Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder characterized by persistent synovial inflammation and progressive joint damage. The identification of reliable circulating markers could potentially improve early detection of the disease. To evaluate the diagnostic potential of circulating levels of Semaphorin-3A (SEMA3A) and Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein (COMP) and their combined diagnostic potential in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Comparative case-control study design was conducted in Division of Rheumatology, in Al-Najaf Teaching Hospital in Al-Najaf city of Iraq, for the period between July 2025 and January 2026, included 90 participants 45 of them patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis according to ACR/EULAR criteria and 45 apparently healthy controls. Blood samples were collected from all participants, and levels of circulating SEMA3A and COMP were estimated by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The serum concentration of both COMP and SEMA3A was significantly reduced (P < 0.001) in RA patients compared with controls (7.82 ± 2.31 pg/mL and 5.41 ± 1.62 ng/mL) vs. (11.96 ± 3.04 pg/mL and 8.73 ± 2.07 ng/mL). ROC analysis showed a good degree of discrimination for SEMA3A (84%, 80%, AUC = 0.88) and COMP (80%, 76%, AUC = 0.85) in RA patients. Combination of both biomarkers resulted in a better discrimination power (88.9%, 84.4%, AUC = 0.92). Serum SEMA3A and COMP show a good degree of discrimination for RA, and the combination of both biomarkers shows a better discrimination power for the diagnosis of RA.

Abstract

Mining activities, which play a vital role in fulfilling Indonesia's mineral resource needs, are expected to contribute to the improvement of community welfare. According to Law No. 3 of 2020, the management of mineral and coal resources is aimed, among other objectives, at increasing the income of local communities, regional governments, and the state, as well as creating job opportunities through the implementation of Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) programs. However, in practice, the involvement of mining companies in Semarang Regency remains limited and tends to focus on short-term economic interests that lack sustainability. This study employs a descriptive quantitative method to evaluate the impact of andesite mining activities on the environmental, social, and economic conditions of communities in the ring I area, specifically in Karangjati Subdistrict, Bergas District, Semarang Regency. Data were collected through the distribution of questionnaires to 44 respondents and analyzed using the Likert scale. The research findings indicated that the average scores for the environmental, economic, and social aspects were 3.29, 3.21, and 3.14, respectively. These results suggest that community perceptions of the impacts of mining activities fall within a moderate category. It can be concluded that the community does not perceive significant negative environmental impacts from mining activities, reflecting that the company has carried out environmental management and monitoring (UKL-UPL) optimally, in accordance with environmental quality standards and applicable regulations. In terms of the social aspect, the community tends not to experience noticeable changes as a result of mining operations.

Abstract

South Sumatra Province has abundant natural resources that support the economy, but uncontrolled development triggers environmental degradation and disaster risks. Sustainable management is needed in accordance with Law No. 32/2009 and PP No. 22/2021. Water regulation environmental services play an important role in maintaining hydrological and ecosystem balance. GIS-based spatial mapping of landscapes, natural vegetation, and land cover is important as a basis for sustainable environmental policies. The research was conducted in South Sumatra Province using secondary data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and related agencies. Spatial analysis was carried out based on GIS with an overlay approach to three parameters: land cover (weight 60%), landscape (28%), and natural vegetation (12%). The assessment used the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method and produced the Environmental Services Performance Index (IKJLH), which was classified into five categories: very low to very high. The results are visualized in a colored thematic map to show the differences in water regulation performance in each region. The results of the 2023 spatial analysis show that most areas in South Sumatra Province have good water regulation environmental services performance, with a dominance of medium (55%) and high (33%) categories. Ogan Komering Ilir (60.93%), Banyuasin (53.24%), and North Musi Rawas (26.19% very high) are among the best performing areas. In contrast, Palembang City (52.05% low), Empat Lawang, Lahat, and Lubuk Linggau show ecological pressure due to urbanization and land use changes. This condition emphasizes the importance of sustainable environmental management to maintain water regulatory functions in the future.

Abstract

Krendet, gill nets, and traps are fishing gear commonly used to catch lobsters (Panulirus spp) by Indonesian fishermen, but there are many issues related to the use of non-selective and environmentally unfriendly fishing gear. This laboratory research aims to develop selective and effective lobster capture technology, in line with the implementation of PERMEN KP No. 27 of 2024 regarding lobster management. The data obtained were analyzed using the Independent Sample t-Test to evaluate the differences in selectivity and effectiveness between the HDPE multilevel wall traps and the standard foldable traps in capturing legal-sized lobsters. The analysis results showed that the multilevel wall traps performed better, with a total of 56 lobsters captured, all of which were legal-sized (≥ 200 grams), while the foldable traps only captured 26 legal lobsters and 20 illegal ones, accounting for approximately 43.48% of illegal catches. This shows that the tiered wall trap is more selective and environmentally friendly. In terms of the proportion of legal catches, the use of multilevel wall traps increased the number of legal catches by 77.8% compared to foldable traps, which is highly significant for the sustainability of lobster resources. Statistical tests also show that the average weight of lobsters caught by tiered wall traps is significantly higher, with a mean difference of 173.02 grams (p 0.000) and a 95% confidence interval between 126.99 and 219.04 grams

Abstract

Shallots (Allium ascalonicum L.) are one of the horticultural commodities with high economic value and are needed by the community as food. Shallots also contribute to national inflation. Shallots become potential commodity to be developed in the region of North Sumatra, especially in the Toba region. One of the efforts to increase the growth and production of shallot plants can be done by applying SP-36 Fertilizer and Red Devil Fish Liquid Organic Fertilizer. This research aims to determine the best SP-36 and Red Devil Fish Liquid Organic Fertilizer, growth and production of shallots. The research was conducted from September to December 2023 in Lumban Silintong Village, Balige District, Toba Regency, North Sumatra with an altitude of ± 945 m above sea level. The design used was a factorial Randomized Group Design with three replications. The treatments studied were the first factor of SP-36 dose with four levels of treatment (0 (control), 112.5 Kg/Ha, 225 Kg/Ha, 337.5 Kg/Ha and the second factor was the dose of liquid organic fertilizer of red devil fish (0 (control), 3 g/plot, 5 g/plot). The results showed that the provision of SP-36 had a significant effect on the observed variable, namely the fresh weight of plants per plot. Giving Red Devil Fish Liquid Organic Fertilizer can significantly increase plant height, plant fresh weight per plot, plant fresh weight per sample, number of tubers per plot and tuber diameter.

Abstract

The ever-increasing demand for electrical energy demands alternative, environmentally friendly, and sustainable energy sources. Conventional batteries generally rely on synthetic chemicals that have the potential to pollute the environment. One solution that is beginning to be developed is the use of organic waste as an electrolyte source in bio-batteries. This review article discusses the potential of orange peel, fruit, and vegetable waste as a natural electrolyte containing organic acid compounds, particularly citric acid (C₆H₈O₇), as well as mineral acids that can decompose into ions in solution, thus conducting electricity. Various research results show that the acid and water content of organic waste can produce a potential difference when paired with dissimilar metal electrodes, thus generating an electric current. In addition, the pH characteristics and natural electrolyte content of the waste indicate its suitability as a substitute for hazardous chemicals in batteries. Thus, the use of orange peel, fruit, and vegetable waste has the potential to become an environmentally friendly bio-battery innovation that can support efforts to reduce dependence on conventional batteries while contributing to sustainable organic waste management.

Abstract

The rapid development of road infrastructure in Indonesia has increased the demand for construction materials while intensifying environmental challenges. This study examines the potential of nickel waste a byproduct of nickel smelting widely available in Indonesia as a partial replacement for coarse aggregate in porous asphalt mixtures. The research evaluates both the technical performance and environmental implications of this substitution, contributing to sustainable construction and circular economy discussions. Laboratory tests assessed parameters such as stability, flow, void content, and the Marshall Quotient, following Bina Marga and SNI standards. Results indicate that nickel waste can satisfy several technical requirements, achieving an optimal asphalt content of 5.5%, which also supports waste reduction and potential cost savings. However, because nickel slag contains heavy metals, effective environmental risk management such as leaching control and stabilization is essential. The findings suggest that incorporating nickel waste is not merely a technical adjustment but a strategic move toward resource efficiency, industrial symbiosis, and sustainable infrastructure governance. By reclassifying industrial waste as a productive input, this research highlights opportunities for policy reform, procurement innovation, and collaborative efforts among government, industry, and academia. Ultimately, the study concludes that adding nickel waste to porous asphalt mixtures can enhance road performance, minimize ecological impacts, and advance Indonesia’s green infrastructure agenda, provided that appropriate regulatory and environmental safeguards are implemented.
