Indonesian Journal of Theology is a theological journal published by Asosiasi Teolog Indonesia. It is established to enhance theological discourse among theologians across denominations and faith traditions, particularly in the Indonesian context. We also aim to contribute to the wider academic theological discourse in global Christianity, especially in the Asian context, by publishing the works of authors from all over the world. We welcome contributions from scholars of theological studies, religious studies, and other related fields. Indonesian Journal of Theology receives a wide range of manuscripts of interdisciplinary nature related to theology and religious studies as it aims to bridge academia, ecclesia, and society. It publishes articles and book reviews as resources for theological education, pedagogy, and ecumenical and interreligious learning on topics related to Theology, Biblical studies, and Religious studies. IJT commits to publish high quality academic articles. Managed and edited by a diverse team of scholars from different institutions, all articles are processed through a double blind peer review by respected scholars in their field.

Abstract

This article registers a preliminary effort to (re)construct Christology in the Gospel of John from a migrant perspective. Jesus is "the Stranger" who immigrates to the earth from heaven. He is not only a migrant, John also describes him as an unwanted and rejected foreigner. Special attention is given to the paradoxical relationship between Jesus and the world. The seemingly paradoxical tension the Gospel of John describes is better explained, this article will argue, when Jesus is conceived as an immigrant.

Abstract

The fact that religious plurality has become a growing reality, especially in Indonesia, demands that every religion and their respective adherents reconsider basic doctrinal premises that stand in dismissive exclusivity toward other religions. The doctrine of Christology appears as one of Christianity’s frequently claimed bases, in support of the notion of Christianity’s superiority to other religions. One such Christology is that of “Logos Christology,” as developed in the prologue of John’s Gospel (John 1:1-18). In order to understand Christology in a more inclusive way, a deeper contextual consideration of the Johannine prologue also invites its reinterpretation from different perspectives. In this essay, I attempt to demonstrate the suitability of process theology for the task of a more inclusive conception of Logos Christology—one in which aspects of the process and of relation, rather than of substance, become most fundamental for comprehension of reality.

Abstract

In this article, I argue that issues, particularly with regard to concerns of "life after death" and the role of Minahasan forebears within the life of the community, have over time been shaped, reconstructed, and re-represented by a Western Christian moralism. A counterproposal is offered, in the form of a "theology of identity." Embracing an understanding of identity as being a summative projection of a "newborn spirit," this emerging approach to theologizing Minahasan identity offers a novel means to attend to certain turmoils that have festered within the life of the Minahasan church and its Christians.

Abstract

This article challenges conceptions of intellectual disability that view such conditions from the perspective of normalcy. In Indonesia, conversations of theological anthropology still employ a medical model lens, which perceives disability merely as bodily and intellectual impairments, thus failing the standard of "normal." Normalcy unilaterally defines disability and dictates normative approaches toward persons with disabilities. Consequently, persons with disabilities are perceived in Indonesia as mere objects of charity to be pitied. On the other hand, they remain susceptible to suffering violence. These trends owing to the fact that Indonesian society does not adequately provide either tangible resource considerations or sufficient social support. Lacunae in the theological literature concerning disability in Indonesian contexts foment in the life of the church further challenges for persons with disabilities. For persons there with intellectual disabilities, in particular, the situation is even more severe, as their condition is regarded as a kind of punishment for sin and further stigmatized as abnormal. This article offers a constructive theology of disability to dismantle the myth of normalcy, which reduces persons with disabilities to being merely impaired organisms within society. Theological musings on the beauty of all creation, the perichoretic relationship within the Trinity, the doctrines of imago Dei and imago Christi are taken up in this essay, to offer an inclusive theology expressly for persons with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract

In this essay, I present an understanding of Jesus from the perspective of Balinese Christians in Central Sulawesi. As an example of a reader-response method, Revelation 19:11-21 has been historically read there in light of a Balinese worldview. Such readings meet with the Balinese interpretation of the white-horse rider (Jesus) as the awatara (avatar) that will come again to fight evil (adharma) and to establish righteousness (dharma) on earth. Insights to be culled from such work include increased awareness of our ecological plight, as well as heightened urgency to address both the moral decline of society and the contemporary phenomenon of indifference toward religion.

Abstract

Mission, a basic facet of Christianity, has been deployed in many different ways. One strategy has been by means of violence, rooted as this approach has been in a cognitive-propositional mode of thinking. In this article, I show the importance of maintaining a historical understanding of mission, in order to challenge certain realizations of Christian mission-driven by such a cognitive-propositional paradigm. This article appropriates aspects of George A. Lindbeck’s thought, in order to explain the characteristics of the cognitive-propositional paradigm and its implications for Christian mission.
