Abstract

Effective drainage systems are crucial for managing stormwater, preventing flooding, and promoting urban sustainability. However, rapid urbanization and climate change exacerbate drainage challenges in cities like Semarang, where poor infrastructure often struggles with heavy rainfall and tidal floods. Despite proactive efforts, such as participation in the Water as Leverage program, the city's drainage system faces significant challenges, including financial limitations and poor coordination between stakeholders. This study applies the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Water Governance Principles to analyze the governance framework of Tenggang drainage system, identifying gaps and proposing improvements. A qualitative, descriptive approach was used, collecting primary data through interviews with government and community stakeholders, alongside secondary data from literature and document analysis. The results highlight the need for clearer roles and responsibilities, better coordination across government levels, and enhanced public participation. It was also found that integrating policies across sectors and fostering innovation could significantly improve the system's efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, strengthening transparency, trust, and community engagement is essential for achieving more inclusive governance. This study concludes that aligning Semarang’s drainage management with the OECD principles can lead to a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable system that addresses both current challenges and future water management needs.

Abstract

Educational technology has developed very rapidly. Students use it as a means to improve learning and skills. One of the educational technologies related to writing in a foreign or second language is the QuillBot-Paraphraser. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of QuillBot-Paraphraser in improving students' paraphrasing skills and the advantages and disadvantages of this feature. This study adopted mix-method research design. The quantitative data was collected through questionnaire containing closed-ended questions and analyzed using SPSS, while qualitative data was collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. Ninety students of the English Education and English Literature study program from two private universities in Semarang filled out questionnaires and ten of them were selected as respondents in semi-structured interviews. The results of quantitative data analysis show that QuillBot-Paraphraser is able to improve students' paraphrasing skills to a high level (M=4.13, SD=0.833). Respondents agreed that QuillBot-Paraphraser was effective in improving their paraphrasing skills. Differences in universities, study programs, and semesters had no effect on their opinions about the effectiveness of this tool. The semi-structured interview results show that QuillBot-Paraphraser is useful as a tool to help improve paraphrasing skills, provides fast and easy access, makes it easier to compose good and accurate paraphrased sentences, and enriches vocabulary. Apart from that, respondents in this study also stated that QuillBot-Paraphraser could make them lazy and dependent. In light of the findings, the study recommends that QuillBot-Paraphraser be used as a companion tool for writing activities, especially to improve paraphrasing skills.

Abstract

Tax avoidance is a common strategy used by companies to reduce their tax burden, which may affect government revenue and reflect the effectiveness of corporate governance. In this context, the role of the board of commissioners and the audit committee is crucial in supervising management decisions related to tax planning. Several studies have investigated the effect of corporate governance mechanisms on tax avoidance, but there is limited evidence regarding specific board characteristics such as gender diversity and meeting frequency. This study aims to examine the influence of board size, board independence, board meeting frequency, board gender diversity, and the audit committee on tax avoidance. The sample of this research consisted of 100 observations from manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the 2021–2023 period, selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. The results show that board independence and board gender diversity have a negative and significant effect on tax avoidance, while the audit committee has a positive and significant effect. Meanwhile, board size and board meeting frequency do not have a significant effect. These findings suggest that a stronger presence of independent and female commissioners contributes to more transparent and compliant tax behavior.

Abstract

Stock valuation is a crucial component of investment analysis, helping investors make informed decisions amid fluctuating market conditions. Despite its popularity, the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) often yields inconsistent results in practice, especially in emerging markets such as Indonesia. Previous studies have not sufficiently addressed how effectively CAPM distinguishes undervalued and overvalued stocks in the LQ45 Index, which comprises high-capitalization and liquid stocks on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). This study aims to assess the performance of CAPM in identifying mispriced stocks and guiding portfolio decisions. A total of 23 stocks were selected from the LQ45 Index based on their consistent inclusion from 2019 to 2023 and complete data availability. The analysis utilizes daily closing stock prices, the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) as a market proxy, and the Bank Indonesia 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate as the risk-free rate. The results reveal six undervalued stocks: PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTM), PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBRI), PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (BMRI), PT XL Axiata Tbk (EXCL), PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk (HMSP), and PT Media Nusantara Citra Tbk (MNCN). Meanwhile, 17 stocks are categorized as overvalued, including PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk (ADRO), PT Astra International Tbk (ASII), PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA), PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk (ICBP), and others. These findings confirm that CAPM remains a useful tool in valuing stocks and shaping rational investment strategies. The study contributes to a better understanding of CAPM’s empirical relevance in emerging capital markets and provides practical insights for investors and financial analysts.

Abstract

Candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida species, which is the most common fungal infection. The prevalence of this infection increases with the rise in immunocompromised cases, such as HIV/AIDS. This study aims to determine microbiological data on Candida species infection and colonization, including types and susceptibility testing to fluconazole and voriconazole. This research is descriptive in nature. The study population consisted of people living with HIV who were screened by taking saliva samples, which showed the growth of Candida species. Identification of Candida species was performed using Gram staining, germ tube tests, and color identification in Hicrome Candida agar medium. Susceptibility testing was conducted using the Kirby-Bauer method for fluconazole and voriconazole. The diameter of the inhibition zone of Candida was measured and compared with CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute) standards. A total of 91 Candida species isolates were found. Candida albicans was the most frequently isolated species (75%), followed by Candida tropicalis (11%), Candida krusei (10%), and Candida glabrata (4%). The sensitivity of Candida albicans to fluconazole and voriconazole was 98.5%, while Candida tropicalis showed 100% sensitivity. Candida albicans remains the most prevalent isolate and is still sensitive to fluconazole and voriconazole.

Abstract

Educational institutions must continue to develop effective learning methods, such as presentation tasks that combine theory and practice. In English learning, apart from language skills, soft skills such as communication, conversation, collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving are very important. Vocational IDN Boarding School has set out to provide quality education and continues to improve learning methods that are different from other schools. This research aims to find out how students perceive the presentation of the English presentation task learning in English learning methods for improving students' speaking skills at a vocational boarding school. In this study, qualitative data were used for analyzing it. Data collection in this research used interviews methods, and involved 20 students from grades 10 and 11. The result reveals that the implementation of presentation tasks in English has gone well. Students are more motivated to practice speaking English to improve their speaking skills. The researchers found the novelty that some students’ implementation of presentation didn’t use the grammar (pattern sentence) and lack of pronunciation. It is hoped that the results of this research can provide nuance or valuable things for presentation development and learning practices in the world of education and will be able to contribute to the literature on English learning in particular and the development of soft skills.
