Abstract

While everyone makes mistakes, only the wise are able to learn from them. The purpose of this study was to examine the errors students make when attempting to complete non-routine tasks. Kastolan's theory, which encompasses conceptual, procedural, and technological errors, served as the basis for the error analysis. Students from a prestigious public school in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, located on the eastern tip of Java, participated in this qualitative study. The selected participants were 26 students from class 2A. Data were collected through a written test given to students. The test consisted of five essay questions that had to be answered in two 30-minute sessions. The results were then evaluated. The findings showed conceptual, procedural, and technical errors. This study revealed that conceptual mastery was the main error found in students' answers. Further studies are expected to reduce numerical errors among students.

Abstract

At the upper primary level, mathematics becomes more abstract and can be particularly difficult for students, especially when learning integers. Teachers, therefore, need effective media to support students’ conceptual understanding. One such medium is the use of e-comics that integrate real-life contexts through the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach and are supported by deep-learning principles to promote deeper understanding. This study explores teachers’ and students’ responses to the use of RME- and deep-learning-based e-comics in classroom learning and examines their effectiveness in improving students’ understanding of integer concepts, in SDN 188/IV Jambi. Data were collected using practical questionnaires, pre- and post-tests, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and using N-gain analysis, while qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction and interpretation. The results indicate that the e-comic is practical for classroom use and effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Low mathematics learning outcomes at the junior high school level indicate that the learning media used are not yet contextualized to students’ local experiences. This research aimed to develop the JAHITAN Pocket Book, grounded in local wisdom, as a mathematics learning resource that meets the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. This study applied an R&D method using the ADDIE framework, consisting of five sequential phases, i.e., analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The participants consisted of 17 ninth-grade students from SMP Negeri Satu Atap 2 Kuala Pembuang. The validation phase indicated that the product was highly feasible, receiving 100% from material experts, 80% from media experts, and 90% from language experts. The practicality assessment received an average of 96% from teachers and 87.18% from students, both of which were classified as very practical. Meanwhile, the effectiveness evaluation on cognitive outcomes reached 78%, supported by an N-Gain value of 0.78 in the high category. Non-cognitive aspects also showed effectiveness, with learning enthusiasm at 90%, activeness at 90.20%, and skills at 94.31%. These results indicated that the locally grounded Pocket Book JAHITAN is feasible to use as a mathematics learning medium that enhances students’ learning outcomes and character development.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and describe the types of errors and misconceptions made by students in the process of constructing proofs. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, the subjects were fifth-semester students enrolled in the Abstract Algebra course at Mulawarman University. Three student responses showing significant error patterns regarding the Fundamental Isomorphism Theorem were purposively selected and analyzed based on the Selden & Selden framework. The results indicated that students faced notation, logical, and structural obstacles. Dominant errors included notation inflexibility (E3), reversed logic in surjective proofs due to quantifier neglect (E8), and structural misconceptions in defining kernel and image (M7). Additionally, over-generalization of real number rules in group operations (M5) was observed. These findings suggested that students remained at the procedural-thinking stage and had not yet reached the "Object" stage in their cognitive schema, resulting in a failure to build rigorous deductive arguments. This study recommends instructional interventions emphasizing the visualization of abstract structures and strengthening quantifier logic to minimize students' future epistemological obstacles.
