Ulumuna (P-ISSN: 1411-3457; E-ISSN: 2355-7648), a journal of Islamic studies published twice a year (June and December) by State Islamic University (UIN) of Mataram since 1997, publishes original (library or field) research articles in the field of Islamic studies. It promotes multidisciplinary approaches to Islam and Islamicate societies and focuses on six main topics: (1) the Qur’an and hadith (2) Islamic Law (3) Islamic Theology (Kalam) (4) Islamic Philosophy (5) Islamic Mysticism (Tasawwuf) (6) Islamic Education (7) Islamic Communication and Propogation (Dakwa) and (8) Islamic Politic. All submitted manuscripts are subject to double-blind review process. Ulumuna was admitted as an accredited journal by the Director General of Strengthening Research and Development, Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia in 2017. The accreditation is given through a Director Decree No. 32a/E/KPT/2017 and is effective until 2022. Ulumuna has become a CrossRef Member since year 2015. Therefore, all of its publications have a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number.

Abstract

This paper investigates the Lapindo disaster in East Java that affected religious and social changes over the past two decades. Tens of thousands affected community living in the periphery of urban areas have coped with land disputes. However, religion plays an important role in fostering resilient communities. Instead of medical clinics or hospitals, new worship buildings increased in the Lapindo area. This study demonstrates that the Lapindo case is an example of environmental violence by examining critical analysis on anthropocentrism. Anthropocentrism is derived from scripture, describing humans as the most superior beings. Ecofeminism theory of Islamic perspective is critical instrument to analyze environmental violence. In addition, this research includes the concept of religious moderation that denies environmental perspectives. Given the complex issues of environmental issues in the Indonesian context, religious moderation is merely viewed as a matter of interfaith dialogue on tolerance project, yet ignoring environmental trajectory as part of religious moderation campaign. However, it has rarely been viewed as a bridge to solving social problems, such as environmental crises. The research fingding shows the rise of economic-based social crime, gender-based violence, women and children traficking, as well as poverty.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of religious moderation values in Islamic religious higher education in Garut, West Java. The primary focus of the research includes the integration of religious moderation values in the curriculum, the role of lecturers and education staff, student perceptions, as well as obstacles and challenges in implementing these values. Through a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis at several institutions, including STAI Musadaddiyah, STAI Muhammadiyah Garut, and STAI Siliwangi Garut. The results show that religious moderation is integrated through an Aswaja-based curriculum approach and rahmatan lil 'alamin, with lecturers and education personnel playing the role of facilitators in building tolerant and inclusive student characters. The main obstacles come from the influence of conservative ideologies, limited religious understanding among students, and challenges from social media. Strategies to overcome these obstacles include strengthening the curriculum, digital literacy training, and collaboration with external institutions. The findings are expected to make a positive contribution to the formation of a moderate generation that can apply the values of tolerance and inclusiveness in religious and social life.

Abstract

Kazakhstan, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the acquisition of independence, chose a secular path in religion after seventy years of atheism. The state adopted a secular direction, but society, consisting of a Muslim-majority population, began a natural process of cultural revival – language, history, religion, and traditions – restoring religious values. Islamic education became a way of religious revival, based not only on Islam but also on local culture and Kazakhstan’s policy on religion. Higher Islamic education in Kazakhstan became part of bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral programs (PhD) in Islamic studies. This article examines the formation and development of higher Islamic education in Kazakhstan through the example of the only Islamic university. Quantitative and qualitative indicators from the analysis of the educational program, showing a balance between Islamic, secular, and Kazakh culture-related disciplines, emphasize the possibility of development in this direction, adhering to Islam, secularism, and culture.
