Abstract

Speaking as one of the four skills in English is seen as the most crucial skill to be mastered by English learners.  For most people the successes in learning a language can be seen from how far the student can speak and communicate in the language learn. But in fact, speaking is often neglected in the classroom. The objective of this research is to investigate techniques in teaching speaking skill in second semester of primary school department of Widya Gama Mahakam University. This study employs the qualitative design by which the researcher intends to discover and understand techniques of teaching speaking used by the lecture in its natural setting. The subject of this research was second semester students of primary school department. This study reveals four techniques employed by the lecturer in teaching speaking skill,   i.e. show-and-tell,   presentation,   drama making,   and question and answer. Show-and-tell and presentation technique are two types of performance talk which were used more often by the lecturer than the two other techniques (i.e. drama making and question and answer).

Abstract

The study expects to an investigation of derivational appends in the content of initiation discourse by Steve Jobs. The essayist utilized the majority of the words that were connected prefix and postfix as the information. The information sources were all content of initiation discourse by Steve Jobs. This study utilizing subjective plan and substance investigation approach. The aftereffect of the study demonstrated that there were 78 all out words in the content of Commencement discourse which joined derivational fastens. The study discovered 69 postfixes and 9 prefixes. Abstract

The need for speaking mastery in English has been dramatically increasing because of the confirmed position of English as a language for international communication. Unfortunately, most of students get less of appreciation in classroom speaking activities. Therefore, to establish a natural approach where students could develop L2 fluency more effectively than what has occurred inside the classroom, the researchers tried Pair Taping (PT) in their Speaking Class. A number of studies have indicated that using PT facilitate students’ fluency and confidence (Washburn & Christianson: 1996, Kubo: 2009, Kluge & Taylor: 2000, and Nguyen: 2012). This current study attempted at answering the questions related to: 1) the potential benefit of PT upon the students’ speaking fluency, 2) the students’ perspectives on their English speaking performance, and 3) the students’ attitudes toward PT. The findings revealed that pair taping could be conducive to promote students’ speaking fluency along with developing their knowledge of language. It also advances our understanding of how pair taping makes contribution to foreign language learning and provide useful insight to teachers, lecturers or course designers in designing speaking course. The implementation of this study was found to be helpful in building up students’ speaking skills by offering innovative learning experience to students.

Abstract

In Indonesia, English teachers use textbooks to help students in the teaching-learning process and use it as a self-help resource to get rich input in learning. To improve the quality of English language teaching in Indonesia, this research was conducted to measure whether the three books used in Senior High School, i.e. “Bahasa Inggris”, “Pathway to English”, and “Outcomes Upper Intermediate” are right or not. This research used Alan Cunningsworth’s theory on excellent textbook and tried to find the strengths and weaknesses of the three books based on the given methods above. The study was conducted using evaluation research to evaluate the three English textbooks used by some schools in Yogyakarta. Evaluation steps included taking some samples from the books to see whether they meet the criteria of good textbooks that the researcher developed based on Cunningsworth’s framework. The research found out that Bahasa Inggris meets five standards: aims and approaches, design and organisation, topic, teachers’ book, and political consideration. Pathway to English meets four standards of excellent textbook by Cunningsworth: aims and approaches, design and organisation, teachers’ book, and political attention. Outcomes Upper Intermediate matches five principles of excellent manual by Cunningsworth: goals and methods, design and organisation, skills, topic, and teachers’ book. The researcher also found out that the strengths and weaknesses of “Bahasa Inggris”, “Pathway to English”, and “Outcomes Upper Intermediate”. From the findings above, the researcher suggests the teacher use three textbooks in the teaching-learning process because three books meet the criteria in a good book.

Abstract

Indonesia's development of information and communication technology has overgrown. This can be seen by users of smartphones, a variety of Indonesian blogs, facebook or other social media and internet users. Virtual Reality is one of the information and communication technologies which started to develop in Indonesia. For this study the exploratory design approach was used to investigate the perceptions of lecturers regarding the teaching and learning adoption of VR with some indicators the benefits, ease of use, Challenges to the Adoption and skill of VR, that VR has the potential to enrich with interactive simulations and stunning visuals that immerse students in authentic learning experiences also it can push the boundaries of the traditional classroom to be engaging, creative, and responsive to the needs of the student.

Abstract

In general, a language is a tool for communication that every people use, and as we know there are many languages especially in Indonesia. It is a regional or local language that people use for their daily activities with their family or with their local people, Indonesian language is an official language that people use on, the daily activities in formal places or with work partners. Indonesia's government has already made some regular or policy to manage language use also the regulation about English as a foreign language. But the use of the English language is not optimal especially in the world of education even though English has become the lingua franca in the world. For such a stance, the writer has no goal to blame any culture nor suggests that English culture is not meant to be learned. The writer concerns more with the idea that in learning English, the culture of learners is more urgent than English culture since the use of English is around peer communication. The awareness of English as an International language and as a language of science is responded with mandatory English teaching in Junior High school to the varsity level. However, with the status as a foreign language, English is occasionally used outside the classroom. Even during the class, instead of speaking English, the Indonesian students tend to speak in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language) or their local language. For that, the writer gives some proposed solutions after analyzing some literature, The writer used the Systematic Literature Review framework from (Okoli, 2015) to perform this review of the literature

Abstract

Writing is one of skills in English language proficiency which is considered as a complex and important element to passive communication. In addition, an ability of writing good composition has become one of requirements to successful life in many major aspects. Specifically to particular unit in learning writing in EFL classroom, feedback is the key for students to get their essay quality improved better. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate feedback given by writing lecturer whether in traditional and e-feedback, as well as digging students’ preference towards those methods. Classroom observation and students’ open-ended questionnaires were used as major instruments, while semi-structured interview to writing lecturer was also used as supporting data. The result showed that most of the students prefer to be given the e-feedback to assess their essay instead of the traditional one. This study also reveals high expectation to the use of vary electronic media from the students, therefore future implication is clearly derived to the creativity of writing lecturer so that the students will be more motivated and surely improved in terms of structural and content aspects of writing.

Abstract

The learning experience that motivates students can be created where competence is quantitatively assessed using gamification technology. A survey of students' opinions of gamification was conducted to determine the best practices of its use, the environmental conditions necessary for its success, and the manner in which the application should proceed. The effects of gamification on math achievement were examined using quantitative methods. The Kahoot application was found to be the preferred method of gamification in this study. These 80 English students took part in the experiment and studied at the Department. The findings revealed that adding gamification to the course increased the overall interest of students and boosted the aspirations of students to succeed in the course. This method also has a strong impact on the motivation of students. What this study found was that Kahoot can be used to successfully gamify lessons. In my research, the gamification method led to greater engagement by students.

Abstract

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) merupakan tes kecakapan Bahasa Inggris terstandar yang menjadi prasyarat untuk melanjutkan studi atau berkerja di luar negeri. Penting bagi Mahasiswa dan Dosen FKIP Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Widya Gama Mahakam untuk mengetahui tes IELTS ini, mempertimbangkan kebutuhan mereka untuk melanjutkan studi dan atau berkerja di luar negeri. Hasil tes IELTS ini dapat diterima di hampir seluruh Negara. Namun, karena tingkat kesulitan tes ini cukup tinggi begitu pula dengan biaya mengikuti tes ini, maka diperlukan persiapan yang matang sebelum mengambil tes IELTS. Oleh karena itu, pelatihan ini dilaksanakan untuk merespon kebutuhan siswa dan dosen dalam perkenalan dan persiapan untuk mengambil tes IELTS.Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan dengan cara menyelengarakan pelatihan dan simulasi yang terbagi dalam dua hari. Hari pertama, tanggal 13 Mei 2017, diperuntukkan bagi mahasiswa FKIP Pendidikan bahasa Inggris, dari jam 9.00 – 14.00. Sementara itu, pelatihan dan simulasi IELTS untuk Dosen FKIP Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dilaksanakan tanggal 10 Juli 2017, dari jam 8.00 – 16.30. Kedua acara ini dilaksanakan di Ruang Laboratorium Bahasa Universitas Widya Gama Mahakam Samarinda. Jl Wahid Hasyim. Mahasiswa yang terdaftar saat proses registrasi adalah 38 orang, namun yang hadir adalah 28 orang. Sementar itu, untuk peserta Dosen, yang diundang adalah 15 orang, dan yang hadir adalah 5 orang.Kegiatan ini berakhir di tanggal 10 Juli 2017. Adapun outcomes berdasarkan hasil simulasi IELTS, rata-rata mahasiswa memperoleh Band 4, sementara para Dosen memperoleh rata-rata Band 5,yang berarti kemampuan kecakapan berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa dan dosen masih memadai namun belum cukup untuk bertahan dalam mengikuti perkuliahan di luar negeri. Dari hasil tes essay, terlihat bahwa Dosen dan Mahasiswa masih memiliki kesulitan dalam membuat Essay akademik dalam waktu terbatas (60 menit). Sehingga, pelatihan khusus untuk memperbaiki keahlian menulis akademis diperlukan tindak lanjut.

Abstract

Tes TOEFL merupakan tes kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang masih diperhitungkan dalam dunia kerja pada saat ini. Oleh karena itu, hampir semua instansi pemerintah mewajibkan kepada pegawai maupun calon pegawai untuk memiliki score TOEFL. Maka dari itu, kami dari tim pengabdian mencoba mengambil kesempatan tersebut untuk bisa mengadakan pelatihan atau sejenis workshop kepada seluruh peserta Pelatihan Kepemimpinan di Lembaga Administrasi Negara dengan jumlah peserta 60 orang. Di lembaga tersebut Tes TOEFL dijadikan sebagai salah satu persyaratan untuk lulus dalam pelatihan, maka dari itu pelatihan ini dibutuhkan untuk membekali seluruh peserta sebelum mereka mengikuti tes yang sebenarnya. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan di aula serbaguna Lembaga Administrasi Negara (LAN).  Masalah yang dihadapi oleh peserta adalah peserta merupakan aparatur negara yg sudah tidak lama bergelut dengan dunia akademis sehingga sulit untuk memahami konteks bacaan terlebih dalam bahasa Inggris. Maka dari itu, pemateri berusaha memberikan tips dan trik mengerjakan tes TOEFL seefisien mungkin.
