. Yet a closer look at the principles undergirding the liturgical renewal movement shows a certain connection between liturgy and mission. Notion of a missional liturgy further emphasizes the link between the two. Constructive efforts leading to these findings thus generate enthusiasm for the renewal of liturgy as transformative space. This enthusiastic spirit ought to encourage the church to designate liturgy as space within which the church is to perform its mission.

Abstract

Construction for Solomon's Temple entailed forced labor. This is evinced, first, by several terms connoting forced labor, such as mas, sēbel, and ‘ebed, which are used in the text to describe the Temple project. Widely attested during the reigns of David and Solomon, terms such as these denote just how royal projects were carried out. A second piece of evidence concerns the outbreak of civil unrest during Solomon's day over the issue of forced labor in Israel. As such, the Temple's very construction bears enormous human cost, just as the splendor of that Temple is directly proportionate to the suffering of both denizens and working class. Here the author analyzes the Temple-construction process of Solomon's era, showcasing one example of the “human pyramid” that demands consideration amid a proliferation of interpretative work to be done in the present time.

Abstract

Silence was a provocative film, particularly for Christians viewers. Aside from sketching stories of great interest concerning challenges endured by Jesuit missionaries to Japan, the film presents a deep ethical struggle one finds worthy of careful analysis. In the most climactic scene, the missionary Rodrigues faces an ethical dilemma. He must desecrate fumi-e, a bronze board depicting Christ Jesus, in an act of apostasy to save five tortured and dying hostages. Rodrigues must choose: apostasy or allowing people to die. In this article, the author attempts to reason through Rodrigues' ethical dilemma, without providing conclusive arguments in support of any ethical choices the author might prefer, to broaden the thinking of his readers. Following preliminary considerations for how to define the category of ethical dilemma, the author provides two key questions for evaluating solutions belonging to the moral agent. (α) Concerning competing moral demands, which one is highest in standing amid the rest? (β) Concerning available interventions by the moral agent, which action most effectively realizes the highest moral demand? These two lines of inquiry frame three proposed solutions. Finally, the author also proposes a fourth solution termed Kierkegaardian conflict, following the philosopher of ethics Phillip L. Quinn, whose own proposal, too, remains inconclusive for resolving the dilemma.
