Abstract

This study aimed to describe about the factors that caused students’ speaking anxiety and the students’ strategies to reduce the anxiety in basic spoken English class. The participants of the study were 18 students who took basic spoken English class in the first semester. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The data were obtained from interviews and observation. The findings revealed that the students’ speaking anxiety in basic spoken English was derived from some factors provoked by both internal and external matters. The first factor was type of task. The task became something that causes anxiety if the students’ were asked to present the activities in front of the class. The second was fear of making mistakes. All the students felt the same thing about their anxious feeling when they made mistakes. The third was the role of language teachers. It was related to how teachers create a classroom atmosphere that was suitable for the teaching and learning process. The fourth factor was self-perception, self-perception in this context is a perception that causes a negative effect on students. The last factor was limited exposure to English. Limited exposure to English in their environment impedes the development of their communicative proficiency. The results of this study also found that there were good strategies which they applied to reduce anxiety. The first was the preparation before learning English, it helped students to feel better because they had material that they could use for the learning. The second strategy was positive thinking. Positive thinking as a psychological factor was needed to cope the language anxiety and to lose a fear of being anxiety in the classroom. The last strategy that they used was peer seeking. It was often done by the students. The students liked to ask a friend if there was something that they did not understand

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the students’ perception of using Hot Potatoes software as the media of vocabulary test at SMKN 2 Palangka Raya, Indonesia. It was qualitative research with five participating students as the participants from grade X OTKP 3. An in-depth semi-structured interview was applied as the data collection technique. The theme-based analysis was used in this study. The finding shows that the students give a positive response to the use of Hot Potatoes. Students’ perceptions while learning using Hot Potatoes are; first, Hot Potatoes is more practical for a vocabulary test. Second, the game can attract the students’ attention to the test. Third, it helps the students to be more motivated in the classroom. This study implies that the use of Hot Potatoes at the tenth grade students in SMKN 2 Palangka Raya can be an alternative for teachers to teach vocabulary and provide fun learning activities for the students.

Abstract

This research aims to improve the learning outcomes of English Subject Subjects with Passive Voice by applying the Window-shopping learning model to class IX E students of SMP Negeri 5 Banjarmasin Odd Semesters in the 2021/2022 Academic Year. It was in two cycles: planning and implementing the action, observing (observation), and reflection. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation and then analyzed descriptively by percentage. The results showed an increase in English learning outcomes for passive voice in Class IXE students at SMP Negeri 5 Banjarmasin through the window-shopping learning model. It can be seen from the increase in student learning outcomes from the pre-cycle, first, and second cycles. Its average value in the pre-cycle was 63.4, increased to 68.3 in the first cycle, and increased again in the second cycle to 74.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to create a Communicative Language Teaching based module for Economic Education Department Students of STKIP Muhammadiyah Sampit. The research was carried out in an R&D manner. The data was gathered using questionnaires and documents. The participant of this research was First semester students of Economic Education of STKIP Muhammadiyah Sampit. The researcher Yalden’s model when creating the module that are needs analysis, development, validation and revision, testing, and final revision. A thematic analysis of the qualitative data was performed. According to the findings of the need analysis stage, students need a module to help them mastering English for Economic Education. As a consequence of analysis, the researcher will design and build the materials. The researcher must validate the product before it can be made available to end customers. Finally, the study's findings demonstrate that the modul provided to Economic Education students at STKIP Muhammadiyah Sampit meets their educational needs.

Abstract

This study was aimed at determining: (1) the types of onomatopoeia by using NVivo, (2) the mimetic meanings classification of onomatopoeia by using NVivo (3) the English to Indonesian onomatopoeia translations in contextual meaning and their icon, index, and symbol of both languages used in Kung Fu Panda 2 Movie by using NVivo.This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach because the main purpose of this study is to find out the facts or descriptions of the onomatopoeia by using an application named NVivo. Contents analysis is a type of research because this research is centered on certain content or movie characteristics. The application helps analysis become more organize, analyze and visualize and unstructured information by providing tools for classifying, sorting and arranging data in ways that enable the identification of themes and patterns. The main data sources are all collected from movie scenes containing English onomatopoeia and supporting sources are from Indonesian onomatopoeia, both native speakers and other literature. As a result of research shows that the origin of 46 onomatopoeia: First, all types can be found in the film either they are lexical and non-lexical or personal, associative, but example. Likewise, all the structured divisions regarding the meaning of mimesis can be found, they namely phonomimetics, phenomimetics, psychomimetics, phonomimetics & phenomimetics, and phenomimetics & psychomimetics. Lastly, provide that English as well as Indonesian is iconic and symbolic, nothing indexical. Besides, that to obtained from asynchronous angles as follows:(a) a few onomatopoeia can be natural and lexical derivation, (b) one onomatopoeia can convey more than one mimetic meaning classification, (c) one onomatopoeia can be characterized for more than one marker foundation, (d) sound symbolism is implemented, (e) maximum onomatopoeia are monosyllabic, only few have 2 phrases each reduplication, and (f) it's far proven that the origin of each languages have total identical, almost equal, very distinct, and completely distinctive.

Abstract

In spite of the importance of listening in the process of EFL teaching and learning, this competency is not getting as much attention as the other ones; consequently, students are less motivated to depend on their listening comprehension as a tool to help them in the process of language learning. The main purpose of this research study is to bring out one of the World Wide Web‟s most important sites which is YouTube and show its ability to evolve listening comprehension of EFL learners. This research aims to examine the impact of blending the use of YouTube videos within the process of EFL teaching and learning. The study focuses on the university students’ attitudes towards the use of YouTube Video on their listening performance. Questionnaire are used with EFL learners at Islamic University of Kalimantan, Banjarmasin. The data are gathered and analysed in order to describe opinions from EFL learners using YouTube videos as means to enhance the learners’ listening comprehension. The findings show that learners have a positive attitudes towards the internet in general and the use of YouTube videos as a means to develop listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a material for seventh graders, with the topics of Local Content based on TPACK framework. The local content specifically used to fulfil the requirement of mover school curriculum to accommodate the students’ background in the learning process. This research uses the model of ADDIE in R&D manner. From the first step of analysis, the data gathered from observation, document analysis and initial interview with the teacher as the need analysis. Design as the second process, is a phase where the data interpretation from the gathered data met the TPACK framework, to combine the Technological knowledge, Content knowledge, and Pedagogical knowledge. A qualitative analysis of data triangulation later be showcased to see the relations of TPACK and local content. After finishing the design, a development of suitable material based on the data triangulation will turned into instruction, procedure, and material by the researcher. Prior to the deployment of the end product of the material, there is a process of validation to meet the feasibility and ability of both students and teacher to use the new material. To conclude the process, both implementation and evaluation consecutively done by the researcher to answer the need analysis as the findings of the end product. So, the new material can be accepted by the teacher and students of seventh grade at SMP to improve their learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to produce the appropriate digital learning modules.in English subject for grade 9 at SMP Islam Al Azhar.13. Surabaya, find out the appropriateness of digital learning modules in English subject. based on the criteria for teaching materials which were determined by the Board of National Standard Education, find out the results of responses of grade 9 students after using the digital learning modules.in English Subject. This research is a kind of development research. (Research and Development) with reference to the modified ASSURE.development model including (1) Analyze Learners (2) State Objectives (3) Select Methods, Media and Materials (4) Develop Products (5) Validate Product (6) Conduct Product Trial (7) Evaluate and Revise Product. The research subjects included media expert lecturer, material expert lecturer, subject matter expert teacher, and 20 students of grade 9 at SMP Islam Al Azhar. 13 Surabaya. The object of this research is digital learning modules. The instruments used to assess the appropriateness of digital learning modules included appropriateness' assessment sheet by media expert, appropriateness' assessment sheets by material experts, and student response questionnaires on the use of digital learning modules. The results of the study revealed that the appropriateness of the digital learning modules.in English subject in terms of the media included very appropriate categories. In term of materials included very appropriate categories. The learning process included a decent category.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of developing teaching materials on the learning of high school students and knowing the effect of developing teaching materials English image media on the speaking ability of high school students (SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL). The design of research and development of teaching materials used refers to research design and development modification of the Borg & Gall development model (1985) and Kemp & Dayton (1985). The subject of the study were the students of High School students. The result of this study is 13 units of varied material. The material consists of variety of topics related to tourist spots and well known places in South Kalimantan.

Abstract

English lessons are very important for students, and learning English should be introduced to students as early as possible, so that at an adult age students can keep up with international developments. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the process of learning English as well as possible, so that the goals that have been set are successfully achieved by students. In order to achieve success in teaching English to children, especially school age, teachers must have knowledge about young learners, characteristics of young learners, learning styles of young learners, techniques of teaching, and how to develop learning materials for young learners. So that by understanding the characteristics of children's learning, how students learn in class, teachers can choose appropriate techniques and can develop learning materials appropriately according to the needs and development of students.
