Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of interfaith encounters on religious tolerance among students of STFT INTIM Makassar. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 42 students who had participated in interfaith activities. Regression analysis results show that interfaith encounters contribute 13.3% to the development of tolerant attitudes. The findings indicate a positive and significant relationship between the intensity of participation in interfaith activities and students' tolerance toward religious diversity. Thus, interfaith engagement proves to be an effective means of fostering mutual respect and strengthening relationships among adherents of different religions. This study contributes significantly to the development of educational programs that promote the values of pluralism, multiculturalism, and social harmony.

Abstract

Mosques, as places of worship and sanctification, transcend its role as mere places of worship. This study examines the impact of practical political intervention on the theological and sanctity dimensions of mosques in Indonesia. This is a qualitative study oriented towards literature review. The focus of the study is to understand how political intervention can affect the function and image of mosques as centres of religious activity. It was found that mosques do not only function from a theological perspective but also as centres for social activities. However, the sanctity of the theological dimension of mosques is often threatened by practical political interventions that can lead to deviations from the primary purpose of mosques as sacred places. Practical politics manifests itself in efforts to control politics through mosques, such as covert campaigns through religious activities, social assistance, and political mobilisation within Muslim communities. The shift in the function of mosques to become places of practical politics is a worrying phenomenon, obscuring the main purpose of mosques as sacred places and centres of spirituality for Muslims. Therefore, the politicisation of mosques in Indonesia requires a more prudent and sensitive understanding, particularly to preserve the sanctity of mosques as pure entities, free from political interference that could undermine social harmony and diminish the sacredness of religion.

Abstract

Middle adulthood (ages 41-60) is a critical transitional stage in human life marked by physical, psychosocial, and cognitive changes. This article provides a comprehensive overview of biological transformations such as muscle mass decline, hormonal shifts, and gradual organ function deterioration, all of which significantly impact quality of life. It also addresses psychosocial challenges including identity crises, the pressures of being part of the “sandwich generation,” marital conflicts, and mental health issues. Cognitively, this stage offers potential for growth in critical, logical, and integrative thinking, supported by accumulated life experience. A multidisciplinary approach, including Islamic perspectives, is employed to offer a holistic understanding of this life phase. The article further outlines adaptive strategies to support individuals during middle adulthood, such as regular physical activity, cognitive training, social engagement, and spiritual development. With appropriate understanding and support, middle adulthood can become a meaningful and productive period of life.

Abstract

Religious moderation is a religious approach that emphasizes moderation, tolerance, and respect for differences. In the world of education, this approach is important for shaping the character of students who are peaceful and inclusive. The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia has responded to the challenges of intolerance and radicalism by introducing the idea of the Love Curriculum, an approach that integrates the values of love into the learning process. This curriculum is based on four main pillars: love for God, fellow human beings, the environment, and the homeland. Not as a new subject, the Love Curriculum is designed to incorporate values of love into all subjects and interactions within the educational environment. This article uses a literature review approach to educational policies, religious writings, and academic research findings to analyze how the Love Curriculum can serve as a preventive strategy against radicalism. The review results indicate that internalizing the value of love in the curriculum has the potential to create a peaceful school culture, strengthen national identity, and minimize religious exclusivity. However, implementing the Love Curriculum requires teacher readiness, adequate training, and support from a harmonious educational ecosystem. Thus, the Love Curriculum is an important innovation in strengthening religious moderation in Indonesian education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of Ibn Arabi's concept of wahdat al-wujud (the unity of being) within the context of contemporary Indonesian Sufism, particularly in response to the challenges of religious pluralism. Employing a qualitative approach and case study method, the research explores how the metaphysical doctrine developed by Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi (1165-1240 CE) has been adapted by modern Indonesian Sufi figures to address the complexities of religious life in the modern era. Data were collected through textual analysis, in-depth interviews with leaders of Sufi orders, and observation of spiritual practices in various pesantren and zawiyah. The findings reveal that wahdat al-wujud has undergone significant reinterpretation, with a particular emphasis on values of tolerance, inclusivity, and interreligious coexistence, while still upholding core Islamic theological principles. This transformation reflects Sufism's capacity to respond to local socio-cultural changes while preserving its spiritual depth. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the flexibility of classical Sufi teachings in modern contexts and offers a fresh perspective on the role of Sufism in fostering religious harmony and tolerance within Indonesia's pluralistic society.

Abstract

Indigenous religion studies, particularly Arat Sabulungan in Mentawai, are dominated by the world religion paradigm, resulting in biased representations labeled "primitive," "animistic," or "syncretic." This paradigmatic bias not only hinders productive studies of indigenous religion but also obscures the ecological wisdom within their worldview. Amid the global ecological crisis, a new perspective on human-nature relations is needed, one that transcends the anthropocentric view that currently dominates religious discourse. This study aims to explore the worldview of the Mentawai indigenous religion regarding ecological relations and reconstruct ecological understanding from the perspective of the indigenous religion paradigm, specifically examining how rituals in Arat Sabulungan manifest the intersubjective relations between humans, nature, and spiritual entities. The study employs a humanistic approach, incorporating in-depth observations of Arat Sabulungan practices, with a focus on three main rituals: the sikerei healing ritual, the construction of uma, and the raising of pigs. Data are analyzed through the framework of the indigenous religion paradigm and the concept of worldview. Arat Sabulungan offers an understanding of intersubjective relations, different from the hierarchical relations of the world religion paradigm. Humans, nature, and spiritual entities are viewed as subjects possessing agency and consciousness. Healing rituals, the construction of uma, and the raising of pigs demonstrate a profound ecological awareness that manifests the reciprocal relationship between humans and nature. Epistemologically, this research offers an alternative paradigm for the study of indigenous religion. Theoretically, it enriches discussions of the role of religion in the ecological crisis by offering a cosmocentric perspective. Practically, the ecological awareness of Arat Sabulungan can inspire collective efforts to address the contemporary ecological crisis.
