Abstract

The purpose this study was to determine whether undergraduate students’ testwiseness and access to digital devices are key factors critical to enhancing their attitude towards Computer-Assisted Testing (CAT) in some selected Universities in the North-west geo-political zone of Nigeria. It also examined if a significant difference existed in undergraduate students’ attitude to CAT in Universities in the North-west Nigeria. These were with a view to improving the CAT outcome directed towards certifying the quality in education by the Nigerian universities. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The sample consisted of an intact class of 5,880 Part I undergraduate students selected from federal and state-owned Universities in the North-west. A self-developed instrument tagged: “Undergraduate’s Testwiseness Digital Accessibility and Attitude Inventory (UTDAAI)”, was used to collect data. Data were analysed using Stepwise Multiple Regression and independent t-test statistics. The results revealed that testwiseness and digital accessibility are not significantly combined to influence undergraduate students’ attitude to CAT in Universities in the North-west Nigeria. However, there existed a positive significant relationship between testwiseness and digital accessibility. Further, there was no significant sex difference in undergraduate students’ attitudinal disposion to CAT in Universities in the North-west Nigeria. The study concluded that testwiseness was not a most potent predictor of students’ attitude to CAT irrespective of their access to digital devices in the University. It was recommended that Universities’ Management should invest considerable resources in developing rapid response digital intervention initiatives to support the learning, teaching and assessment transition for undergraduate students in the country.

Abstract

The use of innovative and advance resources like those of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to for Social Studies can aid the actualization of the aims and objectives of Social Studies education in Nigeria. This theoretical paper pointed out the fact that Geographical Information Systems can be used to achieve quality Social Studies education in Nigeria through exploring available literature to provide a good understanding of the topic under review. The paper adopted an analytical approach through extensive review of literature around the major variables which are Geographical Information Systems and Social Studies. It further discussed the relationship between Social Studies and Geographical Information Systems as well as the benefits which will be accrued to both learners and educators of Social Studies by using them as instructional references for Social Studies lessons. The paper concluded by explaining the benefits of applying Geographical Information Systems resources to Social Studies. These benefits include providing students with visual learning of Social Studies; studying the major themes of Social Studies through a spatial perspective; using stored information for education and applying technology to educational processes as it concerns learning in Social Studies.

Abstract

The study investigated locus of control and self-concept as determinants of internet addiction among public university undergraduates in Oyo State. Four hundred University Undergraduates were selected through stratified random sampling techniques which were used in sampling participants from two selected public universities in Oyo state. To achieve the objectives, the respondents were measured with relevant adopted standardized scales such as the Self-Concept Scale, Locus of Control Scale, and Internet Addiction Scale. Four research hypotheses were tested in the study through Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression analysis. Results showed that there was a significant relationship between locus of control and internet addiction (r=0.12; p<0.05), there was a significant relationship between self-concept and internet addiction (r=0.66; p<0.05), there is a joint effect between locus of control, self-concept and internet addiction (F 2,397 =148.020; p<0.05) while locus of control do not statistically predict internet addiction (t=0.618, p>0.05) and self-concept statistically predict internet addiction (t=16.942; p<0.05). The study recommends among others that school counselors and policymakers should organize seminars, workshops, and conferences to sensitize the students about the need to have realistic and objective self-assessment and self-concept.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of Low-cost Technology on Secondary School students’ academic performance in Biology. Quasi-experimental research of post-test non-randomized control group design was adopted for this study. This design was adopted to compare the performance of students who were taught the concept of biology with low-cost technology and those taught without the low-cost technology. Two intact classes from two secondary schools were randomly sampled.  The instruments used were Lesson Note (LN), Biology Performance Test (BPT) for data gathering, and Low-Cost Technology (3D Model of Plant and Animal Cells). BPT was subjected to pilot testing and a reliability coefficient of 0.87 was obtained using the Kuder Richardson KR-20. Two research questions and two research hypotheses were formulated for the study. Findings show that the 3D Model of Plant and Animal Cell significantly influences the understanding of the topic “Plant and Animal Cells” among students irrespective of their gender and institutional ownership. Secondary school teachers should make use of those low-cost technological resources available in their environment for the production of instructional materials.

Abstract

The study determines the Pedagogical challenges facing the teaching of business studies in Bauchi State, Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised 248 business studies teachers from secondary schools in Bauchi State. Since the population size is manageable, the researchers used all populations. The researchers developed a structured questionnaire for data collection. The instrument was validated by two experts from the rank of senior lecturer and above in the department of Test and Measurement of Nasarawa State University, Keffi. Cronbach Alpha method was used to test the reliability of the instrument which yielded a coefficient value of 0.77. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while a t-test was used to test the two null hypotheses formulated for the study at 0.05 level of significance. The finding indicated among others, that some Business studies courses are taught mostly by unqualified teachers. Data analysis revealed that some of the teachers were not familiar with the curriculum and since some of the teachers were not trained, they set internal examinations that only tested the low levels of the cognitive domain that is knowledge and comprehension while the national examinations tested all the levels of the cognitive domain. The study concludes that the Government should employ qualified lecturers in the area of Business Studies in the state, providing appropriate resources, retraining teachers in pedagogical competency needs. Appropriate recommendations were made including retraining of the teachers.

Abstract

Online learning frequently employs tedious media, including news text learning. This study aims to describe the innovative use of learning media in class VIII B learning of news texts using the Tribunnews Instagram account at SMP 17 Agustus – 1 Muncar. This research is qualitative because the data are presented in the form of words. The method of research employed is descriptive research. The subjects of this study were eighth-grade B SMP 17 Agustus-1 Muncar students. With Instagram Tribunnews, the objective is to learn news text. Documentation is the technique used for data collection. The data processing technique used is a qualitative descriptive technique. The findings of this study indicate that learning with Instagram Tribunnews video media is superior and more engaging for students than learning with news sample text media alone. This can be seen in the improvement of student interactions over time. There were only students who did not have access to a reliable network, and there were students who were late for Zoom. However, the teacher has provided a solution for this.
