Abstract

Background: Knowledge of nutrition and adherence to diet affects the healing process and health status of individuals with diabetes mellitus. Objectives: To determine the level of nutritional knowledge and dietary compliance of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive study design and was conducted at a community health center in the Gorontalo City area from March to August 2024. Purposive sampling of 141 respondents was conducted. Diet adherence was measured using the Perceived Dietary Adherence Questionnaire (PDAQ), whereas knowledge was assessed using the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ), which was analyzed using descriptive frequency. Results: The results of the knowledge measurement study show that 36,2% of the participants had low knowledge, while 78,7% had a low level of compliance. The PDAQ analysis showed the highest score regarding compliance in fish consumption (score=6,5±1,1), while the lowest score pertained to compliance in the selection and use of healthy oils (olive oil and organic oil) (0,3±1,2).Conclusion: A low level of knowledge can affect the dietary compliance of patients with DM.

Abstract

Background: HIV/AIDS remains a significant global health issue, prompting community meetings to promote Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) clinics in Langsa City. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of illness and Islamic Sharia values regarding interest in using VCT services. Methods: This study was a mix-method approach with concurrenct triangulation in Bungoeng Tulip VCT Clinic, Langsa City Regional Hospital.  This six-months involved 42 participants, including health workers and religious leaders. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods used content analysis techniques.Result: The results showed that Informants' view of threat and severity of the disease have an impact on their interest in using VCT services. Additionally, mass media and health worker promotions significantly influence user participation in VCT. However, perceptions of disease severity and islamic values did not affect informant decisions to utilize these services in Langsa. Conclusion: Most respondents had a positive perception of the disease and Islamic values concerning VCT services. Nonetheless, perception of disease severity and Islamic law did not significantly influence the utilization of VCT clinic. It is recommended to develop and promote targeted health education initiatives that focus on awareness of disease severity and the importance of utilizing VCT services.

Abstract

Background: Pain caused by surgical wounds causes discomfort and stress in children, so measures are needed to reduce it. Brain gyms can reduce pain because the movements can increase blood flow and stretch the nerve muscles. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of brain gym on pain levels during surgical wound care in children. Methods: This study used a quantitative design of the quasi-experimental method with a one-group pre- and post-test without control. This study was conducted in the pediatric room of Meuraxa Hospital Banda Aceh on 22 children undergoing surgical wound care (total sampling) on June 2 – August 30, 2022. The intervention was carried out by playing brain gym videos and asking children to follow the movements in the video when children were treated with surgical wounds. The instrument used the Faces Pain Rating Scale. Data analysis used a paired T test statistical test with a significance level of 0,05 and 95% confidence level. Results: The results of this study showed that the most pain levels before the intervention were at the severe pain level, namely 12 people (54,5%), and the pain level after the intervention was at moderate pain, totaling 16 people (72,8%). The results of the analysis showed a significant difference in pain before and after the brain gym (p<0,05).Conclusion: Brain gym can reduce pain in children who are undergoing surgical wound care.

Abstract

Background: Red guava, dragon fruit, and pineapple contain fiber and bioactive compounds that help lower cholesterol. Yoghurt with lactic acid bacteria also contributes to lowering cholesterol levels through biological mechanisms. Objectives: To assess the impact of fruit juice and pineapple yoghurt on reducing cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemic pre-elderly patients. Methods: This pre-experimental study used a Randomized Block Design (RAK), dividing 30 participants into three groups: P0 (control), P1 (nutrition education and fruit juice), and P2 (nutrition education and pineapple yoghurt). The intervention lasted seven days, and cholesterol levels were measured before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Kruskal-Walli’s test. Results: Participants were predominantly aged 51-59 years (60%), female (86,7%), and had high school education (86,7%). Pre-intervention cholesterol levels averaged 235 mg/dl (P0), 247 mg/dl (P1), and 253 mg/dl (P2). Post-intervention levels were 229 mg/dl (P0), 221 mg/dl (P1), and 224 mg/dl (P2). The Kruskal-Walli’s test showed no significant difference in cholesterol levels between the groups (pre p = 0,325, post p = 0,855).Conclusion: While cholesterol levels decreased slightly in all groups, the intervention showed no statistically significant effect.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is condition of a person with hemoglobin value < 12 mg/dl. Moringa leaves are a soft woody plant with the term The Miracle Tree due to its abundant nutritional content and health benefits. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the relationship of Moringa leaf extract in increasing hemoglobin values in adolescent girls. Methods: Systematic Literature Review research with PRISMA guidelines conducted in July-September 2024. Scientific literature was obtained from SpringerLink, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases with inclusion criteria of full text, published < last 5 years, sample of adolescent girls, and experimental research using pre-posttest. A total of 10 scientific literatures were selected based on keywords in Indonesian and English, namely “Moringa leaves and anemia” OR “Moringa leaves and adolescent girls” OR “Moringa oleifera and adolescent girls” OR “Moringa leaves and hemoglobin” OR “Moringa oleifera and hemoglobin” OR “hemoglobin and adolescent girls”.Results: This study presents that consumption of Moringa leaf extract is proven to increase hemoglobin values in adolescent girls with the highest increase of +4,273 g/dl when consuming 500mg moringa capsules for 14 days. Meanwhile, the lowest increase in hemoglobin value was evident when consuming chicken dim sum made from moringa flour with an increase of 0,44 g/dl.Conclusion: Moringa leaf extract intervention is proven to increase hemoglobin values in adolescent girls. Hopefully, this research can be used as a guideline for making functional food innovations to prevent anemia.

Abstract

Background: Toddlers’ protein intake is still less than the nutritional adequacy figure, due to non-diverse eating habits. Children often have unhealthy eating habits, such as limiting food consumption to only one type of food, which can result in malnutrition. Objectives: The aim of the research was to analyze the relationship between protein intake and food diversity with the incidence of underweight in toddlers aged 12-59 months in Bima Regency. Methods: This study employed an analytic observational research design with a cross-sectional approach. This research was conducted in Bima regency in May-June 2024. We simultaneously sampled 101 toddlers aged 12 to 59 months at a single point in time. The assessment of protein intake and food diversity was conducted using the semi quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). The SQ-FFQ interviews generated direct scores for the individual dietary diversity score (IDDS) based on nine food groups, and underweight nutritional status was measured using a digital weighing scale. Data analized used the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. Results: Among the toddlers, 78,2% of those classified as underweight had insufficient protein intake, and 75,9% consumed a non-diverse diet (less than 5 types of food groups). There were significant association between protein intake and underweight status (p-value = 0,000); as well as between food diversity and underweight status (p-value = 0,001).Conclusion: the nutritional status of toddlers aged 12-59 months in Bima Regency is significantly related to protein intake and food diversity.
