Abstract

This research was aimed at reflecting how Hirata reveals the tin exploitation in Belitung Island through his debut novel, Laskar Pelangi. It is significant and worthy research as it is an effort to raise awareness and understanding of human beings about the importance of nature and the environment, especially awareness for people who have the power to determine nature protection policies and the importance of nature conservation for the preservation of ecosystems for future generations. This research applied the theory of ecocriticism proposed by Gerrard supported by the theory offered by Gutti, Aji and Magaji. This research uses descriptive qualitative in which the data obtained from the novel are analyzed to reveal the process of tin exploitation in Belitung Island. The research results show that tin exploitation in Belitung Island is carried out both in traditional and modern ways. Traditional tools used to mine tin are phok, aichang, khaknai and kiaw to make water embankments and shovels to dig soil, while modern tools used to mine tin are machines in the forms of heavy equipment, such as dredgers and excavators. Traditional tin mining activities in Belitung which are carried out without a Mining Business Permit or Unlicensed Mining is also revealed in the novel.

This research is about time deixis on the screenplay of The Theory of Everything by Anthony McCarten with various indicators that explain the whole analysis, such as multiverse concepts in the physics law that are in force. The lack of understanding of language and time deixis is a serious problem often creating chaos in human civilization, resulting in something very extraordinary bad impact on life that seems to have nothing to do at all. This research is useful to make humanity aware of the importance of understanding language and understanding pluralism as a new era of human, not only in culture but also the way to learn. In the fact, that has small probability of success to rebel it off since it involves the prosperity of human life throughout the world. However, this study does not aim to force readers to change the ideology, perspective, and point of view that have been believed, only as the informative research showing new concepts of understanding literary work and life concepts so far. Notwithstanding, political interests in the future may be able to restructure all policies that have been mutually agreed internationally, if the agreement is nearing a saturation point. The method used in this study is a scientific methodology with qualitative description by collecting data through the screen play and literary review. And, various historical and future suggestions are also presented in this study. The results show that there are exposures of time deixis in the screenplay: ambiguity, polysemy, and vagueness.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal poverty which is one of the social problems reflected in Andrea Hirata's novel Orang Orang Biasa. This research is considered important and feasible to do because it is an effort to convey social criticism to the government and related parties on poverty which is the most common social problem often faced by society. This research is a descriptive qualitative research and applies the sociological theory of literature put forward by Laurenseon and Swingewood (1972) to understand and evaluate literary works by considering social aspects. The finding of this study indicates various types of social problems in the novel stem from one problem, namely poverty, both material and moral poverty.

Abstract

The research discusses the issue of hegemony in Hamka’s novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck. The work is apparently coded with custom system in its society and can be seen as a reflection of social reality. The novel explores the custom system in Minangkabau society and reveals that nearly every member of the society is bound by the existing cultural norms. From one side, the cultural system gives a good guideline for the people; but on the other side, the hegemony within the cultural systems brings the people into rigidity. No one is brave enough to stand against the hegemony of the existing norms. The research focuses solely on the form of hegemony practices done by the elders in Minangkabau culture. This research is done by descriptive qualitative method through literary sociological approach by using the theory of power of hegemony proposed by Antonio Gramsci. The data are obtained by using reading and noting technique. The data source is the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck by Hamka. The results of the research consist of two points; (1) hegemony in the form of ideology namely authoritarianism. (2) hegemony in the forms of culture namely kinship system and social stratification in Minangkabau.

Abstract

The research is related to social problems. People's lives are actually changing with the times. In the process of the changing, sometimes unexpected conditions arise or should not occur. This unexpected condition gradually becomes a polemic and has a negative impact on people's lives. This condition is called a social problem. Social problems cannot be ignored because they can disrupt global economic and political stability. The discussion of this research focuses on two social problems: poverty and prostitution. Poverty is the condition of a person who has no wealth, lacks, or has very low income and of course cannot fulfill his daily needs; while poverty is also closely related to prostitution. One can become a prostitute because of poverty or circumstances. Prostitution is a sexual activity outside the institution of marriage and is generally carried out by women. These two social problems can be found not only in the novel but also in the real world; so the sociology of literature is used as an approach in this research. The whole research is conducted using a qualitative descriptive method because the focus of the research is related to social problems. The results of the analysis show that this novel provides two descriptions of social problems: poverty and prostitution and these two social problems are clearly illustrated through the data obtained from the novel.

In addition, with reference to social praxis, ecolinguistics recognizes three dimensions, namely ideological, sociological, and biological dimensions relating to the exploitation of the environment for fishing through ritual speech. The purpose of this study is to determine the ideology reflected in the speech. The study employed a qualitative research methodology, utilizing a phenomenological approach. The study makes use of verbal expressions expressed by naval commanders, gathered through a combination of participatory observation and comprehensive interviews at a central location of fish market and sanctuary in Banda Aceh, Aceh Indonesia. The data collected serve as the basis for the analysis and interpretation of the research findings. The respected ideology was then compared to the concept of ecosophy. The results of the analysis show that the ritual holistically contains the ideology of environmental preservation. The efforts to assist the natural, social, and spiritual preservations, specifically in marine environments, are obviously detected in the discourse. The ideology offered is in accordance with the concept of ecosophy, which includes beneficial discourse. However, part of the utterances also reflect the ambivalent discourse, but not the destructive one.

Abstract

Promiscuity, a recurring theme in literature, is examined through various lenses, reflecting the complexities of human relationships, societal norms, and cultural contexts. In Eka Kurniawan's novel Lelaki Harimau, promiscuity serves as a thematic lens through which Kurniawan explores the intricate interplay of desire, power, and societal expectations. This paper aims to delve into the portrayal of promiscuity in Lelaki Harimau, employing a sociology of literature approach combined with a qualitative descriptive method. Through close textual analysis and thematic exploration, the study seeks to unravel the cultural, social, and psychological dimensions of promiscuity as depicted in the novel. The research findings highlight the destructive consequences of unchecked hedonism, as exemplified by characters like Anwar Sadat and his daughter Laila. Furthermore, the study discusses how Kurniawan's narrative challenges entrenched notions of morality and sexuality, urging readers to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature and societal constructs. Ultimately, Lelaki Harimau emerges not only as a compelling work of literature but also as a powerful commentary on the enduring relevance of literature in illuminating social issues and advocating for positive change.
