Abstract

Peatlands are fragile, so their use must be carefully managed to prevent land degradation and ecosystem damage. Currently, peatlands in Batang Duku Village, Bukit Batu Subdistrict, Bengkalis Regency, Riau, have been utilized for various land uses, but it is not yet known which land areas are not degraded. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether the peatland use in the research location has been degraded or not This research was conducted using a survey method. The research location was determined through purposive sampling, while the sampling points were selected using systematic sampling. In this study, there are four types of peatland use: horticulture, oil palm plantations, rubber plantations, and shrubland, with three observation points established for each land use. Peatland degradation was assessed using a comparative method. The results of the peatland degradation analysis for the four land uses in Batang Duku, Bukit Batu, Bengkalis, Riau, indicate that, according to PP No. 71/2014 and PP No. 57/2016, the peatlands are classified as degraded. Similarly, according to PP No. 150/2000, the peatlands are also classified as degraded. However, when the degradation analysis refers to BBSDLP (2018), the peatlands are classified as not degraded (very heavy category).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the current state of solid medical waste management in Community Health Centers in Pekanbaru City from ecological, economic, and social perspectives, and to design a solid medical waste management model based on the SI MOLI (Waste Monitoring Application) concept. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving a sample of all 21 Community Health Centers (Puskesmas) in Pekanbaru City. The findings indicate that most of these centers have sufficient human resources and all have policies or Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in place for managing solid medical waste. However, while the centers have implemented waste sorting, their infrastructure remains inadequate, and temporary waste storage facilities are still not fully compliant with safety standards. Despite these challenges, part of the Community Health Centers' environmental health programs have successfully managed solid medical waste. The results of the bivariate analysis show a significant relationship (p-value less than 0.05) between human resources, policies/SOPs, infrastructure, waste sorting, temporary storage, and the overall waste management effectiveness in these centers. The proposed solid medical waste management model for Pekanbaru’s Community Health Centers incorporates the SI MOLI system. Given that nearly all centers generate more waste than their storage capacities can handle, the SI MOLI application is a timely and essential tool. This study recommends SI MOLI as a synthesis of empirical findings and existing theories and concepts from previous research to enhance waste management practices.

Abstract

The Sosa River in Padang Lawas, North Sumatra, is facing pollution from domestic waste and industrial activities. Its water quality has declined, with a Water Quality Index of 58.75% in 2022, indicating a moderate condition. The community directly disposes of waste into the river, exacerbating the ecosystem's deterioration. This study aims to evaluate and analyze the water quality conditions of the Sosa River and the social and economic activities of the Padang Lawas community, determine the pollution load and water quality status. he existing condition of the Sosa River water quality still has several parameters that exceed the quality standards in accordance with applicable regulations. The Sosa River water quality status at the research location is classified as meeting quality standards to moderately polluted. The location that has a moderate pollutant index is point 2 of the Sosa River tributary  (representing the outfall of the Sosa River tributary in Aliaga Village). while other research locations are classified as lightly polluted and some meet quality standards.

Abstract

Communal IPAL is a sanitation infrastructure in the form of a building that is used to process community waste which is used communally. Communities play an important role in communal wastewater treatment plants (IPAL) because they are the users and owners of the wastewater sources that must be treated. This research aims to analyze the factors that influence Community Participation in the management of Communal Waste Water Treatment Plants (IPAL) in Kampar Regency. This research is quantitative with an analytical cross-sectional study design (Analytical Cross Sectional Study). The data in this research is primary data obtained by distributing questionnaires. The variables studied were the dependent variable (community participation in managing the Communal IPAL) and the independent variable (knowledge, education, economy and government support). The research results show that there is a significant relationship between economic knowledge (Pvalue 0.002) and government support (Pvalue 0.02) with community participation in the management of Communal IPAL in Kampar Regency. and there is no relationship between education and community participation in the management of Communal IPAL in Kampar Regency (Pvalue 0.069). It is hoped that the community can actively participate in the operation and maintenance of the communal IPAL and that the government will always accompany the community using the communal IPAL in operational and maintenance activities.

Abstract

Siak Regency is one of rice production center in Riau Province, yet it faces growing threats from drought due to climate change and variability. This study assesses agricultural drought vulnerability in Siak Regency in 2023 and proposes mitigation strategies using climate information. The analysis focused on drought impacts on agricultural land across four sub-districts: Sungai Mandau, Bunga Raya, Sabak Auh, and Sungai Apit. Agricultural drought vulnerability was determined by combining Oldeman climate classification data and groundwater availability. Mitigation strategies were developed using SWOT analysis. The results reveal that drought vulnerability in Siak Regency peaked between July and October 2023, resulting in reduced crop yields and shifts in the planting calendar. Based on the SWOT analysis, an S-O (Strengths-Opportunities) approach was recommended, prioritizing the use of existing strengths and available opportunities. Suggested strategies include drought mitigation outreach and training for farmers, collaboration with national and local media, as well as the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, stockpiling rice during wet months to prevent shortages, and enforcing local regulations to protect traditional practices, such as preserving customary forests. In conclusion, Siak’s agricultural drought mitigation strategies highlight the importance of using climate information, strengthening farmer resilience, and preserving traditional agricultural practices.
