Abstract

Is Romans 10 simply an excursus on the need for evangelism and mission in the midst of Paul’s “doctrine of predestination”? In this article, a chiasm is identified and utilized as a framework to further analyze Romans 10. It is demonstrated that the chiasm lends itself to accentuate the epistemological irony of Israel’s response to the gospel. Despite the glory of the gospel that was proclaimed in the Hebrew Bible, the majority of the Jews in Paul’s time remained in ignorance as they missed the hermeneutical key to understanding the Mosaic Law, namely, “Christ is the goal of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Rather than an excursus within Paul’s doctrinal discourse, Romans 10 is the climax of the irony of Israel as the most privileged people who failed in their hearing and understanding.

Abstract

This article is an attempt to learn from the struggle for identity in early Christianity. Since its birth from the womb of Judaism, Christianity was challenged to redefine its identity, rooted as it was in Judaism vis-à-vis the influence of Hellenization. Such a journey into unknown territory (terra incognita) unavoidably led to the birth of new identity which, on the one hand, remained an integral part of its original matrix, but at once challenged its exclusive character. In this overview, two main examples of reinterpretation are presented to illustrate the case, first, by Paul who radically reinterprets Torah and the identity of God's people in Christ, and second, by the author of 1 Peter who reinterprets the identity of "Christianos" as "aliens" and "exiles" in their Graeco-Roman milieu. As can be learned from these examples, negotiation, and renegotiation are an inevitable necessity when Christianity penetrates new territories in its encounter with the "other", in order to root itself in new terra incognita.

Abstract

The liturgy of the Eucharist is a communal rite that becomes a very important foundation of the theological construction of the church. The church must have a good foundation of the Eucharist as a place where they can encounter God as a community. As a result, the theology that comes from this encounter will encourage the church to act out in her theology in the world. In 2014, Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (Protestant Batak Christian Church/HKBP) is trying to reformulate their church order. This research encourages HKBP to look at their theology of the Eucharist more seriously. By using a critical analysis towards the HKBP liturgy of the Eucharist, this paper shows the inconsistency between the HKBP church documents view on the Eucharist. The inconsistency is caused by the different times of the writing of the documents, which were never synchronized.

Abstract

This paper describes the concept of sacred sound in Hinduism as a way for the Hindu to approach and to know the Christian God. Different from Christians who are known as the people of the book, Hindu people are known as the people of the sound. The vocalic syllable Om or Aum and the repeating/chanting of the sacred sound in Hindu worship give a unique room to a new and different way of knowing God. God is no longer perceivable as the powerful figure in the book but as consciousness. The word “consciousness” in this paper refers to the ability of believers to be mindful and responsive to God. This paper will also describe the concept of sonic theology as a different way to perceive God in Hinduism and relate it to the practice of Yoga that is widely practiced in the modern world today.

Abstract

Relationality between Jesus the Son and God the Father becomes a perfect model of God and humanity. But, how do we understand the meaning of this relationality? Why in Hinduism, especially, in Advaitic tradition, this relationality issue becomes an essential element to realize the one God? Can we do a pilgrimage of our faith by comparing Christian and Hindu traditions? This study will examine on mystical approach of Sri Ramakrishna’s experience as a Hindu and the discernment of Jacques Dupuis’ on awareness as a Catholic. The notion of relationality would be exposed within those two different traditions, each with different perspectives. One will question Advaita and the other will delve into awareness. In the end, advaitic perspectives will help us to comprehend the relationality of God and humanity through our readings of understanding Dupuis’ awareness.

Abstract

“God ” is, in the first place, a name. Before being a person or Being, the name “God” could be anything imaginable. “What’s in a name?” “Who is the one that we love and how could we finally give account to it?” Such are the questions this paper will try to answer. This study will conduct a reading based largely on Augustine’s Confessions X, and will be dissected into two smaller parts. In the first part, I will propose the possibility of applying a mystical approach to address this issue. Then I will examine how the saint travels across his memory in search of God, as a demonstration of the mystical journey into love.
A Pentecostal Lex Legendi For Fostering Polyphonic Perspectivalism in Pentecostal Tradition

Abstract

I begin this paper by surveying qualitative distinctives of Pentecostal Bible reading, which together contribute to the missional localizing giftedness of Pentecostalism worldwide. In Part 2 I then suggest that detrimentally incongruent to these distinctives are several Fundamentalist-Evangelical mediated postures to Scripture. In Part 3 I address this incongruence by proposing a Pentecostal lex legendi (“rule of reading”), built on Telford Work’s “Trinitarian-Ontology of Scripture.” I argue that Work’s bibliology provides a compelling theological premise for both the Pentecostal dynamic and polyvalent understanding of biblical revelation, and substantiates theological pluralism as intrinsic to Pentecostal tradition. Further building on Work’s bibliology, I then propose a Pentecostal form of lectio divina (“sacred reading”) that structures the classical/medieval fourfold Scripture sense, to a constructivist understanding of the threefold Pentecostal soteriological experiences (redemption, sanctification, and Spirit baptism). I conclude by delineating how this Pentecostal form of lectio divina may help Pentecostals identify and utilize theological hermeneutics that best foster the Pentecostal missiological giftedness, and hence the pluralizing of Pentecostalism(s) worldwide.

Abstract

Reformation was introduced to Indonesia in 1998 but it has not been able to alleviate poverty. Many think that it is the government that holds the greatest responsibility for poverty. In fact, the government is not the only stakeholder in development. The private sector and civil society organizations also play an important role in it. The Protestant Church in West Indonesia (GPIB) as part of civil society organizations seems to play a very strategic role in development, including poverty alleviation. Some studies show that the quality of leadership is one of the factors that determine GPIB’s role in reducing poverty. This is closely related to the creation of people’s character that enables the religious civil society organization to make maximum contributions to reducing poverty. Therefore, the 12S-7C5P-3S-GT Navigation Model may provide the leaders and people of GPIB with guidelines to build their character so that they will be ready and able to play a concrete role in alleviating poverty.
