Abstract

Abstrak. The phenomenon of interference occurs in sociolinguistics when one language or dialect impacts another. This study was conducted with the objective to shed light on the specific types of phonological interference experienced by students in a multilingual class at MAN Kota Palangka Raya. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, this investigation focused on the phonological aspects influenced by students' native languages—Banjarese and Dayakese. The research revealed that students exhibit tendencies of Sound Addition, Sound Omission, and Sound Replacement across both language groups as they navigate between their mother tongues and English. The findings stress the complexities involved in English language teaching in environments where students' linguistic backgrounds are diverse. Understanding the nature of phonological interference can equip educators with the necessary tools to develop pedagogical strategies that are attuned to the linguistic challenges faced by multilingual students. This, in turn, can aid in fostering a more effective and inclusive approach to language education that helps diminish language acquisition barriers attributed to the influence of the learners' first languages. Keywords: Interference, Multilingual, Sound Addition, Sound Omission, Sound Replacement.

Abstract

This study explored the writing strategies employed by EFL students when composing Classroom Action Research (CAR) proposals, focusing on the frequency of strategy use. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 48 undergraduate students in the English Language Education Study Program at the University of Palangka Raya. The questionnaire measured the frequency of pre-writing, while-writing, and revising strategies. The findings reveal that students frequently engaged with while-writing strategies, particularly translation from Indonesian to English. The pre-writing stage showed moderate engagement, with students commonly reviewing examples of well-written proposals but less frequently using formal outlining techniques. In the revising stage, feedback from lecturers was highly valued, with students actively using it to improve their proposals. However, self-editing strategies were less emphasized, indicating a reliance on external feedback for revisions. The study concludes that while students benefit from translation and feedback-driven revision, there is a need for more significant support in developing independent revision skills and expanding academic vocabulary.

The information collected was then analyzed and described in prose. The steps taken were: data collection, SWOT analysis (determining strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), and finding development or improvement strategies. The result showed by changing the recruitment process through the placement test process, adding program variations, and most importantly, creating teaching materials developed by themselves so that the curriculum in the course can run clearly and systematically and the seriousness of the institution in preparing the learning process can be felt by consumers.

Abstract

The folklore entitled Sanaman Mantikei is one of the legends originating from Central Kalimantan. Folklore as literacy material can be used in the teaching and learning process to strengthen student character building. This study aims to describe the values of character building in the folklore legend "Sanaman Mantikei". The method used in this study was a qualitative descriptive method with the research data source in the form of Central Kalimantan Folklore books. The results of the study showed that the folklore "Sanaman Mantikei" contains character building values (1) hard work; (2) creativity; and (3) love-peace. The values of character building contained in these folktales form the basis that folklore can be used as a medium to introduce cultural stories of an area and as a means of educating students' character in the teaching and learning process.
