Abstract

The increasing environmental concerns surrounding fast fashion and the accumulation of waste materials have prompted a need for alternative, sustainable materials in various industries. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of utilizing recycled carbon and polyester composites for ship hull construction. An experimental approach is employed, focusing on tensile testing of material specimens, including carbon fiber and polyester, in accordance with ASTM D3039 standards. The method involves creating composite specimens, subjecting them to tensile tests, and analyzing the results through standard deviation to compare tensile strength and maximum load. The results demonstrate that the composites exhibit suitable mechanical properties for ship hull construction, with polyester showing an insignificant difference compared to carbon fiber composites. These findings provide a reference for future applications in shipbuilding, contributing to environmental sustainability efforts by repurposing waste materials.

Abstract

Komodo National Park (KNP), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, faces significant environmental challenges due to increasing tourism, climate change, and resource management issues. This preliminary study employs the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to estimate visitors' willingness to pay (WTP) for adaptive management initiatives aimed at preserving the park's unique biodiversity and ecological health. Conducted in Labuan Bajo, the main gateway to KNP, the study involved 50 respondents who were surveyed on their WTP for improved environmental quality and management. The binary logistic regression analysis revealed that higher income levels and gender significantly influence WTP, with higher income individuals and males being more likely to contribute financially. Marital status showed a negative association with WTP, suggesting that married individuals may have financial constraints. The study highlights the importance of understanding sociodemographic factors to design effective funding strategies for conservation. The findings underscore the need for targeted communication and engagement strategies to increase financial support for adaptive management. These insights will inform policy and management strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of KNP.

Abstract

In sustainable development, Green Tourism integrates environmental preservation, community empowerment, and tourism attractions. This paper aims to develop a strategy for integrating Green Tourism into Tapanuli Tengah Regency's maritime tourism industry. This area continues to deal with a number of classic challenges, such as disorganized tourism administration, poor waste management, and a disregard for accommodations and accessibility. A comprehensive review of the regulations that were implemented in place is backed by a mixed methodology that uses the Soft System Methodology for Visitor Satisfaction Index (VSI) values and responses from different respondents. The research findings, with a satisfaction level of 80.4%, demonstrate that tourists are happy with the tourism activities. There are nonetheless, certain demands made by the guests. Planning for a more methodical and sustainable development necessitates careful consideration of current policies.The research findings outline a number of issues and their resolutions, such as the creation of first-rate amenities, instruction for operators of tourism-related businesses, the application of standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure price parity for goods and services, and a recommendation to launch a flight route from Jakarta to Tapanuli Tengah in order to facilitate outside tourists coming to the region.

Abstract

Medium voltage (MV) switchgear at 20 kV, known as Panel Hubung Bagi (PHB) 20 kV in Indonesia, is a critical component of the electrical power distribution system, containing fuses, switches, and power conductors. A failure in this switchgear could lead to system-wide malfunctions, with potential catastrophic consequences such as fires or explosions. To prevent such events, it is essential to perform regular and well-planned maintenance. This research aims to optimize the maintenance process for MV switchgear, focusing on reducing maintenance tasks and frequency without compromising system reliability. The study employs the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) methodology, refined to reduce unnecessary maintenance actions. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was also conducted to analyze previous research on FMEA applications in 20 kV MV switchgear maintenance. Traditionally, maintenance was guided by manufacturers' recommendations, experience, and technical judgment, resulting in 3554 man-hours (MH) of labor every two years. However, by applying the refined FMEA process, maintenance requirements were significantly reduced to just 212 MH over the same period. This reduction represents a cost saving of 1678%, while still ensuring that the reliability of the MV switchgear at 20 kV is maintained at a high level. These findings underscore the importance of adopting systematic maintenance approaches to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs in power distribution systems.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as an “undersea paradise” because of its extraordinary wealth of marine biodiversity and fishery resources. With this nickname, coastal communities should have a decent life. However, in reality, their welfare is not in line with the wealth of marine resources, especially for fishermen. The lives of fishermen are often colored by economic challenges, weather uncertainty, and environmental changes that impact their welfare. This study aims to identify sources of livelihood, identify levels of welfare, and identify livelihood strategies carried out by fishing households. Through a survey that we conducted on 35 small-scale fishing households on the West Coast of North Sumatra, we found that most of them were still classified as less prosperous. Although the livelihood analysis shows that their sources of income are quite diverse, the contribution of income outside of fishing has not been able to improve their level of welfare. The results of this study also show that fishermen are not a passive group of people. Realizing the uncertainty in their livelihoods, they try to take advantage of existing opportunities by implementing livelihood strategies. The livelihood strategies carried out by fishermen are classified into economic dimensions, ecological dimensions, and social dimensions.

Abstract

More than a year has passed since Francisco Pérez-Arribas (2023) introduced a parametric-based hull design method using Python scripts, beginning with the cross-sectional area (CSA) design. Several experimental studies have been carried out to improve the method and the quality of ship design. This study aims to generate an optimal hull design by utilizing normal vectors derived from the x and y vectors. These normal vectors are applied parametrically to determine the shape of the hull. The study also employs a cubic spline-based parametric technique for designing yacht hulls. The purpose of this study is to introduce the concept of parametric design through the development of visual programming used to form cross-sectional area curves and generate hull geometry. This study also discusses both the advantages and limitations of using visual programming approaches to accelerate the design process. By varying the CSA shape of the DelftShip model, the resulting parametric model has a high level of accuracy, with a difference of - 0.097016% in LCB and -0.28785% in volume when compared to the DelftShip model. results from Grasshopper reveal significant differences, particularly below a draft of 0.475, where the CP values from Grasshopper are lower than those from DelftShip. The parametric approach using normal vectors not only facilitates design exploration but also holds the potential to enhance overall hull design quality and optimization.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of extending the hull length of the KL Barombong training vessel, specifically on speed resistance, engine power requirements, propeller efficiency, and fuel consumption. The objective is to assess how these modifications impact overall vessel performance, particularly fuel efficiency and operational costs. Using Maxsurf simulation software, we analyzed the vessel's performance before and after the modification. Results show that extending the hull increased hydrodynamic resistance, requiring more engine power and raising fuel consumption by 12-15%. Additionally, the propeller efficiency declined due to the higher load. These findings emphasize the need for engine-propeller optimization during vessel modifications to ensure operational efficiency and sustainability. Recommendations for future modifications and system upgrades are also provided.

Abstract

This review investigates the role of microalgae in bioelectricity production through biophotovoltaic (BPV) systems, focusing on their dual benefits of generating renewable energy and treating wastewater while capturing CO2. The objective of this paper is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of publications from 2013 to 2024 to understand research trends, key contributors, and research hotspots in the field of microalgae-based BPV systems. Methods used include statistical analysis through VOSviewer to visualize the connections between articles and authors. The results show significant advancements in integrating of nanomaterials and microbial fuel cell technologies for bioelectricity generation, as well as ongoing challenges in scalability, voltage balance, and material optimization. This review provides insights into future research directions for improving BPV systems.

Abstract

The Polyculture Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei can reduce the risk of ecological impacts, increase shrimp growth, survival, production, increase shrimp resistance to disease, and maintain optimal water quality. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) begins by determining the priority between water quality, growth rate, and harvest yields as more optimal parameters for the success of a polyculture. The measure of success is determined based on the results of expert assessments of polyculture and cultivation that produce more optimal water quality (temperature, pH, brightness, salinity, and dissolved oxygen), growth rates, and harvest yields. The results of the overall AHP analysis, which determined the success of Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei polyculture based on expert assessments, showed a good level of consistency. The results show that water quality is a priority parameter in the success of Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei polyculture with a weight of 0.597, followed by a growth rate of 0.297 and a harvest yield of 0.106. The analysis of priority water quality indicators for the success of polyculture is dissolved oxygen with a weight of 0.514, followed by pH of 0.246, salinity of 0.119, temperature of 0.079, and brightness of 0.042. Based on the results of experts of the combined weight comparison, polyculture is more optimal than cultivation, with a considerable comparison weight of 0.678 and 0.322, measuring the success of Caulerpa sp and Litopenaeus vannamei polyculture.

Abstract

Along with the increase in trade activities by sea, the need for adequate port facilities, including the Container Yard, is becoming increasingly important. This study aims to analyze the needs of stacking yard facilities at Sorong Container Port. The research method used is a quantitative approach with data collection through documentation studies and observation at the research location, namely Sorong Container Port. The results showed that although the flow of containers is projected to continue to increase until 2026, the use of the stacking yard is still low with a Yard Occupancy Ratio (YOR) ranging from 12.43% to 14.59%. This indicates an opportunity to improve port operational efficiency. This study recommends optimizing the use of the piling yard, improving the loading and unloading process, developing infrastructure, and improving coordination with stakeholders. Further analysis of infrastructure investment and comparative studies with other ports are also recommended.
