Indonesian Journal of Theology is a theological journal published by Asosiasi Teolog Indonesia. It is established to enhance theological discourse among theologians across denominations and faith traditions, particularly in the Indonesian context. We also aim to contribute to the wider academic theological discourse in global Christianity, especially in the Asian context, by publishing the works of authors from all over the world. We welcome contributions from scholars of theological studies, religious studies, and other related fields. Indonesian Journal of Theology receives a wide range of manuscripts of interdisciplinary nature related to theology and religious studies as it aims to bridge academia, ecclesia, and society. It publishes articles and book reviews as resources for theological education, pedagogy, and ecumenical and interreligious learning on topics related to Theology, Biblical studies, and Religious studies. IJT commits to publish high quality academic articles. Managed and edited by a diverse team of scholars from different institutions, all articles are processed through a double blind peer review by respected scholars in their field.

Abstract

Immigrant churches function as interpretive interstices, where assimilation strategies are adjudicated and clashing cultural norms negotiated. Addressing purported Asian American malaise vis-à-vis civic engagement, I propose a practical theology method that privileges interlocution between a scriptural hermeneutics of diaspora and certain insights from social science. In the case of Asian American Christianity, how might immigrant churches more faithfully seek the "city's" shalom? What resources are available to evangelical migrants—and their children—for helping define identity and sense of belonging in this (new) land? How might immigrant churches better serve their ethnic constituencies within the context of American civic society? Thoughtful appropriation of the mantle of exile on the part of immigrant Christians helps to theologize that space of perpetual foreignness within contemporary American society. Immigrant churches are called to foster exilic interpretive imaginaries, in order to discern divine agency and faithful human response within the very contexts where God has dispersed God's people. One such example of doing practical theology is here offered.

Abstract

What is the relevance of the sixth-century writings attributed to Dionysius of Areopagite or Pseudo-Dionysius for twenty-first-century Christianity? This article is an inquiry into the notion of divine unknowability within the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus. As a thinker who lived in an era in which great disputations over cardinal doctrines of the church had become passé, Pseudo-Dionysius seemed to have creatively used different concepts and phrases than those great thinkers before him. For Dionysius, the way to know God is to unknow (agnōsia) God, for God cannot be the object of human knowledge—God is beyond being. To posit God as being or to be existent means, therefore, idolatry, since God is that which cannot be grasped by words or human concepts. To assess this apophatic theology of Pseudo-Dionysius, I shall make use of the thinking of Raimon Panikkar who struggles against Western “strict monotheism.” Finally, I shall demonstrate the implications of the doctrine of the unknowability of God vis-à-vis modern debates on the existence of God and on atheism.

Abstract

This article offers one of the alternative solutions for the struggle of the Christian-Chinese-Indonesians in facing their status as strangers in Indonesia. This status is a result of the ongoing stereotyping process which position them as a homogenous group. While in reality, their understandings of their identity in Indonesia are varied. This heterogeneity can be seen through the various alternative solution they made to face the situation. This article gives the alternative solution according to the Christian faith by understanding Jesus Christ’s status as The Stranger. The Gospels show us that Jesus chose His status as The Stranger by purpose to give meaning to it and to use it positively. For Jesus, His status as The Stranger is not a terrible thing, but rather an opportunity to work for His society. His viewpoint to His status can be the viewpoint of Chinese-Indonesians to their status. By that, they can use their status to make their presence relevant in Indonesia.

Abstract

Incidents of rape are often broadcast on the news and other media. Although the frequency of reported rape need not equate to its being commonplace, there is a danger of desensitization. We're such conditioning to continue, women victims could be placed at greater risk for gender inequality. Pastors are in a special position, to execute the duties of priesthood and prophet (civic justice advocate), as part of an overall strategy of ministry to the community. But when a pastor does not play this role, perhaps due to the politics of influence and power vis-à-vis his or her position, in the analysis of the present author this should be regarded as spiritual abuse. Therefore, this paper considers the following proposal: such pastors must turn to reflect upon the nature of pastoral service and upon the attitude Jesus showed throughout his exemplary ministry. Only such reflection will combat the proclivity toward perpetuating the aforementioned spiritual abuse.

Abstract

Religions tend to imprison God in their formulation. It is even not impossible that religions can replace God. The very act of replacing God is known as the idolatry of religion. Let God be God and religions be God’s hands to bring liberation to the world.

Abstract

Two interesting questions in relation to the Early Church history are the extent of unity or diversity among Peter, James, and Paul; and also how Paul's thoughts have shaped the direction of the Church in later periods. Answers to these questions will be very helpful in order that we can give a proper response to "Paulinism", an accusation which some non-Christian thinkers often have towards Christians (c.f. Tom Jacobs). Such an accusation (Paulinism) basically says that Christianity is a religion created by St. Paul, not Jesus Christ. In order to respond to such an accusation, in this article the writer will describe: what was the historical truth concerning relation between St. Paul and the Jerusalem Church generally, and especially the relation between St. Paul and James the brother of Jesus. It will be shown that the relationship between St. Paul and the Jerusalem Church did not indicate separation or conflict, but unity in diversity. This article is written with a purpose to open a new constructive way of interfaith dialogue; nonetheless, this is just preliminary research, therefore, this article may not give the last word or a definitive answer to the problems posed above.
