Abstract

Storing seeds always causes deterioration, mainly due to the long storage time and rapid aging treatment using ethanol. This study aimed to compare the viability of soybean seeds due to the natural storage period and due to accelerated aging with ethanol. The lot of Argomulyo soybean seeds was divided into five subloties. Sublot-1 was the soybean seeds given a natural storage under temperature of ± 26 ºC for 12 months. Sublot-2 was the soybean seeds given a natural storage under temperature of ± 18 ºC for 12 months. Sublot-3 was the soybean seeds applicated with the treatments of the absorption period 0-12 hours to ethanol solution of 8 % (LPLE8). Sublot-4 was soybean seeds applicated with the treatments of the exposure periods 0-180 minutes to saturated ethanol 96% vapour (LDUJE). Sublot-5 was soybean seeds applicated with the treatments of imbibition periods 0-24 hours prior to be exposured on saturated 96% ethanol vapour for 40 minutes (LIPPC).  The main variable observed was the percentage of normal seedlings (PKN). The rate of decline in the viability of soybean seeds during storage of 0-12 months under the storage room temperature of 26 C or 18 C respectively a) was greater than that treated with ethanol-8% absorption period of 0-12 hours, and b) did not differ from those treated with 96% 0-180 minutes ethanol saturated vapor treatment period and treated with 0-24 hour imbibition period before exposure to 96% ethanol saturated vapor for 40 minutes. Keywords: Aging, ethanol, normal seedling, seed viability, storage

Abstract

Study on the effect of rainfall pattern on the coffee yield has been carried out at one of government-owned estate companies in Banyuwangi district, East Java. The study was conducted by multiple linier regression analysis approach of rainfall elements on the coffee production. The results showed the following figures. Rainfall pattern significantly affected the production of the coffee plants. In general, it was shown that the effect of rainfall pattern on the coffee production with statistical analysis approach of multiple linier regression of the study showed that the following rainfall elements, i.e. wet months, rainfall of the previous year, and dry months of the previous year, would always appear as the dominant factors determining the production of the coffee plants, in the blocks of plants (each block of plants has its own or the same planting year) as well as in afdeling (the blocks as a whole or a unite), in which the study was carried out (as a note, a plantation or estate company usually has some afdelings). Each element of rainfall tended to have similar direction or regression coefficient vector in every assessment, but different magnitude supposed to be the effect of local conditions of the land. The equations performed from the multiple linier regression analysis have precision to predict ranging from 86-91%.Keywords: Rainfall pattern, wet months, dry months, coffee production.

Abstract

Orchid such as Dendrobium is more commonly propagated in vitro by using tis-sue culture techniques. In tissue culture, the type and composition of media and plant growth regulator was very crucial. The research was aimed to study the effect of media and plant growth regulator on growth of Dendrobium seedlings in vitro and was conducted in Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung, from April 2010 until October 2010. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with three replicates. Treatments were arranged as 2 x 3 factorial design with media (½ MS and modified ½ MS with high P and low N) as the first factor and three concentrations of benzyl-adenine (0, 5, and 10 mg/l) as the second factor. Each experimental unit consisted of 3 culture bottles each of which containing 2 five-month-old seedlings. The result showed that both media was not significantly affected the growth of Dendrobium seedlings. Whereas, the addition of benzyl-adenine (BA) at 5 mg/l and 10 mg/l in both of media was able to increase shoot number from 2.8 to 5.2-5.4 and increase leave number from 9.2 to 18.0-18.2. Overall, the application of benzyl-adenine decreased shoot height (from 3.7 to 3.0-2.7 cm), root number (from 2.7 to 1.3-0.8), and root length (from 1.6 to 1.0-0.8 cm). Keyword : Dendrobium in vitro, seedlings growth.

Abstract

Biological agents is believed to function as fitostimulators, biofertilizers, and biopesticides. These capabilities have been widely reported by researchers on various crops. Application these agents to rice plants had not been widely reported, particu-larly in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of seed treatment with rhizobacteria and use of fertilizer P on plant growth, seed quality in the field. The study experiments that were conducted in Research Station of Indonesian Rice Research Institue, Sukamandi, West Java. The experimental results show that P fertilizer application at the rate of 50 kg ha-1 produced plant height, number of tillers, number of pithy grains, and total number of grains per panicle better than that 100 kg ha-1.. Seed treatments by immersion in a mixture of P. diminuta A6 + B. subtilis 5/B) with or without matriconditioning increased plant height and num-ber of tillers. Seed treatment with matriconditioning + biological agents increased the number of grains and total number of grains. All the seed treatments and P fertilizer applications no significantly affected the physi-ological quality of seed yield, but reduced population of Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae (Xoo) in the seeds. Keywords: bactericide, biofertilizer, biopesticide, seed patologis quality

Abstract

Host plant and medium are factors that affecting Abusrcular Mycorrhiza Fungi (AMF) production. Therefore, for maximum FMA inoculums production, four different host (mays, sorghum, Centrosema pubescens [CP], and Calopogonium mucunoides [CM]) and two medium (zeolit P-1 and zeolit P-3) were tested. The results showed that host from graminae (mays and sorghum) are better for AMF inoculums production as they gived higher root infection and spore production compared to legume (CP and CM). No significant effect was detected between P-1 and P-3, hence both medium can be used for AMF production. Furthermore, data obtained also showed that the effect of host on AMF production was not affected by medium used. Key words: Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi, inoculums production, host, medium

Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Fungi (AMF) to make a symbiosis with physic nuts under drought stress condition. The experiment was carried out in plastic house in Kota Palu, Central Sulawesi, from October 2008 to January 2009. The experiment used completely randomized block design with 3 factors and 3 replications. The first factor was AMF type i.e. without AMF, AMF Glomus sp-1p, AMF Acaulospora sp-1p, and mixture of Glomus sp-1p and Acaulospora sp-1p. The second factor was the provenances of physic nut i.e. Palu, NTB, IP-1A, and IP-1P. The third factor was soil water content i.e. 80 and 40% of field capacity. The results showed that the application of AMF resulted in better growth of all provenances especially ecotype IP-1P, which was sensitive to drought, compared to control (without AMF). At 40% field capacity, mixture of Glomus sp-1p and Acaulospora sp-1p. was more effective compared to single AMF in improving plant growth. The highest AMF infection was found in ecotype Palu inoculated with mixture of Glomus sp-1p and Acaulospora sp-1p. Key words: infection level, Glomus, Acaulospora

Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the effects of IBA concentration on the growth of pineapple seedlings sprout from crown cutting on each applications method. The treatment was arranged in factorial (5x2) in ran-domized block design with three replications. The first factor is the concentration of IBA (0 ppm,100 ppm,200 ppm,400 ppm and 600 ppm). The second factor is the application method of IBA (spraying method and basting method). The results showed that the concentration of 400 ppm IBA effect on leaf width, plant wet weight, and number of primary roots. Treatment of IBA application by basting method of the primary root number more than spraying method. The interaction between concentration and applications method of IBA had no effect on all observed variabels. This study were obtained that the concentration of IBA 400 ppm gives the best growth, Treatment of IBA application by basting method to increase the number of primary roots, but the influence concentration of IBA on the growth of seedlings of pineapple seedling from crown cutting is not determined by applications method of IBA. Key words: Pineapple Seedling, Crown Cutting, IBA
