Abstract

This study examines the internalization of Islamic ecotheological values in religious counseling practices in Demak Regency from the perspective of maqasid al-shariah. The research is motivated by the coastal environmental crisis in Demak, marked by shoreline abrasion and tidal flooding, which reflects both ecological degradation and a decline in spiritual awareness. Religious counseling is therefore viewed as a strategic instrument for fostering ecological consciousness. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 Islamic religious counselors, participant observation of 10 counseling activities, and content analysis of 15 Friday sermon manuscripts 2025. The data were thematically analyzed with source and methodological triangulation, employing maqasid al-shariah as the analytical framework. The findings indicate that ecotheological internalization occurs at three levels: cognitive, affective, and conative. Counselors contextualize Qur’anic concepts such as khalīfah fī al-arḍ and the prohibition of fasād fī al-arḍ within coastal realities, deliver them through empathetic da‘wah, and encourage collective actions such as mangrove planting and eco-mosque initiatives. However, these efforts remain fragmented due to limited training and weak institutional support. This study affirms environmental preservation (ḥifẓ al-bīah) as a fundamental objective of Islamic law and highlights the need to institutionalize ecotheological da‘wah within religious counseling systems.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relevance of Sufism teachings in modern life by exploring the correlation among worship (ibadah), work ethic, and professionalism, and the influence of Sufi practice on various life aspects (religious, social, and career). The quantitative approach was employed using a survey of 150 respondents employed in public and private institutions in Surakarta. Instruments included worship scale, Islamic work ethic scale, professionalism scale, and a Sufi practice scale. Data was analyzed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression. Results showed significant positive correlations between worship & work ethic (r = 0.65, p < 0.01), worship & professionalism (r = 0.58, p < 0.01), and work ethic & professionalism (r = 0.72, p < 0.01). Sufi practice simultaneously had a significant effect on life satisfaction, emotional stability, and work productivity, with R² = 0.55. The novelty of this study is the integration of the Sufi practice variable, which has been rarely included in previous work-ethics-professionalism models in Indonesia’s modern context. The study fills an empirical gap regarding how Sufism moves beyond spiritual dimension into work and professional dimensions

Abstract

Digital communication has become ubiquitous in contemporary professional life, systematically dissolving the boundary between work and private spheres and producing documented harms, including cognitive burnout, psychosocial fatigue, and digital enslavement. To address this structural exploitation, this study offers an original contribution by assessing the “Right to Disconnect” through the lens of Islamic labor law. Adopting a normative-doctrinal legal methodology, the study examines digital overwork using the Ijārah ‘alā al-A’māl contract (service lease), Maqāṣid al-Syarī'ah (objectives of Islamic law), and the Sadd al-Żarā’i’ maxim. The findings establish that managerial expectations of digital availability beyond contracted hours without equivalent compensation (ujrah al-miṡl) constitute Garar (uncertainty) and Ẓulm (injustice), thereby invalidating the principle of Maʿlūmiyyah in Islamic contract law. Furthermore, a worker’s refusal to respond outside formal hours cannot be classified as Nusyūz (insubordination), but constitutes a legitimate jurisprudential rejection of exploitation. The study concludes that institutionalizing the Right to Disconnect is a binding legal obligation (wajib li ghairihi) under Islamic economic law, and must be incorporated into Syarī'ah-compliant employment contracts (‘Aqd) and institutional standard operating procedures.

Abstract

This study is grounded in the urgency of strengthening character education within Islamic boarding schools, particularly through the mechanism of the hidden curriculum that operates implicitly in students’ daily lives. Although studies on pesantren education have developed significantly, limited attention has been given to micro-cultural practices as a medium for internalizing obedience values. This study aims to examine the hidden curriculum in shaping students’ obedience character and to identify its empirical manifestations through symbolic practices at Annuqayah Islamic Boarding School. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving 10-15 informants, including a kiai, administrators, senior students, junior students, and alumni. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, open coding, categorization, and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the hidden curriculum is manifested in five main themes: symbolic meaning, mechanisms of value transmission, the process of internalizing obedience, impacts on students’ behavior, and variations in interpretation. The practice of arranging the kiai’s sandals embodies the values of mahabbah (affection), tawadhu’ (humility), and barokah (blessing), which are internalized through modeling, habituation, and informal social interaction. Students’ obedience develops progressively from practical actions to reflective and spiritual awareness, contributing to improved social ethics and responsibility. This study affirms that the hidden curriculum functions as a cultural mechanism operating through lived experience and everyday practices in shaping students’ obedience character, while contributing to the development of contextual and sustainable character education based on local wisdom.
