Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to find out linguistic errors contained in the translation results from Indonesian into German produced by students using Google Translate. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, defining, interpreting and correcting linguistic errors that appear in the results of Indonesian translations into German with the help of Google Translate. The data collection technique was through giving a translation test to 16 fifth semester students. This research found that several errors, such as errors in choosing words that were not appropriate to the context, using inappropriate sentence structure or rules, were caused by differences in language rules between Indonesian and German. Google Translate in this case is indeed very helpful for translators in translating during the translation process, but translators must be aware that the translations produced by Google Translate still require improvements, especially in terms of choosing the right words according to the context and arranging sentences correctly. Keywords: Translation, Translate, Google Translate, Indonesian, German

Abstract

Abstrak. The phenomenon of interference occurs in sociolinguistics when one language or dialect impacts another. This study was conducted with the objective to shed light on the specific types of phonological interference experienced by students in a multilingual class at MAN Kota Palangka Raya. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, this investigation focused on the phonological aspects influenced by students' native languages—Banjarese and Dayakese. The research revealed that students exhibit tendencies of Sound Addition, Sound Omission, and Sound Replacement across both language groups as they navigate between their mother tongues and English. The findings stress the complexities involved in English language teaching in environments where students' linguistic backgrounds are diverse. Understanding the nature of phonological interference can equip educators with the necessary tools to develop pedagogical strategies that are attuned to the linguistic challenges faced by multilingual students. This, in turn, can aid in fostering a more effective and inclusive approach to language education that helps diminish language acquisition barriers attributed to the influence of the learners' first languages. Keywords: Interference, Multilingual, Sound Addition, Sound Omission, Sound Replacement.

Abstract

Abstract. The research is a pre-experiment quantitative research with one group pre-test post-test design which aims to determinate the effectiveness of Role Playing method on Arabic speaking skills (Maharah Kalam) of fifth grade students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Fatthu Rahman Makassar. The population and samples in this study were all fifth grade students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Fatthu Rahman Makassar which amounted to 24 students using total sampling technique. The basis of the research results was obtained by giving oral pre-test and post-test with the material "Address" and "It's a Holiday". The results of hypothesis testing using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test show that the Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) is 0.000 which is then compared with the significance level of 0.05. The value of 0.000 is smaller than 0.05, thus H0 is rejected or H1 is accepted, so it can be stated that the Role Playing method is effective in learning Arabic speaking skills (Maharah Kalam) for fifth grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Fatthu Rahman Makassar. Keywords: Effectiveness, Role Playing, Arabic Speaking Skills

Abstract

Abstract. In educational settings, one effort to mitigate effects of climate change is through the display of Linguistic Landscapes (LLs). The signage can bring about changes and contribute to good practices to avert and reduce the impact of climate change (CC). Therefore, this study aims to find out the sign patterns and to describe the language use in the LLs related to CC. This study documented 351 signs in four senior high schools in Kebumen, Central Java, Indonesia, which were then qualitatively portrayed. To reveal the language used in LSs related to CC, the data were classified based on language patterns. The findings of the study show that the sign patterns applied in CC LSs are monolingual and bilingual patterns involving Indonesian, English, French, and Javanese with Indonesian as the dominant language, English and French as foreign languages, and Javanese as the leased used language. Meanwhile, in terms of language use related to CC Indonesian is used as communication and translation function to deliver CC messages, English and French are used as media to learn languages and to deliver international topics related to CC, and Javanese is used to maintain both its language and the environment. This study has shown that LSs to some extent contribute to the community's adaptation and mitigation to climate change by lowering the impact and cause of the crisis. Keywords: Climate Change, Linguistic Landscape, Linguistic Schoolscape, Language Use

Abstract

Abstract. Noun phrases (NP) are often used in forming sentences in any written work as the subject or object of the sentence. However, less research has been done regarding the use of NP in the English translation of Al-Quran. This paper investigates the patterns of NP in the English translation of Mary (Maryam) of the holy Quran translated by Talal Itani. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzed 163 data found from 98 verses of translated Mary Surah (as instrument) syntactically. Three conclusions can be drawn from this study. Firstly, 38 NP patterns appear with the most frequently used NP pattern being determiner+noun 59 times (36.20%). Second, the NPs used were complex (6.75%), 152 simple NPs (93.25%), 97 specific NPs (59.51%), and 66 general NPs (40.49%). Last, some verses are only phrases and not clauses, so 1 verse consists of 1 complex NP. The implication of this finding will help EFL learners and prospective teachers understand the function and patterns of NP in making good English sentences. This study only focuses on identifying NP patterns, future researchers are suggested to research the function of English NP in each verse in the English translation of the Koran. Keywords: Al-Quran, Function, Mary, Noun Phrase (NP), Pattern, Syntax

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to find out the real contribution of the Pinjam Pustaka literacy community in developing children's interest in reading in Sorong City. This research is descriptive qualitative type. This method is used because it can emphasize the search for meaning, the description of phenomena, and is presented in narrative form. The source of data in this research is in the form of statements submitted by the founder and volunteers of Pinjam Pustaka about the role or contribution of Pinjam Pustaka in developing children's interest in reading. The results obtained in this study are that Pinjam Pustaka takes various concrete steps in developing children's interest in reading in Sorong, such as providing quality and diverse reading materials. Pinjam Pustaka also does not close itself in terms of its literacy movement, but rather opens space for collaboration with various parties. On the other hand, in its literacy efforts, Pinjam Pustaka also experiences obstacles such as the availability of resources, because it is considered quite overwhelmed in serving the increasing number of visitors. Keywords: Literacy Community, Borrow Library, Reading Interest, Sorong.
