Abstract

Abstract

Bedetan Perancak is an innovative sardine processing product (cat sardine and protolan types) made by the Bedetan Perancak Women Farmers Group (KWT) in Jembrana Regency. It is dried using an eco-friendly Solar Dryer Dome (SDD) technology with a capacity of 200 kg per 3 days. This study compares the nutritional content of two Bedetan variants—unseasoned and seasoned—both dried using SDD. The analysis covers moisture, ash, protein, fat, carbohydrates (by difference), and estimated energy (kcal). Results indicate that moisture and ash are higher in the seasoned variant at 11.38% and 7.23%, respectively. Protein content is high in both variants: 62.89% (unseasoned) and 63.81% (seasoned). Fat content is similar, ranging between 15.03% and 15.13%. Carbohydrates are higher in the unseasoned variant (5.89%) than in the seasoned one (2.54%). Energy values are 411.30 kcal (unseasoned) and 400.70 kcal (seasoned). Adding seasoning affects moisture and ash but not protein and fat significantly. Both variants meet the SNI 8273:2023 standard for dried fish moisture (max 40%; ideal 15–20%), with moisture well below ideal limits. This shows that SDD technology is environmentally friendly and enhances nutritional quality and shelf life of Bedetan.

Abstract

Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is one of Indonesia’s leading fishery commodities, with high potential as a raw material for fish oil, especially from the eye tissue, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. This study aimed to evaluate the heavy metal content in yellowfin tuna eyes from Aceh waters to ensure the safety of extracted fish oil. Eye samples were obtained as by-products from a tuna fillet processing industry in Banda Aceh. Preparations were carried out by separating soft tissues from hard parts, followed by oil extraction using the cold water extraction method. Characterization included morphometric analysis and determination of heavy metal contents (Hg, Pb, Cd, As) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), based on national (SNI) and international (Codex Alimentarius 2017) standards. Results showed that Hg, Pb, and Cd were not detected, while As was present at a concentration of <0.005 mg/kg—well below safety thresholds. These findings indicate that yellowfin tuna eye oil from Aceh is safe for consumption and holds promising potential as a high-value functional food or dietary supplement ingredient.

Abstract

The transition of Saccharina japonica var. ochotensis (Rishiri Kombu) from its first to second year of growth is crucial for commercial harvest. However, recent increases in seawater temperature and nutrient depletion are likely to influence this process. This study investigates the influence of autumn seawater temperature and nitrate concentrations on the second-year transition rate of Rishiri Kombu in northern Hokkaido. Field surveys were conducted from 2020 to 2024 at Ishikari and Rebun, where the population densities of first- and second-year individuals were quantified. Concurrently, in situ measurements of seawater temperature and nitrate concentrations were performed during autumn. The results indicate that higher seawater temperatures tend to be associated with lower second-year transition rates, whereas increased nitrate concentrations positively correlate with transition success. Statistical analyses suggest that nutrient availability has a stronger influence on transition rates than temperature changes. These findings suggest that nitrate depletion is a key limiting factor for the sustainability of Rishiri Kombu, highlighting the importance of monitoring climate-driven changes in nitrate availability in coastal ecosystems.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze garbage waste data by day in a week at the Cituis Fish Landing Base (PPI Cituis), identify the causes of waste issues, and provide recommendations for waste management and handling. The research was conducted over two weeks of observation. Data were collected through waste characterization, total and average garbage waste volume measurements, the number of waste containers, and waste type composition from several source points. The results show that waste volume tends to increase at the end of the month, on weekends, and during holidays, following higher visitor numbers and fishing activities. Inorganic waste, especially plastic was the most dominant type across all port zones. The 3 kg container representing the harbor area had the highest percentage of waste bins compared with the 4 kg and 10 kg containers. Proper waste management is necessary to minimize pollution impacts at PPI Cituis and the surrounding environment. Recommended actions include improving waste facilities, strengthening governance and regulations, and enhancing community awareness and participation.
