Abstract

This paper examines Khaled M. Abou El-Fadl’s hermeneutics in his work entitled Speaking God’s Name: Authority and Women. This figure is interesting to study because his theory stems from his own experience. At first he was an admirer salafi, but later criticizes it. This paper focuses on his thoughts about religious meaning texts and applies descriptive-analytical method. This study shows that El-Fadl’s hermeneutics is influenced by western philosopher, such as Gadamer and Gracia. He formulated a set of condition upon which one has to ground his/her interpretation of religious texts.

Abstract

The Indonesian Constitutional Court’ decision Number 46/PUU-VIII/2010 about the legal status of “out-of-wedlock born child” based on argumentum a fortiori or al-mafhūm al-muwāfaqah. According to this principle “if a child whose genealogy is not yet clear could still be ascribed to one who claims him/her through istilhaq”, then why not determine a child’s genealogy whose biological father is known”. The problems, however, arises when a child was born out-of-legal wedlock. Can his/her nasab be ascribed to his/her father? This study examines the Prophetic tradition on this matter using takhrij hadith methods. It shows that ḥadīth “al-walad li al-firāshi wa li al-‘āhir al-ḥajr wahtajibī yā Sawdah” is valid (ṣaḥīḥ). This ḥadīth explains that a child can be ascribed genealogically to one who claim him/her as his child. However, such claim cannot result in maḥram relationship with child’s sister. It seems that the Prophet acknowledges the existence of biological father but his nasab cannot be deduced to his child.

Abstract

The textuality of the Qur'an contains a high quality of literary aspect. Therefore, a literary approach to the Qur’an is one of the ways in the understanding of the meaning and message of it. This approach has been used by modern and contemporary Muslim scholars, and even by western scholars of Qur’an studies. This paper discusses Mustansir Mir’s thought and literary approach to the Qur’an, focusing on the story of Joseph. This study shows that Mir reflects on the nature and power of God and reveals the moral messages in the scene and structured dialogue on the passages in Sūra Yūsuf. It also reveals that Mir’s approach to the story is structural where he elaborates the structure, plot, and scene of the story and connects them with the moral message of the story.

Abstract

In the Islamic doctrine, Allah is the creator, while the universe including human beings is the creatures. The universe glorifies Allah. Glorification is the proof of the universe’s obedience to Allah. The study aims to shed light on how the universe performs such a glorification. This article examines the concept of tasbīḥ al-‘ālam proposed by Muḥammad bin al-Ḥusayn Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (544 H/1149 AD – 606 H/1209 AD), a rationalist, in his book Tafsīr al-Kabīr aw Mafātiḥ al-Ghayb and compares it with that of Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabī ( 560 H/ 1149 AD), a mystical interpreter, in his book Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-Karīm. This study shows that there are distinct processes and ways of how the universe commends to God. According to Ibn Arabī, the commendation by the universe is the process of getting annihilation and the unifiction of existence (waḥdah al-wujūd); while al-Rāzī clarifies that the process itself is in metaphoric meaning (majāzi) contingent upon the condition of each part of the universe.

Abstract

There has been a wide presumption that hadith literature authored by Indonesian Muslim scholars is simple and static. This article challenges this view. It examines Miṣbāḥ al-Ẓulām, a commentary of Bulūg al-Marām, by Muhajirin Amsar al-Dari to show the dynamic development of the study on ikhtilāf al-ḥadīth (disputes over hadith). Grounded in the hermeneutic approach, this article argues that the development of hadith studies in Indonesia from time to time is not as simple as the general presupposition entails. This article shows that the development of hadith studies is raised following the provision of studies on ikhtilāf al-ḥadīth. The tradition of writing hadith in Indonesia began in the 17th century and, as a result, a number of hadith literatures have been produced by Indonesian Muslim scholars. This development challenges some scholars’ perception that the studies of hadith in Indonesia remain simple and the science of hadith in the country is hardly available.

Abstract

This paper aims to demonstrate how the adoption of the theory of metaphor by Ricoeur to the “Light Verse” in the Quran. One of the most famous verse in the Quran is “the Light verse.” Beside the metaphor of light, the verse includes the metaphors of “the niche”, of “the lamp”, of “the glass”, and others. The metaphor “God is the Light” is the vital feature of the analysis. The next metaphors in the verse are an extension of that metaphor. The “light” metaphor with its principal meaning as “source” will be analyzed using the theory of metaphor as created by Paul Ricoeur in The Rule of Metaphor (1978). The application of this concept will unfold how this metaphor is employed creatively. It makes a parable of the gradation of lights and contains how it is widened to cover a broader aspect of faith, i.e., being the center and open to accept His light. The result of this experiment with metaphors in the Light verse shows fresh analysis that God illuminates on every creation in all realms.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the Awik-awik originating from the local wisdom of a Muslim community in West Lombok and analyzes its interrelation to Islamic propagation (dakwah). This traditional village norms serve as a guide to the people to deal with the forest. Since Islam promotes the preservation of nature, it then aligns itself with such local wisdom. Based on an ethnogrpahic study in Sesaot village and built on the theory of local wisdom, this study attempts to describe the contain, structure and socialization of the awik-awik when it is reshaped from a traditional norm to a written rule agreed upon by the community members. Substantially, the stipulation of the awik-awik could reinforce Islamic doctrines on natural resource maintenance. Moreover, the ways in which the awik-awik is socialized before being implemented resemble the method of religious propagation. This indicat that Awik-awik could be an effective means of Islamic propagation to provide enlightenment to the community because the material arisen from the local wisdom of local communities reflect important Islamic message on the preservation of environment.

Abstract

Islam does not totally reject values and eculture that preceeded over it or previously existed in a given society when it came later to that society. In contrast, Islam gives high respect to local tradition. The presence of Islam actually improves the living order and and good of local culture by means of accomodation, as this is promoted by “Islam Nusantara”. The contiguity of Islam and local traditions can be seen in various ways across Indonesia. This article examines such encounter of Islam and local tradition in the Hinterland Malay of West Kalimantan. This study explores and identifes local practices where Islam and local values are blended. This study shows that the tradition of Pantang Larang, Perladangan (buma), Berobat Kampung, and Tepung Tawar reflect unique relationship between Islam and local tradition where these two elements are mutually integrated. Islam does not change such traditions but reshape them. The Islamic propagation (dakwah) is not carried out by erasing local tradition but by integrating itself into the traditions, making a strong structure of mutually-enforcing religion and tradition.

As a contemporary reformist Muslim leader, Rahman and Ramadan had made many interpretations of the Qur'an by adapting to the social context of society when the interpretation was made, namely Western society. Their Qur'anic interpretations and their thoughts-whether directly or indirectly-reflect on the circumstances and challenges that Muslims encounter in the West, Europe and the US, today. This paper contributes to the discussion of the meaning of jihad and various attempts at interpretation of the term. Besides, this paper will at least provide an overview of how the face of Islam in the West in the modern era as it is today.
