Abstract

This article aims to study and analyze the Islamic spiritual sides of the deconstruction in Kanjeng Ratu Kidul belief from the perspective of Kiai Ibnu Hajar. Kanjeng Ratu Kidul is a very popular myth among people in the southern part of Java Island. Most of them hold annual ceremonies as a way to express their request for having the blessing and being avoided from disasters. The data of this research were collected through in-depth interviews and participatory observations. Derrida’s deconstruction theory was applied to analyze the spirituality aspects. There are three deconstruction processes: (1) logocentric identification; (2) internal contradiction return; (3) difference or building new construction. This research found that Kiai Ibnu Hajar’s deconstruction spirituality was performed in three stages: (1) visual identification stage, which is done through eliciting the discourse of Kanjeng Ratu Kidul by her pictures or photos; (2) returning stage, which is done through mind-verbal activities, i.e. by understanding the nature and existence of human being through religious teachings and informal chats; (3) building new concept, which is actualized through the use of new terms among the members of Jamaah Aolia Panggang Mosque.

Abstract

The diversity of ethnicities, races, and religions is a reality in the life of the nation and state, although it is undeniable that there is a potential for conflict. This study aimed to explain the pattern of religious harmony in West Sumatra within the framework of regional autonomy which is adopted from the cultural system and local wisdom. This study used a phenomenological approach to provide accurate conditions of multi-ethnic, cultural, and religious communities. The results showed that the pattern of religious harmony through the resolution of religious conflicts in several regions in West Sumatra was carried out through the alignment of regional autonomy with local customs and culture. Forms of alignment include alignment of school uniforms, equal distribution of sacrificial meat, the presence of baralek, the tradition of manyiriah, interfaith graves between Muslims and Christians, and the application of customary philosophies. This study contributes to the theory of a cultural approach based on local wisdom in resolving religious conflicts and strengthening social integration of the community.

This article argues that counseling has not only been a dominant discourse and practice of the modern society in the West but also a cultural wealth in the traditional society in Indonesia, as can be seen in Banyuwangi people (Osing). This article further argues that traditional local values of Osing—such as moco saloko (passing on God’s teachings through songs), ngedapteyan (being aware, patient, and resilient), angering sang putri (relieving sorrow), and munajah (praying to God)—has been a foundation for discourses and practices of Osing which can develop awareness of basic concepts of counseling and therapeutic techniques based on the importance of religion and godliness. The result of this study shows that counseling based on local wisdom of Osing can contribute to enrich discourse and practices of counseling in the modern era.
