This study focused on the KWL (Know-Want-Learned) strategy in students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. The objective of this study was to find out how the KWL strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. The design of the research was collaborative classroom action research. This research was conducted in two cycles; each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. By using the purposive sampling technique, the students in XD of a certain school in Semarang were selected as the sample of this study. The sample consisted of 30 students, 20 females and 10 males. The researchers used an observation sheet and a test to collect the data. The result showed that the KWL strategy was a way of teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text. Based on the test score, in cycle one, there were 50% students who achieved a minimum standard score, and in cycle two, 90% students achieved a minimum standard score. Thus, it could be concluded that the KWL strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text in the way of helping students to reach the minimum standard score.

Abstract

Both Indonesia and Estonia have similar contexts of learning English as a foreign language.  The learning achievements reveal a considerable disparity when considering the worldwide assessment of English proficiency, with Indonesia ranking 79th and Estonia securing the 23rd position according to the (EF English Proficiency Index in 2023). This study compares English curricula in Indonesia and Estonia, examining the differences between them despite similar conditions for teaching English as a foreign language. The fundamental goal of the study was to identify the factors that influence diverse learning outcomes in various countries. The study used content analysis to compare curricular papers from both countries on six critical criteria including: (1) stakeholders involved in English curriculum development, (2) stakeholders' reactions to the English curriculum, (3) stated purposes of the curriculum, (4) educational philosophies underlying the English curricula, (5) unstated purposes of the curricula, and (6) influential factors shaping the curricula. The analysis suggested that the key drivers to the discrepancy in learning results in both countries were national policy, pedagogy, and assessment implementations. The results showed that the main result of the mentioned alterations underscored the need for an enhanced approach to the instruction and acquisition of English. Allocating sufficient time for English learning allows students to maximize their opportunities for developing language skills. Moreover, integrating speaking and writing elements into final evaluations and embracing a communicative language strategy can inspire both educators and learners to participate in more genuine learning experiences.

Timely publication of financial statements needs to be done by companies so that stakeholders can make decisions according to their needs. This study uses a quantitative approach to explore how corporate governance and audit matters affect the length of time for financial report publication. The research population came from LQ-45 index companies and listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2020-2022 which were analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 90 research samples. This study uses secondary data from the official website of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) and the company's official website. The findings of this study are that the audit committee and independent commissioners have a significant negative effect on audit report lag, but key audit matters show an insignificant negative effect. Future research is expected to expand the sample to other industries or examine factors such as business complexity, level of regulation, and economic conditions. This research has important implications for the government, OJK, companies, and KAP. The government and OJK can design policies to encourage effective corporate governance practices, while companies and KAP can use the results of this study as motivation to increase transparency and accountability in audit reports.

Abstract

In recent years, some universities have required their students to publish scientific papers as one of the graduation requirements. These scientific papers can be in the form of articles published in scientific journals or in proceedings. Several factors affect the success of students in writing these scientific papers. One of them is writing anxiety. The study aims to investigate EFL students’ writing anxiety when writing scientific papers. The respondents were English Education and English Literature Study Program students (N=61). The data were collected with a questionnaire. The study found that the students have a moderate level of writing anxiety. The mean score of anxiety is 61.82, indicating a moderate level of writing anxiety. Somatic anxiety score ranged from 8.00 to 35.00, with a mean of 20.10 and a standard deviation of 5.29, while avoidance anxiety showed a mean of 17.80 with a standard deviation of 4.10. Cognitive anxiety scores ranged from 17.00 to 36.00, with a mean of 23.92. This was the highest mean score, followed by somatic anxiety, with avoidance being the least prevalent. The results of this study show that the majority of EFL students experience significant levels of anxiety when writing scientific papers for publications, and the three types of anxiety, namely cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and avoidance behavior, play roles in the general level of writing anxiety. Implications of these findings suggest that educational institutions should provide academic support, particularly in helping students develop effective strategies to manage cognitive anxiety and improve topic selection processes, which could lead the students to enhance their writing performance and have a greater likelihood of successful publication.
