Abstract

The research discusses the issue of hegemony in Hamka’s novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. The work is apparently coded with custom system in its society and can be seen as a reflection of social reality. The novel explores the custom system in Minangkabau society and reveals that nearly every member of the society is bound by the existing cultural norms. From one side, the cultural system gives a good guideline for the people; but on the other side, the hegemony within the cultural systems brings the people into rigidity. No one is brave enough to stand against the hegemony of the existing norms. The research focuses solely on the form of hegemony practices done by the elders in Minangkabau culture. This research is done by descriptive qualitative method through literary sociological approach by using the theory of power of hegemony proposed by Antonio Gramsci. The data are obtained by using reading and noting technique. The data source is the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck by Hamka. The results of the research consist of two points; (1) hegemony in the form of ideology namely authoritarianism. (2) hegemony in the forms of culture namely kinship system and social stratification in Minangkabau.

Abstract

The research is related to social problems. People's lives are actually changing with the times. In the process of the changing, sometimes unexpected conditions arise or should not occur. This unexpected condition gradually becomes a polemic and has a negative impact on people's lives. This condition is called a social problem. Social problems cannot be ignored because they can disrupt global economic and political stability. The discussion of this research focuses on two social problems: poverty and prostitution. Poverty is the condition of a person who has no wealth, lacks, or has very low income and of course cannot fulfill his daily needs; while poverty is also closely related to prostitution. One can become a prostitute because of poverty or circumstances. Prostitution is a sexual activity outside the institution of marriage and is generally carried out by women. These two social problems can be found not only in the novel but also in the real world; so the sociology of literature is used as an approach in this research. The whole research is conducted using a qualitative descriptive method because the focus of the research is related to social problems. The results of the analysis show that this novel provides two descriptions of social problems: poverty and prostitution and these two social problems are clearly illustrated through the data obtained from the novel.

Abstract

This study is based on Tere Liye's novel Negeri Para Bedebah, which deals with personality types. Thomas or Tommi is a professional financial consultant and the founder of Thomas Co., a major financial consulting firm. Thomas is a one-of-a-kind individual since his co-workers regard him as adaptable. Thomas has a labile personality in the sense that his behavior is unpredictable and also changeable, adjusting to a certain situation. The grand theory used to support the whole research is the one proposed by Gerard Heymen, in which it is stated that every individual’s personality is unique and could be adjusted to a certain condition. Literary psychology is applied as an approach in the study, as literary psychology conducts literary studies by looking at literary works as psychological activities for both the author and the readers. The study is conducted by the descriptive qualitative method, showing the personality of the main character; this is a type of individual phenomenon that can also be found in society. The results show that the protagonist has three significant types of personality: smartness, self-support, and responsibility.
