Abstract

Due to English's global significance, it indirectly affects Indonesia's education system. In this area of study, most scholarly publications speak English. All Indonesian nationals are required by law to take English classes. Many students have trouble understanding the grammatical rules of English because they are so different from those of their native language, Indonesian. The most important distinctions are those of tense and aspect. Many students struggle with grammar because of this. This analysis aims to determine which tenses and aspects are used in the script for "Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," and which are employed most often. This research makes use of content analysis and qualitative descriptive methods. Data collection made use of record-keeping. The data was examined using the Miles and Huberman dynamic model. After the data has been compiled and presented, inferences can be made. The data shows that there are nine distinct permutations of tense and aspect. There are 33 current tenses, 37 past tenses, 6 future tenses, 35 progressive tenses, 3 past progressive tenses, 3 perfect tenses, 1 perfect tenses, 2 future perfect tenses, and 2 present perfect tenses. The present progressive is only represented by 35 occurrences, while the plain past tense is represented by 37. There are twelve permutations of tense and aspect, nine of which are used here. There is no distinction between past and future occurrences in the progressive tenses (future, past, and future perfect).

Abstract

A key component of learning a language is listening, which is necessary for the growth of receptive and productive language skills. Extensive Listening (EL), which involves engaging with a wide range of audio materials in the target language, has emerged as a significant pedagogical tool for enhancing listening skills. This study investigates the effectiveness of EL in improving language proficiency through a 13-week program involving three undergraduate students in an English language course. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the study explores students' perceptions of the benefits, challenges, and overall impact of EL on their English language skills. The findings indicate that students perceive EL as beneficial for vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and listening comprehension. However, challenges such as difficulties in finding relevant content and understanding diverse accents were also identified. The study provides valuable insights into optimizing EL programs, emphasizing the need for curated content and structured syllabi to better support learners. These results contribute to the existing literature on EL by highlighting its role in language learning and offering practical recommendations for educators to enhance instructional practices. The study underscores the importance of fostering an effective learning environment tailored to the needs and preferences of language learners. Future research is suggested to see the influence of various listening materials, the effectiveness of certain techniques, and to examine the long-term impact of EL across a broader learner demographic to further validate its effectiveness as a language acquisition tool.

Abstract

This research investigated the representation of Rohingya refugees stranded in Aceh province in the Indonesian news media during the four-year crisis between 2020 and 2023. The study aimed to examine how Rohingya refugees were represented in the media during the crisis using the Critical Discourse Analysis and the Discourse Historical Approach (DHA). The research employed a mixed method analysis to analyse the corpus data of 46,769 words extracted from 62 news articles published in two mainstream Indonesian publications, namely the regional Serambi Indonesia and the national Jakarta Post, between June 24, 2020, and March 27, 2023. Using corpus linguistics and Van Dijks CDA, the research uncovered four prominent argumentation strategies used in the media to portray the refugee crisis. Serambi Indonesia and the Jakarta Post utilised the Humanitarianism and Administration argumentation the most, concentrating on precarious conditions and efforts to handle the influx of refugees. Nevertheless, the local daily Serambi Indonesia used some Threat/Danger argumentation, portraying refugees as dangers and threats to local safety. The study further reveals how the medias alignment with the government agenda is decisive for the press to construct public narratives. The narrative is expected to influence peoples attitudes and behaviours toward refugees in the province of Aceh.
