Abstract

The aimed of this research is to test the effectiveness of using Pecha Kucha Technique in students’ speaking performance at fourth semester of English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Metro. Pecha Kucha is a presentation form of 20 pictures for 20 seconds and it is also called 20x20 presentations.The entire presentation always lasts for exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The research method used in this research is an experimental research. The subjects of this research are the students at fourth semester of English Department in Muhammadiyah University of Metro academic year 2020. There are 21 students of control group and 21 students of experimental group. The research instrument used to collect the data in this research is an oral test. From the two classes, the experimental and control group, the measurement shows that increasing line of the speaking ability of the experimental group is higher than the control group. The result of pre-test score shows that the average score of the experimental group and the control group are 52.38 and 56.19. From the score of both groups, the result shows that the control group is better than experimental group. Then, the result of the post test of the experimental group is higher than control group; the average scores are 70,71 for experimental group and 62.38 for control group. It can be concluded that there is significant influence of using Pecha Kucha Technique in students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

This study aimed to know the perception of Indonesian students in standardized English proficiency in TOEFL. The research design of this study employed  descriptive research. Twenty-seven students from several degrees in university level were selected randomly as the participants. To examine students’ perception, the researcher employed Google Form as an instrument to collect data, and the researcher also employed an interview section as supporting data. In collecting data, the researcher attached nine questions in Google form. Therefore, the questionnaires were analyzed to identify the perception of students in TOEFL as a standardized English Language Proficiency test. In methodology, the researcher employed mix method to investigate in this study, and the questioners distributed randomly by using WhatsApp. Regarding findings in this study, the conclusion revealed that TOEFL as a standardized proficiency test still could be as a benchmark to measure English proficiency in certain kinds such as TOEFL ITP. In addition, the other assessments could be possible as an instrument to measure English proficiency such as portfolio, peer assessment and many more.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to create a student handout for eighth graders. The research was carried out in an R&D manner. Students' requirements were first assessed through observational guidance, and then more data was gathered using questionnaires and documents. Students from SMP in the eighth grade participated in this study. The researcher used some of the ADDIE model's recommendations when creating the new material. Analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation are all terms used to describe these steps in the process. A thematic analysis of the qualitative data was performed. According to the findings of the analysis stage, students require additional material in the form of handouts that focuses on three different text kinds. As a consequence of observation and analysis, the researcher will design and build the materials. The researcher must validate the product before it can be made available to end customers. Finally, the study's findings demonstrate that the handout provided to eighth-grade students at SMP meets their educational needs.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the effect using Edmodo application on the students’ writing skill of analytical exposition text at SMAN 4 Palangka Raya. Data of the students score of writing Analytical Exposition text was collected using writing test, and the hypothesis testing was examined based on t-test for normally because the data distribution was normal. A test in form of writing analytical exposition text was used the instrument to collect the data needed. Then, the data were analyzed by using parametric statistic dependent sample T – test because the data were normally distributed. The writer took conclusion based on statistical result. The result of this research shows that the critical value for students T distribution was 1.734 the critical value t0 was t05 {19} = 1.729. Because 1.734 is greater than 1.729, null hypothesis was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that there was significant effect of using Edmodo Application in writing Analytical Exposition Text gained by eleventh grade of SMAN 4 Palangka Raya. Thus, Edmodo Application had been successful in improving students’ writing ability of Analytical Exposition text. The researcher suggest that the teacher should provide an appropriate media in teaching English, especially for Analytical Exposition Text and made Edmodo Application as reference to him/her to use it for making students’ attracted to the material.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the analysis of clause complex of analytical exposition text written by the English teachers of SMKN 2 Palangka Raya. Considering that teachers have important role in education field, in which teachers have a function as the model in teaching learning process, especially in teaching English and it is the consideration that the subjects of the study will be the English teachers. The study design of this study was descriptive qualitative. By means of a descriptive study under Systemic Functional Linguistics theory as suggested by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014), the writers employ the analysis of taxis systems which cover elaboration, extension, and enhancement. Besides, logico-semantic relation is also analyzed which covers projection and expansion The data will be analyzed through systemic functional approach in which the analysis of the data will be based the clauses and its taxis (protasis and hypotaxis) along with its logico-semantic relations from text by the teacher.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating written corrective feedback applied by an English teacher in writing class at eighth grade students of SMP NU Palangka Raya. Two research questions were formulated in this study. (1) How is the teacher written corrective feedback technique applied in English class of SMP NU Palangka Raya; (2) What are written feedback patterns applied by an English teacher in writing class at eighth grade students of SMP NU Palangka Raya.  This study was case study with qualitative approach. For the data collection, it was used the instruments such as observation equipped with observation checklist, interview equipped with interview guideline, documentation and field notes. To analyze the data, it was through the techniques: data collection, data display, data reduction, and conclusion/drawing. For the data endorsement, it was used triangulation technique. The results showed that the teacher applied written corrective feedback technique in the class by some steps. The written corrective feedback applied by the teacher focuses on correct word choice, punctuation, grammar, organization, spelling, and content. The teacher also used affective feedback which feedback in the form of motivation on teacher’s writing. The patterns of written corrective feedback were feedback sandwich and gold star. Students’ response through written corrective feedback applied were: (1) teacher written feedback was objective, (2) teacher written feedback was clear, (3) teacher written feedback assisted the students (4) teacher written feedback was encouraging

Abstract

Good teaching is the most basic important thing has teachers try to do in their classes and it is also in it the most frequently used language skills in communication activities. It plays an important role in the language learning process and facilitates the use of language skills. In this study the researchers tackled teaching anxiety that refers to the psychological response of a person to teaching task, which is determined by effect of feelings, believes and behaviors. And the relationship between teaching anxiety and the mastery of the daily lesson plan, which teaching means a system that enables a teacher to express himself/herself effectively with his/her interlocutors of a target language. The study questions are: Do Iraqi EFL preparatory school teachers have teaching anxiety? Do Iraqi EFL preparatory school teachers have mastery daily lesson plan? And is there any relationship between teaching anxiety and mastery daily lesson plan? Accordingly, the current study aims at finding out: Iraqi EFL preparatory school teachers’ teaching Anxiety level, Iraqi EFL preparatory school teachers’ mastery daily lesson plan level, and the relationship between Iraqi EFL preparatory School teachers` teaching anxiety and the mastery of the daily lesson plan. The sample of the present study consists of (30) male and female teachers from Iraqi EFL preparatory school teachers chosen randomly from Baghdad city.To achieve the aims of the present study, two instruments have been applied by the researchers, English Foreign language teaching anxiety scale and a English Foreign language lesson plan scale is constructed by the researchers themselves. After ensuring the validity and reliability of the instruments, the instruments have been applied and the data have been collected. Then a number of statistical tools have been used to analyze the obtained data.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is generally interpreted as an approach to learning English based on the goals/needs of the learner. In the context of learning English in Indonesia, both at secondary and tertiary schools, especially for automotive students, the ESP approach is a popular choice. The application of this approach is in line with the government policy in the field of education which emphasizes the purpose of learning English, namely to improve the ability of students to use English, especially for academic and professional career needs with an emphasis on reading skills that allow students to understand authentic material topics according to their majors. effectively. This article puts forward a theoretical study of the basic concepts of ESP including its definition and role as a learning approach, along with related issues including needs analysis as the main feature of ESP, syllabus, learning objectives, materials, methodology, and evaluation of ESP-based English learning.

Abstract

In general, a language is a tool for communication that every people use, and as we know there are many languages especially in Indonesia. It is a regional or local language that people use for their daily activities with their family or with their local people, Indonesian language is an official language that people use on, the daily activities in formal places or with work partners. Indonesia's government has already made some regular or policy to manage language use also the regulation about English as a foreign language. But the use of the English language is not optimal especially in the world of education even though English has become the lingua franca in the world. For such a stance, the writer has no goal to blame any culture nor suggests that English culture is not meant to be learned. The writer concerns more with the idea that in learning English, the culture of learners is more urgent than English culture since the use of English is around peer communication. The awareness of English as an International language and as a language of science is responded with mandatory English teaching in Junior High school to the varsity level. However, with the status as a foreign language, English is occasionally used outside the classroom. Even during the class, instead of speaking English, the Indonesian students tend to speak in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language) or their local language. For that, the writer gives some proposed solutions after analyzing some literature, The writer used the Systematic Literature Review framework from (Okoli, 2015) to perform this review of the literature

Abstract

The Use of Youtube Video by Non-English Major Students for Speaking Skills. This study was conducted to investigate the use of social media especially YouTube by students the Non-English Major of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Palangka Raya. It was also to see the impact of using social media especially YouTube to improve their speaking ability. The study design of this study was descriptive qualitative. Fifteen students of the Faculty of Economics were selected as participants to speak in front of a handphone camera with the topics already prepared. Five online meetings were done to know their progress. The Semi-structured interview was also done to collect the supporting data of deeper information needed. The result showed that the use of social media especially YouTube gave a high impact on the speaking ability of Non-English Major students as seen from their video and deep information from the interview. However, there was various resistance dealing with the efforts to increase their speaking ability, they are psychological factors (lessmotivated, not confident),environment factor (the relationship with their environment), linguistic factors (finding references, vocabulary selection, speaking style, and gesture). The use of social media especially YouTube might make the students feel easier in overcoming the various resistance to improve speaking ability.
