Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluated some organic materials to improve the characteristics of post-mining tin sand tailings and its effect on the growth of rubber ttree. The experiment was conducted at PT Koba Tin nursery Central Bangka District during 5 months. The study was designed according to a factorial randomized completely design with two factors and three replications. The first factor was the type of organic matter ameliorant (chicken manure, oil palm empty fruit bunches compost, and municipal solid waste compost), and the second factor was the proportion of sand tailings, top soil and organic materials (2:1: 1 and 2:1:2, v/v). The results showed that growth of rubber seedlings in sand tailings media derived from tin-postmining which is ameliorated by top soil and organic materials is still lower than growth on unmined land media. The growth of rubber tree seedlings on media with two proportion of sand tailings, one proportion top soil and two proportion of empty fruit bunches compost ( 2:1:2, v/v) two better than other combinations.  Key words: amelioration, manure, compost, rubber tree, sand tailings

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine the optimum storage condition (temperature and relative humidity) during 10 weeks with interval 2 weeks to maintain the seed viability and vigor. The variables were seed moisture content, gemination percentage, speed of germination, index of vigor, time to reach 50% germination, and electrolyte leachates. The research used split plot experi-mental design, with storage condition (AC and room temperature) as the main plot and storage period (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks) as the subplot. The results showed seed stored at 90% relative humidity (using saturated KCl) and 19-200C temperature for 2 weeks storage periods significantly decrease in germination percentage (66.67%), speed of germination (64.56%), index of vigor (40.00%) and increased in time to reach 50% ger-mination (12.25 days) compared to the control, with germination percentage (94.67%), speed of germination (91.97%), index of vigor (49.33%), and time to reach 50% germination (11.25 days). Seed stored at 90% rela-tive humidity (using saturated KCl) and 27-280C temperature for 2 weeks storage periods showed significant decrease in germination percentage (36.00%), speed of germination (33.21%), index of vigor (21.33%), and increase in time to reach 50% germination (13.41 days) and electrolyte leachates (42.99 μScm-1g-1) as com-pared to untreated with 89.33% germination, 87.98% speed of germination, 49.33% index vigor, time to reach 50% germination (11.75 days), and electrolyte leachates (36.16 μScm-1g-1). Storage condition using saturated NaCl at 19-200C (AC) or 27-280C (ambient) with 80% RH and 75% RH, respectively, showed decrease in ger-mination compared to using saturated KCl at the same storage temperature. At 4 and 6 weeks storage periods at AC or ambient temperature showed declining in viability and vigor. Total loss of viability and vigor occured at 8 and 10 weeks storage. The seeds can be stored at 90% RH (using saturated KCl) and low temperature (AC) for up to 2 weeks; after that period, viability and vigor declined. Key words: storage condition, strorage period, seed viability, and vigor

Abstract

Dendrobium is great interest because of its high value as a floricultural commodity and a kind of elite herbage plant in Indonesia. An efficient in vitro propagation system via protocorm-like body (PLBs) induction has been developed using one-year-old axillary node explants. The potential of different media and supplements triptone for reliable Dendrobium orchid plantlet regeneration from in vitro PLBs explants were studied. In all two media under investigation, shoot regeneration was achieved when the PLBs were transferred onto solidified MS half strenght and Growmore medium with or without 2 g L-1 triptone supplemented with 15% (v/v) coconut water, 20 g L-1 sucrose, and 2 g L-1 charcoal. The shoots development investigation after three month of culture. 1/2 MS and Growmore media significantly influenced the plantlet regeneration of Dendrobium orchid. Among the media, Growmore showed better performance on shoots and leaves per plantlet, but triptone showed no significant effect on number shoots and leaves. The longest shoots were found in Growmore medium without triptone. Key words: Dendrobium, in vitro, PLBs, planlet, triptone.

Abstract

The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate effectiveness of Gamma ray to somatic embryos culture to increase frequency of obtaining polyethylene glycol (PEG) insensitive somatic embryos (SE) of cv. Local Bima peanut. The experiment was inisiated with induction of peanut SE. Mutation induction was done on SE culture. Somatic embryos that have been irradiated with Gamma ray were selected in medium containing polyethylene glykol 15% (PEG 6000). Results of the experiment achieved, namely: 1) Gamma ray dosage affected peanut SE growth. Higher Gamma ray dosage used, it was more inhibited peanut SEs growth. Use of IS Gy dosage gave SEs growth better than up dosage, 2) embriogenic calli irradiated with Gamma ray dosage 15 and 20 Gy showed high SE proliferation, high number of SE per explant, high SE total when selected in medium containing PEG 15%, and lower SE growth occured on SE calli without irrardion and dosage 25 Gy.  Key words: Mutation, Gamma ray

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate response of inoculating vasicular arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) fungi and K fertilizing on Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) growth and yield. The study was conducted at Plumbon Research Station during July – September 2009 using Anjasmoro cultivar. The experiment used completely randomized block design with 2 factors and 2 replications. The first factor was dosage of VAM, i.e. 0, 5, 10, and 15 g per planting hole. The second factor was dosage of KCl fertilizer i.e. 0, 30, 60, 90 kg ha-1. The results showed an interaction between the dosage of VAM inoculation and KCl fertilizing on root length and weight of 100 seeds. Inoculating VMA 15 g per planting hole without K fertilizing, and no inoculation of VMA but with high dosage of K fertilizer both gave highest yield of soybean of 1.33 kg per harvested plot equivalent to 1.77 ton ha-1. Key words: VAM, K dosage, soybean, yield.

Abstract

Shade trees of legume in par-ticular have ecological function such as litter fall production, N fixation, nutrient acquisition from deep soil, and shade provision. Shade trees may influence coffee bean yield both increasing and decreasing the yield. To evaluate the role of shade trees in determining coffee yield, the experimental plots were constructed at benchmark site of Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-Ground Biodiversity (CSM-BGBD), in Sumberjaya Subdistrict, West Lampung, Indonesia. Shade trees of Coffea canephora agro-ecosystems to be examined were Gliricidae sepium, Erythrina sububrams, Michelia champaca, and no shade. The results showed that agro-ecosystem shaded with Gliricidae sepium, Erythrina sububrams, Michelia champaca gave positive return of N, P, K. Total N from litter fall of shade trees and level of shading had quadratic regression with coffee yield. Shading on July significantly determined coffee yield with negative coefficient. Key words: shade tree, coffee yield, litter fall, level of shading
