Abstract

This paper examines the close connection between the domain of biblical interpretation and the communal sphere, which is comprised of living data that serves as starting point for scriptural interpretation. The yield of such interpretations serves as an important contribution for a church seeking proactively to address and resolve various urgent concerns in the current context. This essay considers one such crisis needing to be addressed: the issue of human trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara, with specific regard to how female victims of human trafficking have been torn apart by the variegated forms of oppression they have undergone. By looking to Genesis 1:26-27, with its emphasis on the concept of imago Dei, this paper demonstrates just how useful is a postcolonial approach to reading scripture, namely in the case of female victims who are reconsidering the manner in which they regard and understand themselves; no less than are men, women too are created in the image of God and, therefore, have in the sight of God an equality and parity of status with men. Equality and parity become a strong foundation upon which to resist every effort to debase the dignity and value of women. Furthermore, this article highlights the role of the community, namely as an agential collective set to oppose any attempt to rob fellow human beings of their claim, namely as living persons created according to God’s image.

Abstract

What is “spirituality”? The term finds wide usage in the literature today, yet its meaning remains nebulous. One crucial problem lies in how precepts and propositions are maintained as truth, oftentimes becoming obstacles for the flourishing of authentic spirituality. In our reading of Colossians 2:16–3:4, we see the challenges Colossian Christians faced as stemming not from what has been termed the “Colossian heresy,” but rather from what we are calling the “Colossian orthodoxy.” Those who were enthusiastically eager in spiritual matters built stumbling blocks for the spiritual growth of others. In contrast, the epistolary author underscores for the Colossian church just how important is their union with Christ, which must be manifest in their everyday lives. We contend that authentic spirituality relies upon the love of God for the people of God, not on religious precepts.

Abstract

The essay questions whether Ephesians 5:21-33 supports a hierarchical relation between husbands and wives as an ideal and universal principle. To answer the question, as a Muslim, I share my reading of this passage in dialogue with a similar Qur’anic passage, Q. 4:34. I learn that the two texts have undergone similar history since its emergence until today. Through a contextual reading, I view that even though Ephesians 5:21-33, as well as Q. 4:34, adopted the household concept accepted in the area, which was patriarchal, the author instilled a new higher equal relationship between husbands and wives. In short, this text proposes “an intended transformation” or an “imaginative vision.” Offering a new reading of gender-related texts is a shared struggle in both traditions. It is an important endeavor to make the scriptures speak for today’s world as a powerful basis for social transformation.

Abstract

This article elucidates the concept of creation, which is examined through the narrative of the creation of the Moluccas and the first Moluccans. As with Hebrew, Babylonian or Greek mythological tradition, the Moluccans also maintain a historical narration of the creation myth. This myth within the Moluccan tradition begs to be interpreted. The Moluccas (Nusaina) are considered by Moluccans to be a home shared as fellow brothers (and sisters), emerging from one womb of Ina (mother) who inhabits the realm of Nusaina. This creation narrative focuses on the role of Ina or mother as the central figure. Ina is she who is pregnant, breastfeeding, nurturing and raising. Beyond myth, this narrative also contains theological value, which needs to be constructed to offer theological meaning for the people of the Moluccas.

Abstract

Throughout the long historical development of biblical hermeneutics—in phases from the implicit-practical to the theoretical reflective—consideration for the meaning of a text is determined by what is 'behind', 'inside', or 'in front of' it. Among the hermeneutical perspectives available in today's postmodern era, biblical interpretive methods can be categorized according to whether they refer to (1) the author and his world, (2) the text and its world, (3) the reader and his/her/their world, or (4) the thing and its world. Over the past few decades, approaches oriented toward the reader have gained in influence. Of profound interest is the book of Job and its reading by those who live with HIV/AIDS. The book of Job, in its presentation of the suffering person as the central figure, raises a paradox that brings readers to laughter. The book of Job is, therefore, a consoling read.

Abstract

Although efforts to construct Old Testament theology in Indonesia started in the 1970s, as attested in the number of theses and dissertations written by Indonesian scholars, the shape of contextual biblical theology itself remains dominated by a one-way model. The Bible is taken to be source, inspiration, evaluator, or teacher, while readers merely listen, imitate, and adhere to it. Yet readers today, who come from dynamically variegated contexts, are inevitably required to bridge-build between biblical texts and their own respective contexts. In view of this, dialogue in its broadest sense becomes the key to constructing a biblical theology overall, including OT theology. This paper challenges biblical theologians to find available approaches and, deploying them properly, to construct contextual Old Testament theology in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article is a preliminary attempt to understand the theology of Karl Barth in its relation to the ideas of Karl Marx. Barth mentions the name of Marx many times throughout his own writings and gives some theological responses to Marx’ thoughts, in modes both appreciative and critical. Barth even once claimed that theology properly worked out would result in a promise for liberation preferable to that of Marx. In this initial phase of research, the present article surveys the mentions of Marx throughout Barth’s works. The author considers each mention in context, before sketching in general and then identifying in specific certain themes resulting from this preliminary investigation, to be explored in further research.

Abstract

This article proposes a Trinitarian imagination that demonstrates the embrace of the whole universe by the Son and the Holy Spirit, the two hands of God, through the creation and perfection of the universe. Both divine acts take place in the incarnation of the Son and the inhabitation of the Holy Spirit. The Trinitarian perichoretic principle also applies to the relationship between God and creation in such a way that, not only is the whole universe in the Son (panentheism), but so too the Holy Spirit permeates the whole universe (theenpanism). As a result, Christian theology offers a comforting pastoral message, namely, that the universe is never entirely separable from the loving communion of the Triune God.

Abstract

As a Catholic theologian at the vanguard of liberation theology, Leonardo Boff wrote much about the poor and of the destruction of nature. Boff constructed his theology on the basis of Vatican II’s (1962-1965) spirit of aggiornamento. Eventually, and with much controversy, Boff opted to leave the Franciscan order, having oft-criticized the doctrines and social teachings of the Catholic Church deemed “lukewarm” toward structural poverty and Latin American socio-economic life that had been impacted by the actions of junta militarism; as well, he criticized both the hierarchical spirit of the Roman Catholic Church and the doctrine of papal infallibility. Since the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis), who has dedicated his life and theology to address the destruction of nature and the cries of the poor, the spirit of Boff's theology seems again to be on the rise. My conviction is that the theological content of Laudato si’ displays something of a Boffian character, the import of which propels the present study. By way of comparative method, I show that there are similarities in the theologies of both theologians. This essay begins with an exploration of Boff's theology, continuing with an exploration of the text of the encyclical Laudato si’, followed by the bringing together of these texts comparatively. By the end of this paper, a critique concerning the concept of sustainable development will be put forth.
