Abstract

Although famous as a favorite junior high school, mathematics is still a scourge for most students of SMPN 1 Madiun. As a result, students' mathematics learning achievement does not meet the KKM. The group investigation learning model is one alternative to improve student learning achievement. Classroom action research with the stages of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting on each cycle is used to improve this situation. Planning is carried out according to the results of the identification and reflection of the previous cycle. Implementation according to plan. Observations are emphasized on the implementation of learning, increasing learning achievement, and student responses. Reflections are made to make the necessary improvements so that learning objectives are achieved. The results showed that students have positive attitudes and responses to mathematics learning with the group investigation model on the subject of Social Arithmetic. Mathematics learning achievement of students of class VII B of SMP Negeri 1 in 2018/2019 in the subject of Social Arithmetic by using a group investigation model increased with an average value of 81.5 so that it was categorized quite well. Teachers can use the group investigation model as an alternative to improving students' mathematics learning achievement.

Abstract

Research has shown that using graphic novels in the classroom is one of useful approaches to promote the understanding of learners especially for lengthy and difficult literature texts. This study reports the extent of graphic novel in facilitating students’ understanding of literature and the students’ perceptions towards using graphic novel in learning literature (L2) as compared to other genre of texts. This is a mixed method study which employs quantitative and qualitative methods to obtain data. The findings indicate that most students found that graphic novel helped them to enrich their vocabularies and understand the text better. The findings also reveal that students were attracted to the illustrations in the literature text in which this helps to boost their motivation to learn literature in the classroom. The findings provide useful insights for English as Second Language (ESL) teachers in incorporating and expanding the literature learning through graphic novels in the future. The findings also imply the need of ESL teachers to use graphic novels effectively in facilitating their teaching and learning of literature in L2 classrooms particularly to suit the 21st century teaching and learning.

Abstract

Literary texts create imaginary or figured worlds which might engage readers. Readers engaging in imaginary or figured worlds may develop new identities. Even though readers engage in the literary texts directly, they also have indirect relationship with authors in this process. This paper draws on some influential theories such as reader response, figured worlds, and identity theories. The interaction between reader and text is dialogic; the meaning of a text depends on the transaction between readers and the text they read. On the readers’ part, they always bring their history-in-person. This influences the meaning of the text. In the end, the act of reading is an act of identity making or remaking in figured worlds. Readers shape and reshape their identity in both real and imaginary worlds

Abstract

There have been plenty of studies on translation accuracy, but that focusing on cultural words under-investigated. The current study investigated the translation accuracy of The Maze Runner Novel in English by James Dashner into Indonesian by Yunita Candra.  As many as 11 cultural words were collected. To measure the accuracy, questionnaires were distributed to 12 translators of at least 1 year of professional experience.  The taxonomy developed by Pelawi (2014) covering categories of accurate (Ak), less accurate (KAk), and not accurate (TAk) was applied. Results show that (Ak) occurs 7/64%, (KAk) does 3/27%, and (TAk) does 1/9%. That a number of the data fall into the category of (KAk) and (TAk) indicate that while cultures share common features (universal), at the same time they contain characteristic features that are unique. It goes, therefore, no cultural expressions can be in total accuracy if they are transplanted into other cultures.

Abstract

Anxiety during a speaking performance is a common phenomenon experienced by any EFL learners, including students majoring in English. Focusing on the issue, this study investigates the correlation between students’ foreign language speaking anxiety and speaking achievement. Moreover, this study also observes the levels and the sources of the speaking anxiety among the English Department’s fifth-semester students of Universitas Airlangga. This study used the Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (FLSAS) by Öztürk and Gurbuz (2014). The FLSAS questionnaire was distributed to 114 students in order to explore the correlation between speaking anxiety and speaking achievement, the speaking anxiety levels, and the speaking anxiety sources. The data collected through questionnaire were analyzed with SPSS 25.0. Pearson Product Moment Correlation isused to determine the correlation, while descriptive statistic alanalys is isused to investigate the levels and the sources for speaking anxiety. Horwitz, Horwitzand Cope’s(1986) theory and Horwitz and Young (1991) about the source and the levels of foreign language speaking anxiety are also used in this study. This study found that there is a significant negative correlation between speaking anxiety levels and speaking achievement. This means the higher the speaking anxiety they experience, the lower the achievement score they get. Most of the students have moderate levels of speaking anxiety, which is mainly due to the fear of negative evaluation. This study indicates that although the EFL learners are often exposed to English, they still experience speaking anxiety. These findings suggest that the lecturers should be more aware of students’ anxiety and use strategies that might encourage the students to speak more confidently.
