Abstract

SMTPI is a form of formal church education that also serves as a platform for Christian Religious Education services for children. At SMTPI, children have the opportunity to learn and receive various teachings. One of the primary goals of Christian Religious Education (CRE) at SMTPI is character building, a process where children undergo changes in inner attitudes that influence their thoughts, behavior, character, and overall human nature. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that influence the character-building of SMTPI children at the pre-adolescent level and to evaluate how SMTPI contributes to their character-building, viewed from the perspective of CRE. Based on analysis conducted through observation, interviews, and literature review, two key factors are identified as influencing children’s character building: internal and external factors. Additionally, SMTPI contributes significantly to character building by employing various creative and innovative teaching methods in its learning process. These methods help reduce children’s boredom while studying, making it easier for them to grasp the meanings and messages conveyed by caregivers. This approach ensures that children experience a process of character building that aligns with Christian values, fostering the formation of better character traits by Christian principles.

Abstract

In the 21st century, national education required to reformulate its learning system to optimally meet the demands of students' thinking skills. However, assessments of Indonesian students' abilities in mathematics, science, literacy, and numeracy remained relatively low. To address this gap, students required teachers with strong pedagogical competence to help them improve their 21st-century thinking skills. This research aimed to examine the role of Christian teachers as facilitators in developing such skills. Their pedagogical responsibilities included guiding students toward learning that met student’s thinking needs, implementing problem-based learning, integrating technology in line with Christian values, and providing constructive feedback on students' thinking development. Christian teachers also needed to recognize sin as a human reality and understand the restoration of human's relationship with God through redemption, ensuring that educational practices remained untainted by secular postmodern philosophies. The author suggested that problem-based learning methods be explored to help students cultivate the thinking skills essential for the 21st century.

Abstract

This writing is driven by the increasing cases of human trafficking in Sumba, a serious crime against humanity and a violation of human rights. Many men and women working abroad, along with numerous women and children, have fallen victim to trafficking, where they are exploited without fair wages or forced into sexual labor. In recent years, many victims of trafficking have returned home with missing organs, or worse, have lost their lives. The author believes that the church must take action by raising awareness and resistance through transformative Christian education. Thus, this writing aims to analyze how transformative Christian education can play a role in combating human trafficking. The research is based on a qualitative methodology, using data collection methods such as literature review, observation, and interviews. The findings indicate that Christian education within the church has yet to address human trafficking, as it currently focuses solely on worship services. The author suggests that Christian education in congregations should be re-evaluated to include topics related to human trafficking. The Christian educational content should not only be drawn from the Bible but also from real-world experiences and social issues like human trafficking that affect the community. The goal of Christian education should be to inspire transformation and change within the congregation

Abstract

Attention given to children from the womb plays a vital role in supporting their physical and character development. The Karo tribe has a seven-month pregnancy tradition called ngembah manuk mbur, which aims to provide care and attention to pregnant mothers and their unborn children. However, this tradition remains limited in terms of fulfilling the rights of unborn children. Therefore, this study aims to reinterpret such tradition in the light of a biblical-theological context and within the framework of a Child-Friendly Church that it can serve as a foundation for child-friendly Christian education in the context of Karo community. The study employs a qualitative method with a literature review to explore the concept of the ngembah manuk mbur tradition and the concept of a Child-Friendly Church. These concepts serve as analytical tools to examine the implementation of such tradition. The findings indicate that reconstructing the tradition based on biblical-pedagogical principles and within the framework of a Child-Friendly Church can transform it into a foundation for child-friendly education within the Karo community. Traditionally, ngembah manuk mbur is conducted to strengthen pregnant mothers and is only performed for first-born children. This study proposes three key reconstructions of the tradition: it should be performed for all children, it should be carried out throughout the mother's pregnancy, and it should serve as a way for all family members to welcome the child into the family.

Abstract

This article explores the contradictions in parenting role principles between Karo culture and the teachings of the Batak Karo Protestant Church (GBKP). Employing a qualitative method with a literature review approach, the research examines gender roles in parenting through the lens of Karo cultural perspectives and GBKP doctrines. The analysis reveals significant differences in the emphasis on gender roles, posing challenges for Christian Karo families in harmonizing parenting practices with both cultural values and religious teachings. The research recommends a pedagogical approach that balances the roles of fathers and mothers to foster harmonious and holistic parenting. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed to develop a more inclusive Christian family education model.
