Abstract

The debate over Sharia implementation in democratic countries remains a persistent issue, driven by political, economic, and social challenges that fuel the demand for alternative governance systems. This study examines the discourse through the perspectives of Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im, the concept of NKRI Bersyariah (Sharia-based Indonesia), and the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Civilization Fiqh. Using a library research method, primary and secondary sources were analyzed comparatively to identify key themes and concepts. An-Na’im advocates for a secular state that upholds pluralism and individual freedom, arguing that Sharia should not automatically serve as the basis for state law but must evolve within diverse social and political contexts. In contrast, NKRI Bersyariah is justified through arguments of alignment between Sharia and Pancasila, Indonesia’s Muslim majority, its utility in reducing crime and state expenses, and its role in safeguarding against extreme ideologies. NU’s Civilization Fiqh integrates Sharia with human rights, emphasizing contextually relevant Islamic laws while rejecting the formalization of Sharia as state law to maintain Indonesia’s pluralistic identity. Islamic political parties, including PKB, PKS, and PAN, adopt different approaches to the implementation of Islamic Sharia through legislation, prioritizing electoral gains while navigating Indonesia’s democratic principles, reflecting the complexities of reconciling religious values with a pluralistic and democratic society.

Abstract

This study analyzes Masnun Tahir’s thoughts on Nationalist fiqh as a solution to the challenges of pluralism, intolerance, and radicalism in Indonesia. Masnun Tahir proposes a paradigm of Nationalist fiqh that integrates Islamic values with the multicultural context of Indonesian nationhood. The study employs Jurgen Habermas’s Critical Hermeneutics theory as an analytical framework to explore the transformative dimensions of this thought, encompassing interfaith dialogue, education, and the strategic role of religious scholars (ulama) in fostering social harmony. Using a library research methodology and textual analysis, this research examines Masnun Tahir’s works and the relevance of his ideas in the social context. The findings indicate that Masnun Tahir’s Nationalist fiqh offers a comprehensive approach that balances Islamic teachings with national values, positioning pluralism as a strength to enhance unity. This paradigm encourages the application of contextual Islamic law that respects local values and aligns with societal needs. Interfaith dialogue emerges as a central pillar of this paradigm, functioning as a tool to strengthen social integration and minimize conflicts arising from differences in belief. Education based on Nationalist fiqh is also identified as a key element in shaping a tolerant and patriotic generation. The analysis reveals that the paradigm of Nationalist fiqh is not merely normative but also transformative, providing practical solutions to the challenges of intolerance and radicalism. However, its implementation faces obstacles, including social resistance and the need for cross-sectoral support. With inclusive and sustainable strategies, Nationalist fiqh holds significant potential as an instrument for inclusive social transformation in Indonesia. This study contributes to the enrichment of theoretical discourse and offers a new perspective on bridging religion and nationhood in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

The long history of Sanggau, West Kalimantan, shows relations between ethnicities and religions. Several major and open conflict events in West Kalimantan did not hit Sanggau. Despite social tensions, the Sanggau community managed to maintain the harmony of the community. This study is intended to look at the recipes Sanggau community in an effort to maintain community harmony for inter-religious and inter-ethnic, and how to resolve conflicts that have arisen since the past until now. This qualitative research was carried out with a sociological approach, and data collection techniques through interviews with various community leaders, observations on relations between residents, and documentation studies on various documents and publications about Sanggau. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The results of this research show that Sanggau has been awake since the early period, the reform period, until today it is relatively able to maintain harmony and prevent open conflicts. It is common for there to be conflicts in the community, but the Sanggau people have managed to resolve conflicts and maintain their harmony. Existing conflicts related to the construction of houses of worship, religious conversions, and marriages involving couples of different religions can be resolved quickly and appropriately so that they do not become open conflicts. The approach to conflict resolution is carried out by religious leaders, ethnic leaders, and local governments by carrying out local wisdom such as the “Ngudas” ritual which builds harmony as a common identity even though they are ethnically and religiously different.

Abstract

This study examines the long-debated relationship between khilafah (caliphate) and democracy, which are often viewed as two opposing political poles. The issue arises because both concepts are frequently interpreted solely as systems or forms of government, leading to a reductive understanding. While democracy has an established framework as a political system, the notion of the caliphate has been shaped by ideological biases. As a result, both supporters and critics of the caliphate have misconstrued its Qur’anic meaning, perpetuating the misconception that the caliphate represents a specific political structure. This research seeks to clarify the original meaning of khilafah beyond political interests and to explore the possibility of reconciling it with democratic principles. Using the thematic interpretation method to uncover the Qur’anic conception of the caliphate and Kuntowijoyo’s Prophetic Social Science as an analytical framework, this study finds that khilafah is not a state system but a divine moral character that reflects human responsibility to emulate God’s attributes. Furthermore, the caliphate should be understood as an intellectual and ethical movement grounded in knowledge, rather than as a doctrinal or institutional form of governance.

Abstract

Most people in West Nusa Tenggara have limited understanding of the concepts and benefits of Islamic finance. This article aims to present an innovative approach to strengthening Islamic law of financial literacy through the use of local wisdom in NTB. In addition, this study aims to explore an innovative approach to strengthening Islamic financial literacy by integrating elements of local wisdom rooted in the traditions and cultural practices of NTB communities. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving local religious leaders, community elders, and financial practitioners in Bima, NTB. The findings reveal that incorporating local wisdom, such as customary gatherings, storytelling traditions, and culturally embedded values like gotong royong (cooperation) significantly enhances community engagement and understanding of Islamic financial principles. These culturally contextualized approaches foster a sense of relevance and trust, thereby increasing the effectiveness of financial education efforts. The study concludes that integrating local wisdom into Islamic financial literacy programs offers a culturally responsive strategy to promote financial inclusion and economic empowerment in NTB. The findings have practical implications for policymakers, educators, and financial institutions aiming to design more inclusive and locally grounded Islamic financial literacy initiatives.

Abstract

Across cultures, people with disabilities often challenge negative attitudes, discrimination, and even social exclusion. At the same time, religious narratives (al-Qur’ān) are frequently understood to justify the difference between people with disabilities (a’mā) and ordinary people (al-baṣīr). Therefore, this paper will critically study the interpretation of QS. ‘Abasa 1-4 to redefine Quranic ethics in dealing with people with disabilities. This paper analyzes the interpretation of Muslim scholars from classical to contemporary on QS. ‘Abasa 1-4 through an analytic descriptive approach. This paper suggests the orthodoxy of classical to modern interpretations in comprehending QS. ‘Abasa 1-4. Three main topics, in general, are highlighted by classical to contemporary exegetes in understanding QS. ‘Abasa 1-4. Firstly, the profile of ‘Abdullāh ibn Ummī Maktūm as a person with disabilities who visited the forum of the Prophet Muhammad. Although there are different opinions, most commentators believe ‘Abdullāh ibn Ummī Maktūm is the figure discussed in  QS. ‘Abasa 1-4. Secondly, ‘Abdullāh ibn Ummī Maktūm’s visit was to seek religious education from the Prophet Muhammad. This indicates that the Quran prioritizes equal rights to education, regardless of wealth, strength, disability status, etc. Thirdly, the Prophet Muhammad’s reaction of frowning and turning away served as a form of moral education and teaching etiquette in public spaces to anyone, regardless of social status.

Abstract

This research addresses religious and community diversity to prevent exclusive religious expression in multireligious communities in Mojokerto, East Java, especially in Pohjejer Village. The village has a diverse social and religious background, with the majority of the population adhering to Islam, but there are also small groups of followers of other religions. The informants in this study consisted of 15 individuals selected purposively, including religious leaders, community leaders, members of religious organisations, and villagers involved in daily interfaith interactions. They were selected based on their central role in the social and religious dynamics of the village and their influence on the existing diversity. This study identifies factors that can trigger exclusive religious expression and provides insights into how interactions between religious communities can be managed to minimise potential conflicts. The findings show that an inclusive approach, interfaith education, and interfaith dialogue are key to maintaining harmony. The new contribution of this study is an emphasis on the importance of a more holistic understanding of social interaction in the context of Indonesia’s heterogeneous Islamic society, which can be an essential reference in Islamic studies related to the management of diversity in regions with similar characteristics.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the historicity of hadith study and its learning model in Indonesia and Uzbekistan by making the research locus of 3 (three) State Islamic Universities: State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kudus, UIN Syekh Wasil Kediri, and UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang as representations of Islamic universities in Indonesia and the Tashkent Islamic Institute as a representation of Islamic universities in Uzbekistan. This research used a qualitative approach with observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The collected data were then analyzed descriptively and critically. The result shows that the network of scholars who entered Indonesia and Uzbekistan through trade routes intensified their struggles with hadith. The Prophet’s hadith is studied for its transmission, content, guidance, and application in these two countries. Hadith learning in universities, especially Islamic universities, is now a basic compulsory subject known as institute courses and is supported by facilities and infrastructure that enhance the comfort of the learning experience. Indonesia and Uzbekistan share concerns about studying the hadith of the Prophet PBUH because the hadith is the second source of Islamic law after the Qur’an. Hadith studies in Uzbekistan emphasize hadith studies of classic primary hadith books, while Indonesian hadith studies have been linked to global and contemporary issues.

Abstract

Rausyan Fikr Institute in Yogyakarta is often claimed as one of the Shia agents in the midst of Indonesian society that adheres to the Sunni tradition. This study analyzes the religious discourse developed there and the contribution of the discourse to the reasoning and model of religiosity while employing qualitative-descriptive research. The data source was from the director, a tutor at Rausyan Fikr Institute. The other data source is the participants of the study. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, non-participatory observation, and documentation. The data analysis applied the steps of data reduction, data display, and data verification or conclusions. The results found that the religious discourse developed at Rausyan Fikr is Iranian Islamic Philosophy, especially the thoughts of Murtadha Muthahhari. Iran is often identified with Shia. Therefore, the existence of Rausyan Fikr has been questioned. Apart from these problems, the study of Iranian Islamic Philosophy discussed at Rausyan Fikr contributed positively to the shaping of the reasoning and model of religiosity of its participants, which is those who have a religion should not be instant and dogmatic, but must be based on a critical and rational attitude. In addition, having a religion should not be exclusive and extremist, but must be inclusive and moderate. This finding enriches insights about the dynamics of Islamic discourse, especially the study of Islamic philosophy in Indonesia, and also enriches the literature on minority community studies.

Abstract

The Averroism movement emerged as a form of support and resistance from European thinkers who followed Ibn Rushd’s way of thinking against church authority. This movement opposed the indoctrination by church authorities that restricted freedom of thought. Church authorities assumed that church doctrine was true and should not contradict it. The impact of the massive Averroism movement caused the loss of church authority accompanied by internal conflicts that hit the church camp. To strengthen the doctrine and faith of Catholics, Pope Paul III ordered Ignatius Loyola to establish schools, colleges, and seminaries which were institutions engaged in education known as the Society of Jesus. This study seeks to review and deepen the historical and philosophical study of Averroes’ movement in the establishment and development of the Society of Jesus in Indonesia. This study uses a literature review research method with two approaches, namely the historical research approach and the philosophical approach. The results of the study stated that there were two factors relating the Averroism movement to the development of the Society of Jesus education in Indonesia,: The loss of church authority due to opposition to the Averroism movement and Efforts to indoctrinate through education about Catholic teachings and understanding through the Society of Jesus. This study emphasizes that the establishment and development of the Society of Jesus in Indonesia cannot be separated from the influence of the Averroism which is expressed in thoughts about freedom of thought and the indoctrination of education.
