Abstract

This study is motivated by the transformation of ferry transportation services from a manual system to a digital platform through the Ferizy application, which has generated various responses and challenges among users. The main problem of this research lies in the intergenerational gap in digital cultural adaptation and the technical constraints that affect the effectiveness of application usage. This study aims to analyze the process of community digital cultural adaptation in using the Ferizy application for the Ulee Lheue–Balohan ferry service. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through interviews with 15 informants selected purposively, consisting of different generational groups as well as port officers as supporting informants. The findings indicate that levels of knowledge, adaptation processes, and challenges in using the Ferizy application vary across generations. The younger generation tends to adapt more quickly to digital technology, while the older generation faces difficulties, particularly in digital literacy and the use of application-based systems. In addition, technical issues such as network disruptions and system errors also affect service effectiveness. The study implies that the success of digital service transformation depends not only on technological availability but also on social readiness and the level of digital literacy within the community. Therefore, improvements in digital education and infrastructure support are essential to ensure equitable access and optimal use of the service.

Abstract

Previous studies on religious moderation in Islamic boarding schools largely focus on policy and curriculum, rarely examining how teachers construct Islamic communication to shape students' attitudes across cognitive, affective, and conative domains. This study aims to analyze the construction of Islamic communication by teachers as a strategy for shaping students' religious moderation attitudes at Madrasah Ulumul Qur'an Langsa, focusing on the communication process, the values conveyed, and its supporting and inhibiting factors. Using a qualitative case study method, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that teachers construct communication strategies through direct role-modeling (uswatun hasanah), personal dialogue, curriculum integration, and the application of Islamic communication principles (qaulan sadida, qaulan baligha, qaulan layyina). These strategies successfully foster tolerance, national commitment, anti-violence, and local cultural accommodation among students. Supporting factors include a conducive environment, teacher exemplary behavior, and an integrated curriculum, whereas inhibiting factors involve social media influence and diverse student backgrounds. This study contributes to Islamic communication literature by introducing communication construction as a strategic process for meaning-making and internalizing religious moderation values within a madrasah environment.

Abstract

Public accountability has become a key concern in the digital era as governments increasingly rely on digital platforms to improve transparency, responsiveness, and citizen participation in public service delivery. In Indonesia, SP4N-LAPOR! functions as the national online public complaint system that connects citizens with government institutions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of SP4N-LAPOR! in promoting public accountability at the Aceh Tamiang Department of Communication, Informatics, and Encryption (Diskominfo). Guided by Mark Bovens’ Public Accountability Theory, the study examines the platform’s role as an accountability mechanism and identifies the institutional challenges affecting complaint management. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically to relate the empirical findings to public accountability theory and the broader digital governance literature. The findings indicate that SP4N-LAPOR! has improved institutional accountability by providing citizens with an accessible channel to submit complaints, aspirations, and requests for public information. However, its effectiveness remains limited by delayed responses from liaison agencies, weak inter-agency coordination, insufficient public outreach, low digital literacy among some citizens, and occasional network disruptions. These findings demonstrate that the effectiveness of digital complaint platforms depends not only on technological infrastructure but also on institutional responsiveness, coordination, and organizational commitment. This study contributes to the digital governance literature by extending the evaluation of e-government initiatives beyond technical performance and emphasizing public accountability as a critical indicator of effective digital public service delivery.

Abstract

The sandwich generation phenomenon, in which individuals are responsible for supporting multiple generations within the family simultaneously, has become an increasingly significant social issue due to its economic, emotional, and psychological consequences. Despite its growing prevalence, this phenomenon has received limited attention in studies examining its representation in film. This study aims to analyze how the sandwich generation is represented in the film 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan through Roland Barthes' semiotic framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative method within a post-positivist paradigm, the research analyzes selected scenes, dialogues, characters' expressions, settings, and visual symbols using Barthes' three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings demonstrate that the film portrays the sandwich generation not only as a financial responsibility but also as a complex experience involving caregiving duties, personal sacrifice, emotional conflict, psychological pressure, and the tension between family obligations and individual aspirations. At the mythological level, the film reinforces the cultural belief that the eldest child or the family member perceived as the most capable bears a moral responsibility to prioritize family welfare over personal ambitions. These findings suggest that 1 Kakak 7 Ponakan functions not merely as a reflection of social reality but also as a medium that constructs and legitimizes cultural values of sacrifice, responsibility, and family solidarity, thereby contributing to broader discussions on family roles and the social meaning of the sandwich generation.

Abstract

Public awareness is essential for the sustainability of non-profit organizations, yet many still rely on informational communication that fails to create meaningful public engagement. This study examines how the Grandma Foundation employs corporate storytelling to enhance public awareness through digital communication. A qualitative case study approach was adopted, with data collected through in-depth interviews, observation, Instagram content analysis, and documentation. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings indicate that before implementing storytelling, the Foundation's communication was predominantly descriptive and founder-centered, resulting in limited audience awareness and engagement. The adoption of serialized storytelling, particularly through the Jejak Baik campaign, enabled the organization to communicate authentic humanitarian experiences that strengthened audience attention, emotional connection, and trust. These findings are consistent with the perspectives of emotional branding and Uses and Gratifications theory, suggesting that authentic narratives are more effective than conventional promotional content in building organizational visibility. However, storytelling has not yet fully translated awareness into concrete public participation because explicit call-to-action elements and interactive audience engagement remain limited. This study concludes that corporate storytelling is an effective strategic communication approach for strengthening public awareness in the non-profit sector. The findings imply that storytelling should be integrated with persuasive call-to-action strategies and more dialogic digital engagement to convert audience awareness into sustained participation, volunteer involvement, and donor support. The study also contributes to the literature on strategic communication by demonstrating how authentic storytelling can strengthen the effectiveness of digital communication for non-profit organizations.
