Abstract

Creativity is vital in the world of painting. It can be created in relation to forms and techniques. In terms of form, this study adapted traditional Indonesian ornaments to a contemporary taste. The use of antique ornaments in the present context illustrates the postmodern art principle, specifically “shock of the old,” not “shock of the new”. At the technical level, this study integrates collage with splattering. The novelty of collage techniques lies in the independent creation of traditional Nusantara ornament forms through digital printing on canvas rather than with current print media. The application of the splattering technique responds to the collage, thereby blending artistically. The resulting artwork illustrates that the interplay between traditional visual elements and expressive splattering techniques can yield a harmonious aesthetic. This research produces novel aesthetic opportunities in contemporary painting.

Abstract

This study examines the extra-musical elements of the music film Kawyagita Mandala, which highlights gong luang as a sacred and increasingly rare Balinese gamelan. The novelty of this research lies in conceptualizing extra-musical elements not merely as cultural background, but as structuring principles that shape cinematic form. Data were collected using a qualitative descriptive method through interviews with karawitan experts and the production team, supported by a literature review and observation. The findings identify four interrelated dimensions: tattwa (philosophy), susila (ethics), lango (aesthetics), and gegebug (technique), which guide the film’s mise-en-scène, cinematography, montage, and sound. Tattwa dictates ritual-based visual construction; susila regulates ethical production practices; lango shapes visual and sonic harmony; and gegebug reflects reconstructed performance techniques at Apuan Singapadu Studio. By framing these elements as cinematic structures, the study offers a novel perspective on translating sacred musical ontology into contemporary audiovisual practice while supporting cultural preservation.

Abstract

Frequent warp yarn breakages continue to reduce the efficiency of handloom weaving, especially when using traditional spun yarns like cotton and polyester. This study explores the possibility of using nylon threads as unconventional yarns for hand weaving to overcome this issue. A studio-based, practice-led experimental design was employed, using nylon threads, commonly found in non-textile applications, as both warp and weft materials to evaluate their performance under real weaving conditions. The results show that nylon’s high tensile strength and abrasion resistance allowed it to function effectively as warp yarns, preventing breakages during weaving and creating tight, durable fabrics suitable for non-clothing uses such as upholstery and interior textiles. However, its slippery texture affected weft performance, necessitating modifications such as the use of open reeds and adjusted dent densities. The study demonstrates that nylon threads can be successfully adapted for handloom production as tough warp materials, providing an innovative alternative that reduces production inefficiencies. By reinterpreting a non-traditional material through studio-based experimentation, the research contributes to sustainable textile design and underlines the importance of material innovation in advancing modern handloom practices.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between rehearsal duration and performance quality across different music genres in the Kisii University Music Festival 2025. Guided by Deliberate Practice Theory (Ericsson, 1993), the study explores how structured and purposeful use of rehearsal time contributes to musical excellence. Specifically, it seeks to determine how much rehearsal time is sufficient to produce quality performances, whether some genres require more rehearsal time than others, and how performers and directors perceive the adequacy of rehearsal time. A qualitative research approach will be employed, using purposive sampling to select directors and performers actively involved in festival preparations and snowball sampling to identify additional key informants with relevant experience. Data will be collected through interviews, questionnaires, and performance assessments, and analyzed thematically and statistically to establish patterns linking rehearsal duration to performance outcomes. The findings are expected to provide insights into effective rehearsal time management across diverse musical genres, thereby enhancing performance planning and quality in university music festivals.

Abstract

The three-act structure is dominant in film screenwriting, including the satirical comedy genre, as seen in Jam Kosong (Empty Hours). However, these studies tend to focus on drama, with little attention paid to satirical comedy. The choice of satirical comedy as a creative form is based on both aesthetic and conceptual considerations. Satire has a distinctive character as a medium for social criticism that operates through irony, hyperbole, and paradox. The combination of satirical comedy with a three-act structure provides significant dramatic advantages. Therefore, this article seeks to enrich academic discourse on film screenwriting and the application of narrative structure in the satirical comedy genre. This study adopts an artistic research design, which positions artistic practice as a form of creative and critical inquiry integrated with educational objectives. This study reveals the most important finding: the three-act structure in the Jam Kosong screenplay is effective in constructing a satirical comedy narrative that critiques social issues such as educational inefficiency and bureaucratization, while still entertaining audiences through ironic humor.

Abstract

The effectiveness of visual meaning in a film depends on the support of sound; hence, the interplay between visual and auditory elements forms the foundation for narrative development, emotional resonance, and audience interpretation. Accordingly, this study seeks to analyze the interplay between visual and auditory components, including ambiance, dialogue, sound effects, and background music, in enhancing the narrative in the film Two Distant Strangers. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing Roland Barthes' semiotics to analyze the meanings generated by the integration of visual and auditory design. The results demonstrate that atmosphere intensifies emotions of confusion, fear, frustration, and tension; dialogue, particularly when paired with music, enhances the audience's comprehension of the scene; sound effects accompanying character actions clarify the message of injustice; and background music aligns with the emotional tone of the scene, reinforcing the visual atmosphere. Well-designed music profoundly deepens emotional resonance, elucidates the narrative, and enhances the coherence of the film's overall cinematic experience.
