Abstract

Pronunciation has regained its existence in the investigative attempts in the areas of TESOL, Sociolinguistics, and Intercultural Communication. This burgeoning growth has proven the importance of pronunciation teaching and learning, notable in this technology-based language learning era. However, little attention has been given to the description of how the participant learned English pronunciation through internet-based video lessons (IBVL). Hence, this study addressed the void. Avril (a senior high school student in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia) was recruited as the investigative participant. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed with Thematic Analysis. The findings reported that she learned English pronunciation by imitating the English tutor of the MmmEnglish channel. She learned by applying three main stages, namely listening and reading, listening and repeating, and shadowing.

Abstract

This study is a qualitative descriptive research that focuses on integrating Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) into the teaching of English in elementary schools in Indonesia. The research methodology includes interviews with teachers, classroom observations, and analysis of curriculum documents. The aim is to explore the challenges, experiences, and perceptions of implementing IBL approaches. It highlights the potential benefits of IBL, such as increased student engagement and language proficiency, but also identifies challenges, such as limited resources and varying levels of teacher readiness. The research emphasizes the importance of addressing these challenges while leveraging the potential benefits of IBL to create enriching learning experiences for students. The study's practical implications are discussed, focusing on enhancing English instruction practices in elementary schools. It emphasizes the need for comprehensive professional development, supportive classroom environments, and curriculum alignment. Abstract

This research examines the impact of curricular alignment on student performance in final exams. This research evaluates how much the match between the curriculum and the final exam influences student achievement. This research design uses a quantitative approach with 50 samples of grade-eleventh students at MA Mu’allimin NWDI Pancor, who follow an aligned and non-aligned curriculum. Data was collected through final exams and student perception surveys. Data analysis shows that students who follow an aligned curriculum obtain higher test scores compared to students who do not follow an aligned curriculum. The data collection revealed that the highest score was 78 and the lowest was 63. Out of the 25 pupils, 15 scored above 68, with an average score 68.6. Good curriculum alignment has been found to have a positive effect on exam scores. The majority of students’ assessed that the material taught was appropriate to the exam format and helped them understand the concept being tested. This research shows that curriculum alignment plays an important role in improving student performance on final exams, and is relevant in efforts to improve the overall quality of education.

Abstract

Language variation defined as a language use according the users, which differs based on the topic being discussed, the relationship between the speaker, the interlocutor, as well as the media of communication. This research focus on language variation used by the EFL students on social media. This research aimed to investigate the variation of language on social media specifically on Instagram and Facebook used by the EFL students. The design of this research was a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection was gained from observation, and documentation. The validity of the data used in this study was triangulation of sources, methods, and theory. The data analysis was gained by using Miles and Huberman theories. The result showed that there are some language variation used by the students on social media in term of dialect, colloquial language, gender, code, slang, code switching, and code mixing. The students are commonly applying a variety of unexpected language variations in the forms of acronyms, familiar phrases, and the use of local languages (sumbawanese) combined with the national language, English, even Arabic. Some might use English creatively, while others may struggle with grammar or vocabulary, leading to unique forms of expression that blend their English skills with local linguistic patterns. In addition, the EFL students use a wide range of languages on social media platforms especially Facebook and Instagram. Thus, the occurrence of language diversity is not only caused by non homogeneous speakers but also caused by the wide range of social interactions the speaker engage in.

Abstract

A key component of learning a language is listening, which is necessary for the growth of receptive and productive language skills. Extensive Listening (EL), which involves engaging with a wide range of audio materials in the target language, has emerged as a significant pedagogical tool for enhancing listening skills. This study investigates the effectiveness of EL in improving language proficiency through a 13-week program involving three undergraduate students in an English language course. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the study explores students' perceptions of the benefits, challenges, and overall impact of EL on their English language skills. The findings indicate that students perceive EL as beneficial for vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and listening comprehension. However, challenges such as difficulties in finding relevant content and understanding diverse accents were also identified. The study provides valuable insights into optimizing EL programs, emphasizing the need for curated content and structured syllabi to better support learners. These results contribute to the existing literature on EL by highlighting its role in language learning and offering practical recommendations for educators to enhance instructional practices. The study underscores the importance of fostering an effective learning environment tailored to the needs and preferences of language learners. Future research is suggested to see the influence of various listening materials, the effectiveness of certain techniques, and to examine the long-term impact of EL across a broader learner demographic to further validate its effectiveness as a language acquisition tool.
