Abstract

Root pruning technique may improve new lateral growth. The purposes of this research are to analyse the combined effect of root pruning and inoculum ectomycorrizal types on the growth of gnetum seedling (Gnetum gnemon). This research using split plot design. The source of ectomycorrizhal inoculum as main plot consist of 3 types: control, infected seedling of ectomycorrhizal, and soil inoculum. The root pruning level as sub plot also consist of 3 types: 0, 30, and 50%. Observation is conducted on month 5th and 6th after treatment. The result of this research indicates that root pruning technique on 7 month seedling able to enhance melinjo seedling’s growth and increase ectomycorrhizal colonization (Scleroderma spp.) after 6 months observation. The source of inoculum was able to enhance ectomyrorrhizal colonization but had no significant to gnetum seedling’s growth on month 6th after treatment. Interaction between root pruning 30% and fungal inoculation with soil inoculum source can improve gnetum seedling growth.

Abstract

Giving a half-dose of an anthelmintic is a simple method for detecting resistance in parasites infesting small ruminants. When a single anthelmintic fails in native sheep from Indonesia, a combination of anthelmintics from different chemical classes with different mechanism of action is an alternative parasite-control strategy. This study compared the anthelmintic effectiveness of ivermectin (IVM) and albendazole (ABZ) have given either separately as a full-dose or half-dose or co-administered to sheep naturally infected with Ostertagia. Twelve sheep from Bogor, Indonesia were divided into six groups based on the anthelmintic treatment: half-dose IVM, full-dose IVM, half-dose ABZ, full-dose ABZ, combined (half-dose IVM + half-dose ABZ), and control groups. The treatment effectiveness was determined using the Faecal egg count reduction (FECR) on before and after 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days of treatment. FECR of half-dose IVM, full-dose IVM, half-dose ABZ, full-dose ABZ, and both combined ranged from 78-100%, 96-100%, -71-89%, -521-64%, and 54-100%, respectively. The results showed that full-dose IVM was the most effective to against Ostertagia until 42 days and followed the combined that effective until 28 days. Half-dose and full-dose ABZ weren’t effective to against Ostertagia.

Abstract

The research on horizontal distribution clorophyll-a fitoplankton as indicator the tropic state in waters of Meulaboh Bay conducted on Mei-July 2014 in Meulaboh Bay. Sampling was done using the method of purposive sampling at 10 sites, which consist of river, mouth river, bay waters, and middle of bay to outer of bay. The purpose of this research is to analyse horizontal distribution of clorophyll-a fitoplankton as the tropic state indicator in the waters and to analyse relationship between clorphyll-a fitoplankton with nutrients availability N and P. The result showed that the horizontal distribution pattern of clorophyll-a fitoplankton dominated by the waters near to teresterial land, likes river, mouth river, and edge of bay, afterward its gradually slightly decrease in the middle of bay and lower in outer of bay. High or low of clorophyll-a was due to the influence of nutirent load N and P in the waters of Meulaboh Bay. The tropic states based on abundance clorophyll-a fitoplankton was categorised in the mesotrofic condition.

Abstract

Sweet potato (Ipomea batatas (L.) Lam.) is one of functional foods that can maintain and improve human health. Due to the very hard texture of red sweet potato, it cannot be consumed directly. Therefore, it requires various cooking methods in order to be more suitable for consumption. This study aimed at determining effects of various cooking methods on the proximate and sensory properties of red sweet potato. The research covers various cooking methods of red sweet potato through boiling, frying, baking, steaming, and one treatment without cooking process (fresh) which was used as a control. The results show that various cooking methods affect almost all testing parameters significantly, except for ash content. Baked red sweet potato has the lowest moisture content (38,75%) and the highest sugar value as sucrose (17,17%). Sensory properties test results show that the most preferred red sweet potato is fried red sweet potato.

Abstract

Tacca (Tacca leontopetaloides) is plant that grows in coastal areas and high salinity, especially in the south coast of West Java. Tacca tubers have high content of carbohydrate, but it also contains some toxic compounds such as: taccaline, β – sitosterol, alcohol cerylic, and steroid sapogenin that are harmful for health. Fermentation on tacca tubers can change amylograph properties and proximate levels of modified tacca flour and reduce it toxic compounds. This study aimed at determining the effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Lactobacillus plantarum B307 fermentation on the proximate levels and amylograph characteristics of modified tacca flour. Moisture and ash content of modified tacca flour still meet the requirements of SNI. Fermentation LAB Lactobacillus plantarum B307 led to increased levels of protein and lactic acid in the modified tacca flour, but it decreased pH value and carbohydrate content. Based on the analysis of amylograph, it can be concluded that tacca flour control without fermentation has the best gelatinization profile because it has good ability of setback viscosity.

Abstract

Beringin (Ficus benjamina Linn.) is one of typical fast growing tree species which are commonly found in Indonesia. The trees grow with hanging roots which grow larger and often can merged with the main stem, then its timber is not optimally utilized. This paper studies the anatomical structure and fiber quality of main stem and large, medium, and small diameter of hanging roots of beringin (Ficus benjamina Linn.) tree. Anatomical structure was observed macroscopically and microscopically, while fiber dimensions were measured from macerated samples. The results show that the anatomical structure pattern of the roots is similar with those of main stem, however the quantity and dimension of anatomical components of hanging roots are smaller and shorter than components of main stem. Likewise, the fiber dimensions of roots are shorter and thinner than those taken from the main stem. Based on fiber dimensions and its derivative value, beringin wood fibers are classified into class quality II for pulp and paper. The creamy white color with white streaky figure of beringin wood from main stem is recommended for indoor decoration products such as wooden venetian blind, while the small roots are recommended for strap or webbing material crafts.
