Abstract

Palm empty fruit bunches is about of 23% of total fresh fruit bunches, which are rich in lignocellulosic(cellulose, hemycellulose and lignin) content. The bunches can be converted into flammable gases (H2, CO andCH4) by pyrolysis. The objective of this research was to characterize gases produced from palm empty fruitbunch pyrolisis using a laboratory scale reactor with capacity of 152.9 g. The pyrolysis temperature was set at200oC, 250oC, 300oC, 350oC, 400oC and 450oC. The results showed an increase in the mass fraction of H2 andCH4 gas, but decrease of CO gas, by increasing pyrolysis temperature. The highest caloric value of gas wasobtained at temperature of 450oC, which was 6,7682 kJ/g. The result also showed that pyrolysis of empty fruitbunches should be at temperature of 250oC or higher to obtain the flammable gas. Keywords: empty fruit bunches, pyrolysis, flammable gas

Abstract

Enzymatic and acid microwave-assisted hydrolysis of a newly combined biological and microwavepretreatment was developed to evaluate the reducing sugar yield of betung bamboo fibers. In previous parallelstudy of single (biological or microwave) pretreatment, the improvement of reducing sugar yield of microwaveassistedacid hydrolysis has been reported previously. The cellulase of 10 and 20 FPU/g substrate was appliedin the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated biomass using a shaking incubator at 50°C and 150 rpm for 48 hours. In the microwave-assisted acid hydrolysis, 1.0% sulfuric acid concentration was used either with or without theactivated carbon aditionat microwave hydrolysisat 330 watt for 7.5-12.5 minutes. There was an improvement inreducing sugar yield of bamboo pretreated biological-microwave pretreatment after microwave assisted-acidhydrolysis compared to enzymatic hydrolysis. This hydrolysis performance improvement was greater than that ofthe single pretreatment (biological or microwave pretreatment). Bamboo pretreated by biological-microwavepretreatment (5% inoculum loading and irradiated for 5 minutes at 330 W) showed the highest reducing sugaryield after microwave hydrolysis for 12.5 minutes (16.65% per dry biomass or 18.92% per dry substrate). Asmuch as 27.21% of hollocellulose can be converted to reducing sugar or 23.84% of theoritical maximumreducing sugar yield. The benefical effect of activated carbon addition in microwave assisted acid hydrolysiswas the reduction of brown compound even though oligomer adsorption caused the decreasing of reducing sugaryield. Keywords: betung bamboo, brown compound, combination of biological and microwave pretreatment, enzymaticand acid-microwave hydrolysis, reducing sugar yield

Abstract

*Penulis untuk korespondensiTiwul is a traditional food (rather chewy, sticky cooked rice-like food made of cassava flour) that is low in protein content and generally has inferior physical characteristics.  The aim of this research was to improve the tiwul quality especially its protein content by formulating instant tiwul using cereal germs flours (corn and wheat) and soy protein concentrate.  The result showed that instant tiwul made of cassava flour-wheat germ flour of 70:30 w/w and soy protein of 3% w/w was higher in protein content than that of cassava flour-corn germ flour in the same proportions, i.e. 11.17 and 5.81%, respectively.  Without soy protein addition, their protein contents were 8.44 and 3.89%, respectively, where as instant tiwul made of 100% cassava flour contained protein of 1.20%. The two substituted instant tiwul had high coefficient of rehydrations, their respective values were 3 - 5 and 2 – 3. Their cooking times were only 8-10 minutes, in comparison to traditional tiwul of 30 minutes. For eliminating of cereal germs flours off-flavors, it was conducted by dipping cereal germs in 2.5% NaCl boiling solution for 3 minutes. In general, their sensory characteristics of cooked instant tiwul were good in texture, flavour, aroma, and colour. Keywords: cassava flour, corn germ flour, instant tiwul, soy protein concentrate, wheat germ flour
