Abstract

AbstractSail River is one of the Siak watersheds which has high TSS levels. This study aims to determine the decrease in TSS levels using the different density of biorafia (plastic rope that functions as a filter). This research was conducted on the Sail River, from March to April 2019. The method used was CRD with 3 different biorafia densities: P1 (low density), P2 (medium density) and P3 (high density), with 3 replications. Sampling is done before passing the biorafia (inlet) and after passing through the biorafia (outlet). The highest reduction in TSS levels was found at moderate density (190 mg / L) with a decrease in effectiveness (EP) of 96,9%. The density of different biorafia does not significantly influence the decrease in TSS levels in the Sail River water. Keywords : Biocord, Biorafia, Suspended Solid and Bacteria

Abstract

ABSTRACT The Sail River has been contaminated with nitrate can be reduced by using biorafia (interweaving of several raffia knot masks that are mashed with shapes resembling duster as a place to attach to microorganisms). This study aimed to determine the effect of the density of biorafia in reducing levels of nitrate contained in the water of the Sail River. The study was conducted in March-April 2019 on the Sail River. This study uses a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a single factor, namely biorafia. Using three treatments, namely different densities (P1 = infrequent / 50simple, P2 = moderate / 75impul and P3 = meeting / 100impul), and three replications. Sampling was carried out before and after passing biorafia on artificial trenches with a one-month interval. The results showed that biorafia was able to reduce the levels of nitrate with a decrease in average not much different. The decrease in nitrate ranges from 0.1375-0.33473 mg / L to 0.0750-0.1167 mg / L (35-44%). Biorafia can be used in reducing levels of nitrate. Keywords: Biorafia, Nitrate, raffia

Abstract

Liquid waste from rubber industry is one of environmental issues that shall be handled as it is commonly discharged and potentially contaminate aquatic environment. This waste contain high organic materials and it need to be processed. To understand the effectiveness of combination of used plastic biofilter media and emergent aquatic plant for remediation of that waste, a study has been conducted from January to March 2015. The waste was processed through used plastic biofilter media and then flown to phytoremediation unit that was completed with Limmnocharis flava and Echinodorus palaefoliu. There were 2 sets of processor and each set contain a biofilter and a phytoremediation unit. The processed waste was then used to rear Cyprinus carpio, Pangasius pangasius and Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings, 20 fishes/ aquarium. Water samplings were conducted 3 times, once/ 2 weeks. The water was sampled from the inlet and in the outlets of each biofilter and phytoremediation unit. Survival rate of the fish by the end of the research was noted. Results shown that the use of used plastic biofilter media and emergent plant phytoremediation process was effective to reduce the organic pollutant. Before being treated, the TSS and Ammonia were 538 mg/L and 28 mg/L respectively. After being treated, the TSS reduced into 32 mg/L and the Ammonia reduced into 7 mg/L. The effectiveness of the processor was 94% for the TSS and 75% for the Ammonia. By the end of the research, survival rate of the fish was ranged from 90%- 100%. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that the use of used plastic and emergent plant processor is effective for reducing organic materials in the rubber industry liquid waste.Keyword : Used plastic, Limmnocharis flava, Echinodorus palaefoliu, rubber industry liquid waste
