Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by prolonged elevated blood glucose levels that can lead to organ damage. Many adolescents have a diet high in sugar, fast food, and sugary drinks, as well as a lack of physical activity due to gadget use and a sedentary lifestyle. These habits can lead to obesity and insulin resistance, which are major factors in the development of diabetes. The problem is worsened by limited adolescent knowledge regarding the definition, risk factors, symptoms, and prevention of diabetes mellitus. Attitudes and perceived risks related to diabetes, including the importance of physical activity, treatment, prevention of complications, and risk control, also remain low. Therefore, assessing adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes about diabetes mellitus is essential. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes and perceived risks related to diabetes mellitus among adolescents. The study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of adolescents at SMAN 4 Kota Pangkalpinang, with a sample of 277 respondents selected through simple random sampling. The instruments used were a knowledge questionnaire and an attitudes and perceived risk questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rho test. The results showed a significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes and perceived risks related to diabetes mellitus (p value 0.00, r 0,405). The study recommends providing health education for adolescents to improve their understanding of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Inadequate breast milk production remains a common problem among postpartum mothers and may affect exclusive breastfeeding practices. Although moringa leaves and banana blossom have been traditionally used as natural galactagogues, evidence regarding their combined effect on breast milk production remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of moringa oleifera leaves and banana blossom consumption on breast milk production among postpartum mothers in the working area of Ngasem Public Health Center, Kediri Regency, Indonesia. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted involving 15 postpartum mothers selected using purposive sampling. Breast milk production was assessed before and after the intervention using an observation checklist. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of 0.05. The findings showed that breast milk production improved after the intervention, with 86.7% of respondents demonstrating adequate milk production. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference before and after intervention (p=0.003). Consumption of moringa leaves and banana blossom may improve breast milk production among postpartum mothers and could be considered a low-cost complementary nutritional intervention to support breastfeeding programs.

Abstract

Constipation is a frequent complication among post stroke patients and is often worsened by immobility, medication effects, dietary limitations, and neurological impairments. Effective bowel management is essential to improve comfort, prevent additional complications, and support recovery. Aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the STROKE EASE intervention in reducing constipation severity among post stroke patients who received thrombolysis. A quasi experimental pretest posttest study was conducted involving thirty post stroke patients in a private hospital in East Jakarta. Demographic and clinical data were collected, including age, sex, functional independence, diet type, comorbidities, muscle strength, and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score. Constipation severity was measured using the Constipation Assessment Scale before and after the intervention. Changes in scores were analyzed using paired samples t tests. The mean age of participants was 64.03 years with almost equal distribution between men and women. Most patients required partial assistance with daily activities and consumed a soft diet. Nearly all had comorbid hypertension or diabetes. The mean National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score was 6.50. Constipation Assessment Scale scores decreased significantly from 11.00 before the intervention to 2.53 after the intervention with p less than 0.001. STROKE EASE intervention significantly reduced constipation severity in post thrombolysis stroke patients. This evidence based nursing approach offers a practical method to improve bowel function and patient comfort. Further studies with larger samples are recommended.

Abstract

Social support and coping strategies are vital components for nurses navigating the various challenges and stressors inherent in their profession. In fact, the level of social support received and the specific coping mechanisms employed significantly influence the overall quality of nursing performance. On that account, this research aimed to evaluate and compare the social support levels and coping strategies used by nurses at Tadulako Hospital and Sis Al Jufri Palu General Hospital. This quantitative study utilized a comparative design with a total sampling technique. The participants included 28 nurses from Tadulako Hospital and 27 nurses from Sis Al Jufri Palu General Hospital. Upon investigation, data analysis conducted via the Mann-Whitney test revealed specific patterns in both facilities. Most nurses at Tadulako Hospital relied on support from significant others. By comparison, those at Sis Al Jufri Palu General Hospital primarily received support from significant others and family members. Regarding coping mechanisms, the majority of nurses at both hospitals utilized problem-focused coping to manage their professional demands. As far as the statistical results are concerned, no significant difference was found in the social support levels between the two groups (p = 0.374). Nevertheless, a significant difference was observed in the specific coping strategies applied by nurses at Tadulako Hospital compared to those at Sis Al Jufri Palu General Hospital (p = 0.033). Ultimately, social support remains an essential factor for healthcare providers, as high levels of support foster the use of adaptive coping strategies necessary to meet the rigors of the job.

Abstract

Hemodialysis patients face complex issues, including decreased self-efficacy, high stress levels, and diminished quality of life. Comprehensive interventions are required to enhance patients' self-management capabilities. This study aims to analyze the effect of structured self-care management health education based on peer group support on the self-efficacy, stress, and quality of life of hemodialysis patients. This quasi-experimental study used a pre-post test control group design involving 70 respondents (35 intervention, 35 control) selected via consecutive sampling. The intervention group received four sessions of structured health education based on peer support. Research instruments included a self-efficacy questionnaire, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-42), and the KDQOL-SF 1.3. Data were analyzed using Paired T-Test and Mann-Whitney tests. There were significant increases in self-efficacy (p=0.006) and quality of life (p=0.000), as well as a significant decrease in stress levels (p=0.027) within the intervention group. In contrast, the control group showed no significant changes across the three variables (p > 0.05). Peer group support proved effective in facilitating the exchange of experiences and emotional support, which strengthened patients' self-belief in managing their condition. Structured self-care management health education based on peer group support is effective in improving self-efficacy and quality of life while reducing stress levels in hemodialysis patients. This intervention is recommended as an integral part of supportive nursing care in hemodialysis units.

Abstract

Cervical cancer ranks as the second most common malignancy among women in Indonesia, following breast cancer, and is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Over 70% of cervical cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, often due to delayed detection and treatment, which significantly affects therapeutic outcomes and increases mortality rates. This study employed an observational analytic approach with a case-control design to examine the association between age at first marriage, parity, smoking habits, hormonal contraceptive use, and family history with cervical cancer incidence. A total of 116 respondents were selected and evenly divided into case and control groups (1:1 ratio). Data were collected from medical records at Dr. (H.C) Ir. Soekarno Regional General Hospital, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, in 2024. The data analysis was conducted using chi-square statistical test and multivariate logistic regression. The findings revealed that age at marriage, parity, and hormonal contraceptive use were significantly associated with cervical cancer incidence (p < 0.05). Conversely, no significant associations were observed for smoking and family history (p > 0.05). Hormonal contraceptive use and parity emerged as key determinants. These results underscore the need to reinforce cervical cancer prevention programs through targeted education on the long-term risks of hormonal contraceptive use and by enhancing routine screening coverage at the primary healthcare level.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease that has become a serious public health problem in Indonesia and the world. Indonesia ranks 7th in the world with 10.7 million diabetes sufferers in 2019 and this number is expected to increase to 13.7 million in 2030 and 16.6 million in 2045. Complications that occur in DM sufferers are due to cell damage and death caused by increased oxidative stress and the activity of inflammatory mediators including interleukin-6 (Il-6). Administration of oral hypoglycemic drugs to DM patients does not show improvement in oxidative stress. Additional therapy is needed for DM patients that can reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory mediators and support the work of endogenous antioxidants. Bandotan leaves are plants that contain antioxidants and are used as a traditional medicine for DM patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of Il-6 as a marker of inflammation due to oxidative stress in DM patients after administration of bandotan leaf extract. The research revealed significant differences between the control, bandotan, and glimberclamide groups. The bandotan group had the lowest IL-6 levels at 1.63 pg/ml. Bandotan leaf extract caused the least inflammation compared to the control and glimberclamide groups.
