Abstract

Moving to a new environment with a different cultural background often leads to the phenomenon of culture shock, particularly among migrant students who leave their hometowns to pursue higher education. Students from outside Aceh who study at IAIN Langsa face adaptation challenges within a social and cultural environment strongly influenced by Islamic law and local traditions. The mismatch between their initial expectations and the realities they encounter often triggers psychological and social reactions such as confusion, stress, and social isolation. This study aims to explore the dynamics of culture shock and the process of identity negotiation experienced by migrant students during their adaptation to the academic and social environment at IAIN Langsa. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, the study focuses on understanding the participants’ subjective experiences, with data collected through in-depth interviews involving eight purposively selected migrant students. The findings reveal that common forms of culture shock include differences in language, food, dress codes, and social interaction patterns shaped by strong religious norms. Over time, students overcome these challenges through identity negotiation by adjusting their appearance, communication style, and social behavior while constructing hybrid identities through maintaining relationships within fellow migrant communities, building cross-cultural friendships, and reinforcing their Islamic values as a means of integration. The study highlights the importance of institutional support for migrant students in their process of cultural adaptation and emphasizes the need for intercultural engagement programs on campus to foster a more inclusive and harmonious academic environment.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited in-depth research on the symbolic meanings embedded in the architecture of the Towani Tolotang traditional house. Therefore, this research aims to reveal the meanings contained in the architectural elements and ornaments of the traditional house. The study employs Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory as the analytical framework, using a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach. Informants were selected through purposive sampling and consisted of three individuals knowledgeable about Towani Tolotang traditions. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings show that the Towani Tolotang traditional house, particularly the homes of traditional leaders (Uwa’), contains strong symbolic meanings in each of its architectural features. The three-tiered stilt-house structure represents Bugis mythological concepts; the round or twelve-sided pillars symbolize the steadfastness of Tolotang ideology; the bamboo flooring ensures smooth air circulation; the odd number of steps is believed to bring good fortune to the homeowner; the tamping reflects respect toward the Uwa’ as traditional leaders; the white color signifies purity; the use of wood for doors and windows embodies respect for nature; and the carvings symbolize hopes for a prosperous life. These findings imply that the Towani Tolotang traditional house functions not only as a physical dwelling but also as a medium for preserving the spiritual, cultural, and philosophical values of the Tolotang community, highlighting the importance of safeguarding and introducing it as part of local cultural heritage preservation efforts.

Abstract

This study explores how policy advocacy campaigns delivered through TikTok shape the awareness and attitudes of Generation Z in Palangka Raya City. Although the platform has rapidly become a prominent channel for public information, academic research has not sufficiently examined how persuasive policy messages spread among young audiences within an environment driven by personalized digital algorithms. To address this gap, the study adopts the Diffusion of Innovation framework to understand how exposure to policy-oriented content influences the cognitive and attitudinal responses of TikTok users from Generation Z. Using a quantitative approach, the research engaged a group of respondents selected purposively from the local TikTok user population. Data were obtained through an online questionnaire that captured perceptions and behavioral tendencies, and the results were analyzed using a statistical model appropriate for measuring directional influence. The findings indicate that policy advocacy content on TikTok plays a meaningful role in enhancing both awareness and attitudes among young users in the city. These results demonstrate that the Diffusion of Innovation framework remains relevant for understanding message dissemination in contemporary digital media contexts. Moreover, the study shows that TikTok functions not only as an entertainment platform but also as an effective medium for government communication aimed at younger audiences. The research contributes to the field of digital policy communication by emphasizing the significance of platform-specific content dynamics and provides practical insights for policymakers seeking to improve engagement and understanding among Generation Z in an increasingly digital public sphere.

Abstract

Social relations in the tobacco industry demonstrate an unequal relationship between farmers and other actors in the production and distribution chain. Farmers, as primary producers, are often in a weak position in determining prices and market access, thus relying on intermediaries such as middlemen and cigarette companies. This study aims to describe and analyze the social relations of tobacco farmers within the tobacco industry system using Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical perspective. This study employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. Informants were selected through purposive sampling involving six informants: four tobacco farmers and two intermediary actors in tobacco product distribution. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation. The obtained data were analyzed qualitatively through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that social relations in the tobacco industry form a structure that tends to benefit downstream actors. Middlemen and cigarette companies have stronger access to economic capital and marketing networks, thus playing a dominant role in determining prices and quality standards. Meanwhile, farmers have limited capital and access to information, leading to dependence on middlemen. This condition shapes a pattern of economic practices among farmers that tends to accept market prices without a balanced bargaining process. The discussion of this research confirms that social relations in the tobacco industry are not only influenced by market mechanisms, but also by social structures that reproduce the unequal position of farmers.

Abstract

TikTok has developed into a digital platform that functions not only as a source of entertainment but also as a medium for socio-cultural expression and social critique among students at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta. This study aims to examine how students use TikTok as a participatory space to convey ideas, values, and perspectives on social issues through creative content. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, content observation, and documentation of student creators actively producing videos on social, cultural, and critical themes. The findings reveal that TikTok serves as a platform for identity expression, reflective communication, and collaborative media, blending religious values, popular culture, and student intellectualism. Through short informative and satirical videos, students articulate their perspectives on campus issues, morality, and social realities in a creative and respectful manner. TikTok also promotes a new communication culture grounded in digital creativity, media literacy, and social engagement. Theoretically, this research contributes to the study of digital communication among Islamic students, while practically, it offers recommendations for universities to enhance digital literacy and media ethics in the contemporary technological era.

Abstract

The development of digital communication has encouraged companies to adapt in order to build public image and trust through more effective and valuable communication strategies. PT Inovasi Teknologi Solusindo (Trustmedis), which provides health technology based on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, uses a digital communication strategy in the form of copywriting to strengthen its brand image as one that is trustworthy, informative, and empathetic. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method by analyzing Trustmedis' digital content on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube platforms, as well as data on audience performance from Meta Business Suite. The analysis was conducted using the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) model to determine the extent to which persuasive messages are able to build emotional connections and encourage action from the audience. The results show that the application of copywriting principles successfully increased audience engagement through consistent, empathetic, and contextually appropriate messages. Empirical data showed a significant increase in interaction indicators (377.5%), link clicks (288%), reach (66.8%), and views (67.7%), demonstrating the success of Trustmedis' digital communication strategy. Theoretically, this research provides further insight into digital communication in the field of health technology, emphasizing that copywriting is not only a promotional tool but also a way to establish public value and trust in building a sustainable digital brand image.

Abstract

Islam, which fundamentally promotes unity and tolerance, has historically accommodated a plurality of Islamic jurisprudential schools (mazhab) formed through scholarly legal reasoning (ijtihad). However, contemporary Muslim societies increasingly experience school-based fanaticism, manifested in rigid allegiance to a particular school of thought and the delegitimization of alternative interpretations. Despite its prevalence, this phenomenon remains insufficiently examined within the framework of contemporary Islamic jurisprudence. This study aims to conceptualize school-based fanaticism and to analyze its dimensions, characteristics, underlying causes, and socio-religious impacts. Employing a qualitative library-based research design, this study systematically examines classical and contemporary Islamic legal sources using a comparative and analytical approach. The findings demonstrate that school-based fanaticism operates at both individual and collective levels and is characterized by epistemic rigidity, absolutist truth claims, and tendencies toward social fragmentation. The study identifies several contributing factors, including limited engagement with authoritative Islamic scholarship, the amplifying role of unregulated digital media, and political instrumentalization of jurisprudential differences. While its impacts are predominantly negative—such as heightened sectarian tension and weakened communal cohesion—this study also acknowledges a constructive potential when school adherence is grounded in ethical scholarship and intellectual discipline. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of strengthening religious literacy, promoting jurisprudential moderation (wasatiyyah), and fostering respect for interpretive diversity as strategic responses to school-based fanaticism in contemporary Islamic societies.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of Kaboro Weki in wedding ceremonies in Parado District, Bima Regency, with a focus on the da’wah messages embedded in the tradition. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method using a sociological approach and a cultural da’wah perspective. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving community leaders, religious figures, and local residents. The findings indicate that the Kaboro Weki procession in wedding ceremonies consists of several stages: (1) kahaba angi, namely conveying information and messages to the extended family; (2) doho kaboro, a deliberative gathering to discuss shortcomings and preparations for the wedding; (3) kahaba ra hukum la’o sara, the delivery of marriage information to village authorities and the wider community; (4) doho sara, a deliberative meeting involving the government and the community; and (5) the implementation of the agreed wedding activities. Furthermore, the da’wah messages contained in the Kaboro Weki tradition include values of conveying good news, mutual respect, honesty, commitment, brotherhood, charity, mutual assistance, and deliberation. These values demonstrate that Kaboro Weki functions not only as a cultural tradition but also as an effective medium of cultural da’wah in strengthening social harmony and religious values within the community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of social media use on the form, intensity, and effectiveness of da'wah activities among students. Da'wah in Islam refers to the effort to convey religious teachings to individuals or groups so that they can understand, feel, and apply these teachings in their lives. This study aims to examine the impact of social media use on the continuity of Islamic da'wah among students, especially when faced with the advancement of digital entertainment today. In addition, this study aims to explore the function of social media as a tool for da'wah, identify emerging opportunities and obstacles, and discuss changes in the way students receive and participate in Islamic da'wah activities in the digital age. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative type, which aims to analyze the impact of social media on the continuity of da'wah in the student environment. A qualitative approach was chosen because this study focuses on in-depth investigation based on the research subject. Data and information were collected directly from the source to analyze the impact of social media on the sustainability of da'wah among students. The results of the study show that social media has changed the pattern of da'wah among students, both in terms of form and how it is received. Based on interviews, most students believe that da'wah through social media has the potential to have a negative impact if not managed properly, such as the emergence of misunderstandings, superficial messaging, and a tendency to consume religious content instantly. However, social media still has great potential as an effective means of da'wah if used appropriately and responsibly. These findings contribute to contemporary da'wah studies by emphasizing the importance of more critical and targeted management of digital da'wah. Practically, this research implies the need to formulate a more educational, reflective, and student-centered model of social media-based da'wah in the digital age.
