Abstract

To make students still have a learning process while covid-19 outbreak, the Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, decided that the teaching and learning process should be conducted online rather than face-to-face. The minister of Education and Culture issued Circular Number 4 of 2020 concerning the Implementation of Education in the Emergency Coronavirus (Covid-19). One example of media to teach the online class is Whatsapp Group. This media is implemented in SMA Muhamamdiyah Gadingrejo as an application to teach English online learning. Therefore, in implementing the WhatsApp Group as media to teach online classes, the teacher should be aware of students’ motivation in joining online learning. In this study, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative to investigate the students’ motivation in English online learning during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The instruments used were a questionnaire and an interview. The total participants of this research were 37 tenth-grade students at SMA Muhamamdiyah Gadingrejo. The questionnaire result shows that total means score of extrinsic motivation is higher than instrumental, integrative, and intrinsic motivation. However, the results from the interview show that most students have instrumental motivation. Ultimately, tenth-grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah Gadingrejo have instrumental and extrinsic motivation in joining English online learning in pandemic.

Abstract

Vocabulary plays an important role in learning English. Learning vocabulary in English is not easy, especially for students in vocational high school. In addition, they have special characteristics that are very different from adults. With emphasis on these different characteristics, it can be concluded that teachers who teach vocational learners have a challenging task to be able to motivate them in the learning process. In this case, teachers must be more creative and keep their students away from boredom while learning English vocabulary. They must prepare material to be given to students and also choose appropriate techniques to use. By doing these things, they can make students have a great interest in the learning process. They must be able to choose and use teaching techniques that can make the learning process more fun, interesting, and exciting for students. One such technique is to use games in the classroom. Using games can provide many benefits for teachers and students.This research aimed at identifying students’ improvement on their vocabulary mastery after learning English using game. The participant of this study is students of junior high school in Lampung province. Data gathered through questionnaire. The data then analyzed by using Creswell method. The result shows that using games in learning English vocabulary is very effective, because using games is very fun and matches the characteristics of children as learners.

Abstract

Many EFL students are still having difficulties in learning vocabulary. It is because most of English vocabulary are different in term of written and spoken. To face this facts, EFL students have their way to learn and add their new English words There are many ways to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. One of the ways is through English songs. This research aims to find out students’ thought on their vocabulary mastery using English songs. The researcher used descriptive qualitative study as the research design. The subjects of this research were the 30 students from English Education study program of Faculty of Arts and Education in Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview. From the result of the questionnaire and the interview, it revealed that English songs have strong influence on their English skill. Also, the students think that English songs help them learn new vocabulary, unfamiliar vocabulary, how to pronounce the word correctly. Thus, finally, they can improve their English vocabulary.

Abstract

This study investigated students' listening skills using English songs. The reason for choosing this topic is based on the problem of listening ability. The purpose of this study was to determine the use of English songs to improve students' listening skills. The targets of this study were students in the fifth and seventh semester of the English Education study program in UniversitasTeknokrat Indonesia. 100 students participated in this study. This research method is qualitative. Data collection was carried out by distributing link questionnaires to 100 students who had taken listening courses. The results showed that the progress of students' listening skills mastery during the activity could be seen from the data analysis, the researchers used tabulated data. This result shows that English songs are effective in listening skills.

Abstract

Many instructors and students have used digital comic to enhance their English skills. This research aims to analyze students' perspectives on using digital comic in learning writing skill at the senior high school level. This research employed a qualitative design to gain the data through a questionnaire instrument. The sample of this research was the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Padang Cermin, and 20 students participated in this research. Based on the data result of this study, students had positive feedback toward the use of digital comic to help them develop their multiple English skills and help the students enjoy and increase their interest, especially in learning writing skill of the English language through creating a short English story. As conclusion, the result proved that the use of digital comic could give positive effects on students’ writing skill in eleventh grade. It is also suggested that teachers can apply this learning medium to help them teach writing skill for their students at school.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine about how the attitude of using the memorization strategy towards students' learning activities. This research using a quantitative methods. The sample of this research were 38 students from English Education in a private university. They consist of male and female sixth-semester students. The research instrument in the form of a questionnaire obtained through google form, then the data will be analyzed using SPSS to find out how students' attitudes towards the learning strategy of memorization. The results of this study indicate that the student's attitude towards the memorization learning strategy show a positive attittude, it can be seen from the results of the questionnaire that has been filled out by the participants. According to their responses, the memorization strategy also made it easier for them to absorb lesson information. These findings can be used by teachers or lecturers to apply the memorization strategy as an effective learning strategy for the students.

Abstract

The spread of the Covid-19 virus that has swept across the world has changed various aspects of human life, one of which is the change of learning process that commonly occurs face to face in the classroom become online learning. Online learning is chosen as the solution to keep teaching and learning during this pandemic and this is done by various levels of education starting from primary school, middle school, high school, to college levels. The existence of cases of learning difficulties experienced by students during the Covid-19 pandemic made students do not understand the subject matter delivered by the teacher. This study aimed to find out some solutions of students' problem in the online learning process. Participants in this study were 25 English education students from a private university in Bandar Lampung. The researcher distributed a close ended questionnaire of 9 questions in the form of Google to collect data, and used qualitative data to illustrate the results of the questionnaire in data findings. The results of the study show that there were some problems faced by students in online learning included (1) students difficult to understanding materials, (2) students encounter technical difficulties, (3) limited internet quota, (4) poor communication, and (5) learning becomes less effective. The solutions that researcher has found to overcome the problems are namely (1) teachers or lecturers must implement face to face class twice a week, (2) teachers should use platforms with simpler operations in online learning, (3) teachers or lecturers should provide a material that is interactive, dynamic and attractive and (4) the government must extend the quota assistance for students.

Abstract

As one of Indonesia’s most prominent foreign languages, English is essential in education. The importance of English is reflected in the fact that it is taught from elementary school through university and is even used as a requirement for graduation or employment. Passing the campus-provided English Proficiency Test is a graduation requirement for Teknokrat University students. As a result, learning and mastering English is an important step for students.When it comes to teaching English in the classroom, there are various factors to consider. Every student has their own individuality. Different personalities result in varying levels of comprehension. Students’ personalities vary enormously, yet self-esteem is important in influencing individuals. In short, students’ personalities can differ based on their self-esteem. As a result, students’ personalities are greatly influenced by their sense of self, affecting their learning. This study aimed to see if there is a relationship between undergraduate students’ self-esteem and their English Language proficiency test at Teknokrat University. The computation results show that the correlation coefficient was .454. This study revealed a moderately positive relationship between students’ self-esteem and their EPT scores. Thus, the greater their self-esteem, the better their EPT score.Keywords: English Learning, English Proficiency Test and Self-esteem

Abstract

Nowadays, a wide range of professions around the world employs English as an International Language. Many people learn English to keep up with the worldwide advances in areas like education, technology, tourism, health, and economics. English is widely utilized in many facets of human life. English is additionally necessary for graduation. Students must pass the English proficiency test to graduate from university (EPT). Self-esteem, an essential component of personality, affects people's attitudes and behaviors. Self-esteem is frequently associated with good mental health, effective living, successful learning, and even a good quality of life. How people view themselves, whether favorably or unfavorably, is a measure of their self-esteem. Since self-esteem and academic performance are intertwined, the researchers want to know whether or not students' self-esteem correlates with their level of English proficiency. This study, which involved 38 participants from Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia, used the quantitative method. This study's conclusions showed a connection between students' self-esteem and their EPT score. The researchers conclude that students' self-esteem did have an impact on their EPT score, i.e., the greater their self-esteem, the higher their EPT score.

Abstract

The number of schoolchildren fluent in English has increased significantly over the past decade. The amount of English lessons per week is one explanation, but media influence is perhaps even more important. Video games are massively marketed to college students. In this study, a survey was conducted to examine the relationship between playing video games and English proficiency. Many students responded to the survey. This included a range of questions about how often and how well video games are played. Researcherss have concluded that video games have a significant impact on language acquisition. Vocabulary and pronunciation were the most helpful areas. Video games are a highly rewarding pastime and create a comfortable and stimulating environment perfect for learning a foreign language.
