Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding is a critical lifesaving intervention in conflict settings like the Gaza Strip. This study assessed mothers' adherence to breastfeeding and weaning practices during wartime and identified barriers to optimal infant feeding.   Method: A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted, targeting 200 mothers attending maternal and child health centers in the middle area of Gaza from July to Sept, 2025. Convenient sampling was approached and data were collected through structured questionnaires. The SPSS software was used for analysis.   Result: Majority of mothers (84.5%) initiated breastfeeding immediately after birth. Only 29.5% adhered to exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months, and 82.1% continued breastfeeding after six months in combination with complementary feeding. Around 70% of mothers reported using alternative feeding, mostly formula milk (76.1%). Barriers to breastfeeding included food shortages (50.4%), psychological stress (30.7%), and lack of breastfeeding support (56.5%).   Conclusion: Most mothers initiated breastfeeding, but adherence to exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months is considerably low. Many mothers resorted to alternative feeding methods, particularly formula milk, due to the compounded challenges of wartime conditions. A significant gap between maternal knowledge of recommended practices and the harsh realities of war is observed. It is highly need to strengthen the role of health personnel on exclusive breastfeeding support strategies, and to enhance psychosocial and nutritional support for breastfeeding mothers during wars. Also, to emphasize the importance of implementing WHO and UNICEF standards in regulating the distribution of formula milk and limiting its use to documented medical conditions.             Keywords: Breast-feeding, Weaning, Alternatives feeding, Knowledge, Practices, Perception

Abstract

Introduction: Stunting remains a critical public helath issue in Indonesia. This study aimed to develop and evaluated the effectiveness of a Family-Centered Empowerment Model (FCEM) intervention designed to improve complementary feeding practices as a strategic approach to prevent stunting.   Method: A mixed-methods study was conducted from June to September 2024 at the Kalasan Community Health Centre, Sleman, Indonesia, involving 97 families with stunted children aged 6-24 months. The participatory intervention, structured around the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, included training, mentoring, and community support. Quantitative data were collected via validating questionnaires and analyzed using paired t-tests and Cohen’s d to calculate effect sizes. Qualitative data were gathered through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with participants and health cadres, the analyzed thematically to understand the implementation process and contextual factors.   Result: The FCEM program led to statistically significant and substantive improvement in all domain (P<0.001). Mean scores increased by 1.40 point for knowledge, 1.65 points for health behaviors, and 1.31 points for family dynamics. Calculated effect sizes ranged from 0.82 to 1.17, indicated large intervention effect. Qualitative findings revealed enhanced family-health worker collaboration and increased confidence in preparing nutritious local foods as key facilitators.   Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that the FCEM is an effective, community-based intervention for improving complementary feeding practices and can be considered a strategic model for stunting prevention programs.   Keywords: Complementary feeding; Family empowerment; Stunting; Participatory development; Toddler

Abstract

Introduction: Bullying is a global public health issue that predominantly affects adolescents in school settings and is associated with both short- and long-term adverse consequences. Student engagement and responsible decision-making represent essential soft-skill learning components that contribute to character development and play a critical role in bullying prevention. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationships between student engagement, decision-making capacity, and bullying behavior among adolescent students.   Method: This cross-sectional study involved 167 adolescent students from a public school and employed a purposive sampling technique. The variables assessed included student engagement and decision-making capacity, with bullying behavior serving as the dependent variable. All variables were measured using school bullying questionnaire, decision-making capacity questionnaire, Delaware student engagement scale that demonstrated established validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation, with a significance level set at p ≤ 0.005.   Result: Most students demonstrated high student engagement and good to very good decision-making capacity, while bullying behavior was predominantly low. Significant negative associations were found between student engagement and bullying behavior (ρ = −0.273, p < 0.001) and between decision-making capacity and bullying behavior (ρ = −0.239, p = 0.002), indicating that higher engagement and stronger decision-making skills were associated with lower levels of bullying among adolescents.   Conclusion: Higher levels of student engagement and decision-making capacity were associated with lower bullying behavior among adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening student engagement and responsible decision-making skills as key components of school-based bullying prevention strategies.   Keywords: adolescent; bullying; decision making capacity; student engagement.

Abstract

Introduction: The 2021 eruption of Mount Semeru caused severe damage and forced the affected residents to be permanently relocated to residential areas. Although relocation improves physical safety, relocated communities continue to face psychological, social, and economic challenges that may affect their well-being. Resilience is recognized as a key factor supporting adaptation after disasters; however, evidence on its association with quality of life in long-term relocation settings remains limited. This study aims to determine the relationship between resilience and quality of life in adults relocated to residential areas.   Method: Analytic correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted in January 2024 in Mount Semeru Relocation area. A total of 111 respondents were recruited using purposive sampling, with eligibility based on age (>18 years), residency duration (≥6 months), disaster exposure, literacy, and willingness to participate. Resilience was measured using the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), while quality of life was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rho correlation.   Result: Most respondents demonstrated moderate resilience, and more than half reported good quality of life. Statistical analysis revealed a significant positive association between resilience and quality of life (r = 0.337; p < 0.001), indicating that individuals with higher resilience tend to experience better physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being in the resettlement setting.   Conclusion: Resilience is an important determinant of quality of life among communities permanently relocated after the Mount Semeru eruption. Efforts to strengthen psychosocial support, enhance livelihood recovery, and foster social cohesion are essential to improve long-term adaptation and well-being in post-disaster relocation environments.   Keywords: Mount Semeru Eruption, Quality of Life, Relocation, Resilience

Abstract

Introduction: Climate change anxiety represents a frequently overlooked yet significant issue with profound implications for adolescent development. While environmental awareness among youth serves as a crucial foundation for pro-environmental behaviors, research examining the relationship between climate change awareness and anxiety levels among adolescents in Denpasar City remains limited. This study aimed to assess whether adolescents' climate change awareness predicts climate anxiety levels.   Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 434 high school students in Denpasar using online surveys (February-April 2025) using three validated instruments: a demographic questionnaire, a climate change awareness scale adapted from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) materials and integrated with Indonesian educational standards, and the Climate Change Anxiety Scale Short Form (CCAS-S Instrument reliability testing ).yielded Cronbach's alpha values of 0.60 for the awareness scale and 0.90 for the CCAS-S. Statistical analysis using descriptive methods and the Chi-square test revealed a significant positive correlation between climate change awareness and anxiety levels (p<0.05).   Result: The heightened climate change awareness may potentially increase anxiety among adolescents.   Conclusion: Developing comprehensive school health-based interactive education promotion programs emphasizing climate adaptation and mitigation strategies through multisectoral collaboration.   Keywords: adolescents health; awareness; climate change; climate anxiety.

Abstract

Introduction: The postpartum period is a critical transition marked by physical, psychological, and social changes requiring mothers, particularly first-time mothers, to adapt to new maternal roles. Successful adaptation is influenced by factors such as coping strategies, self-efficacy, awareness, family support, healthcare provision, cultural norms, and relevant laws or regulations. This study examined the impact of a structured health education intervention on knowledge of factors influencing postpartum adaptation among primiparous mothers in Zaria Metropolis, Kaduna State, Nigeria.   Method: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design with pretest and posttest was employed between October 2021 and April 2022. A total of 130 primiparous mothers were recruited using multistage sampling. The intervention group received a 40-minute structured health education session, while the control group received routine care. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing knowledge of factors influencing postpartum adaptation. Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and McNemar’s chi-square test at p ≤ 0.05. Percentage change (Δ%) was used to estimate effect size.   Result: Baseline differences were observed in age (p = 0.003) and education (p = 0.001), while other variables were comparable. The intervention group showed significant improvements across all factors (p < 0.001), with increases ranging from +3.5% to +66.5%. Notable gains were observed in knowledge of healthcare provider support (+40.8%) and laws/regulations (+66.5%). In contrast, the control group showed inconsistent changes, including declines in coping strategies (−16.7%) and personality traits (−11.8%), with no improvement in self-efficacy and legal knowledge. Overall, the intervention group demonstrated markedly greater improvement.   Conclusion: Structured postnatal education significantly improves mothers’ knowledge of factors influencing postpartum adaptation.   Keywords: factors; impact; postnatal education; postpartum adaptation; primiparous mothers
