Abstract

The kidneys are crucial organs with a bean-like form that can be found on either side of the spine and filter toxins and excess water from the blood. Similar to other organs in the body, the kidneys are susceptible to injury due to a variety of conditions. The current study included a hundred individuals on dialysis who were suffering from renal failure. Their ages ranged from 16 to 70 years old. These patients were enrolled in Al-Sadder Medical City in the governorate of Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf. The same precautions were also taken on the healthy group, which consisted of fifty samples whose ages were roughly equal to those of the dialysis patients. These healthy samples were kept in test tubes designated for this purpose and were kept at the proper temperature until the required number of samples was completed. According to the current study's outcomes, dialysis patients had significantly higher levels of oxidative factors, urea, creatinine, and glucose than did the control group. Creatinine, Urea, Uric Acid, Fe, and Ferritin levels were higher in patients than in the control group, but D3 and HGB levels were significantly lower. Due to patients' impaired kidney function, the immune response is to blame for this. Regarding GSH, there is no appreciable distinction between the sick group and the healthy group. The patients' participation in some treatments is said to be the cause.

Abstract

Bacterial infections are a common cause of urogenital symptoms in women of reproductive age, which occurs usually as a result of imbalance in the normal vaginal flora and increase in anaerobic bacteria. Molecular investigation an involvement of M. hominis in urogenital infections of women, sequencing and submission of some positive study M. hominis isolates in the NCBI-GenBank database, and indicating the relationship between infection and some risk factors (age, previous medication, frequent compliance, and marital status). Totally, 191 diseased women with urogenital infections were attended to some private gynecology clinics and subjected to collection of vaginal swabs to be served for DNAs extraction. Targeting 16S rRNA gene, molecular examination was conducted using conventional PCR assay, and the, some positive samples were sequenced, submitted the NCBI-GenBank database, and analysed phylogenetically by the MEGA-11 software to indicate identity between the study and NCB-BLAST M. hominis isolates / strains. Molecular findings of PCR assay showed that 20.42% of study samples were positive to M. hominis. Sequencing data of 10 isolates revealed its identity to the global NCBI-BLAST Indian M. hominis isolate (ID: PP380133.1) at 99.06-99.77% and mutation / changes at 0.0001-0.00025%. Concerning the groups of risk factors, incidence of M. hominis infection was increased significantly in individuals aged 20-40 years than those aged <20 and >40 years, and non-medicated than frequent medication; however, insignificant variations were seen between the groups of frequent compliance and marital status.

Abstract

The Sebuku River has an important role for the life of flora, fauna, and local communities in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan Province. Mining activities in this area raise concerns about potential water pollution. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of mining activities on the water quality of the Sebuku River. Sampling was carried out by purposive sampling at five observation stations between ST-1 and ST-5 based on predetermined coordinate points. The parameters tested included temperature, TSS, pH, DO, BOD, COD, NO₃, PO₄, CN⁻, and fecal coliform. The analysis method referred to SNI and the results are compared with class II river water quality standards in Appendix VI of Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 22 of 2021. The results of the analysis showed that the TSS level of all stations exceeded the quality standard as the majority of respondents who stated that it was cloudy, but the level tended to decrease downstream. The highest COD parameters were detected in ST-2. This is supported by the value of the Pollution Index (PI) that indicated it as the primary pollution source from mining activities. The rest of the parameters are still within the permissible limits. Overall, the water quality of the Sebuku River is still classified as moderate based on the value of the Water Quality Index (WQI).

Abstract

Coastal abrasion poses a significant threat to Indonesia, an archipelagic nation with one of the world’s longest coastlines. The phenomenon is particularly severe in Napabalano District, Muna Regency, where dense settlements, economic activities, and declining mangrove ecosystems increase exposure to erosion hazards. This study aims to assess the risk of coastal abrasion in Napabalano District using a GIS-based approach aligned with the Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) framework. Primary data, including GPS coordinates, satellite imagery, and field surveys, were integrated with secondary data such as demographic statistics, oceanographic parameters, and historical records of abrasion events. Spatial analysis in ArcGIS was employed to evaluate vulnerability, capacity, hazard, and disaster risk indices. Results show that all villages in Napabalano District fall into the high-risk category, with Napabalano and Napalakura recording the highest risk values due to concentrated populations, limited mangrove protection, and inadequate disaster management capacity. Social and economic vulnerabilities, including high poverty ratios and dependence on coastal livelihoods, exacerbate exposure, while institutional capacity remains critically low, marked by weak early warning systems and limited community preparedness. Mitigation strategies proposed include mangrove rehabilitation, strict coastal zoning enforcement, community-based disaster preparedness programs, and the establishment of effective early warning systems. These findings highlight the urgent need for integrated, multi-stakeholder approaches to strengthen resilience against coastal abrasion. The study provides a strategic basis for local government and community planning in managing and reducing the impacts of coastal hazards in Napabalano District.

Abstract

Electricity demand in Indonesia is increasing along with economic and population growth. The plan to build a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kalimantan needs to be accompanied by support facilities such as disposal. Research on disposal facilities in West Kalimantan is crucial because of its proximity to the planned NPP, and using local materials like kaolin and clay will be more economical. In this study, compacted clay and kaolin layers were used as part of the engineered barrier at the disposal site. The goal is to prevent the release of Cs-137 from the facility into the unsaturated zone. XRD, XRF, and ICP-OES were used to characterize the clay and kaolin studied. Analysis revealed many absorbent minerals suitable for the engineered barrier at the disposal site.To evaluate the diffusion coefficient (Da) of Cs-137 in compacted clay and kaolin samples, a vertical diffusion model was employed. The diffusion coefficient was measured in a diffusion column unit with varying times and densities. Fick's law equation was used to calculate the Da value for the samples. The results showed that the diffusion coefficient for kaolin ranged from 2.75 x 10-12 to 3.96 x 10-12 m²/s, and for clay from 1.62 x 10-12 to 2.92 x 10-12 m²/s. In clay and kaolin samples, density affected the diffusion rate; higher density resulted in a lower Da value. However, time did not impact the Da value. The diffusion coefficient in kaolin was twice as fast as in clay samples. In the safety assessment experiment with RESRAD Offsite, a 0.2 m kaolin layer was sufficient.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of ecological management in supporting reclamation of tailings land at the Mile Post 21 Reclamation and Biodiversity Research Center, PT Freeport Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research employs primary data obtained through interviews, documentation, and direct observation, complemented by secondary data from archives, reports, and company records. The analysis is guided by ISO 14001 environmental management principles, using a checklist method adapted from the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI) to evaluate ecological, technical, socio-economic, and regulatory aspects of reclamation practices. Findings reveal that ecological management at Mile Post 21 has been highly effective, achieving more than 80% compliance with ISO 14001 indicators. Vegetation cover increased from less than 10% to over 75%, with more than 160 planted species complemented by natural succession involving over 500 species. Soil quality improved significantly, with organic carbon rising from <0.5% to 2.5%, pH levels increasing toward neutrality, and cation exchange capacity reaching medium–high levels. These changes facilitated the restoration of ecological functions and supported biodiversity recovery. Moreover, reclaimed land has been transformed into productive agricultural areas integrating crops, livestock, and aquaculture, providing socio-economic benefits for local communities and involving indigenous landowners in sustainable management. Despite technical challenges related to poor soil properties and managerial constraints such as long-term funding, the program demonstrates that ecological management, when implemented systematically under ISO 14001, can effectively restore degraded post-mining land into ecologically resilient and socially beneficial systems.

Abstract

This study examines the food safety risk of tetrodotoxin poisoning associated with pufferfish consumption at Kwandang Fishing Port, North Gorontalo. A mixed-method approach was applied, combining field observations, interviews with fishermen, and literature-based toxicity analysis. Risk assessment was conducted using a semi-quantitative matrix integrating hazard level, exposure frequency, and community awareness. The results showed that only one species, Diodon hystrix, was identified in the landings. Although this species has lower toxicity compared to Tetraodontidae, it still contains tetrodotoxin in specific organs and poses a poisoning risk. The overall risk level was classified as moderate (score = 8), influenced by high toxicity but limited exposure. The findings indicate that local ecological knowledge contributes to risk reduction, yet inconsistencies in consumption behavior still create potential hazards. This study highlights the importance of integrating biological toxicity and socio-behavioral factors in food safety risk assessment. Strengthening public awareness and implementing risk-based monitoring strategies are essential to minimize poisoning incidents in coastal communities.

Abstract

Air pollution generated from fuel combustion in palm oil mill boilers poses potential risks to both environmental quality and public health. One of the main factors influencing pollutant dispersion is the stack height and flue gas exit velocity. This study was conducted at PT X, Indragiri Hilir, to analyze the effect of stack height variations (45–70 m) and exit gas velocities (15–25 m/s) on the maximum concentrations of SO₂, NO₂, and particulate matter (PM). Meteorological data were obtained from ECMWF and NASA for a ten-year period (2015–2024), while topographical data were processed using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Meteorological inputs were prepared with AERMET, and topography was processed using AERMAP as inputs for AERMOD dispersion modeling. The results indicated that increasing stack height significantly reduced maximum pollutant concentrations in ambient air. Similarly, higher exit gas velocity (25 m/s) enhanced plume rise and mixing, producing lower pollutant concentrations compared to lower velocities (15 m/s). Under the actual operating condition of six active boiler stacks, the maximum hourly and daily concentrations of SO₂, NO₂, and PM were found to be well below the Indonesian ambient air quality standards set by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). In conclusion, technical variations in stack design play an essential role in reducing pollutant concentrations, and AERMOD modeling can serve as a reference for formulating emission control strategies in palm oil mill industries.
