Abstract

In this modern era, social media, especially Instagram, has formed a new celebrity population called "Selebgram," where the audience recognizes, admires, and follows their identities and lives. In Instagram, the communication between "Selebgram" and followers is through likes and comments. Several studies have been conducted on this communication system, and it has been found that likes and comments give rise to excessive social comparison and self-objectification, which can lead to an unrealistic idealization of body image and body image dissatisfaction. Such dissatisfaction then results in psychological disorders such as poor self- and body-esteem, unstable mood, stress, anxiety, and eating disorders, especially among teenage girls. Teen girl "selebgrammers" with high engagement on social media are thought to show a more complex body image idealization dynamic that will be examined in this qualitative study. Through interviews or online questionnaires, this study was conducted on six girl micro-celebrities in their teens in Indonesia. The results showed that the dynamics of body image idealization among girls on "Selebgram" consist of four steps: (1) internalization of the ideal media; (2) self-objectification and social comparison; (3) body image dissatisfaction, moderated by significant others, the purpose of using Instagram, and religion; and (4) self-branding containing self-presentation.

Abstract

Mambwe language is spoken in Mbala and Senga districts in Northern Province along the corridors of Zambia and Tanzania. Guthrie (1948) classifies Mambwe as M15. Nurse and Phillipson (1999) have characterized Mambwe as emanating from a language called Fipa in Southern Tanzania. Nurse and Phillipson (1999) add that most speakers of Mambwe language are found on the Zambian side. This article presents an analysis of the syntactic structure of the word of the noun phrase (NP) by modification in Mambwe language. The paper is underpinned by Lexical Morphology (LM) and Bantu Morpho-syntax theoretical frameworks. The study used qualitative approach, elicitation and document analysis methods for data collection and analysis. The paper identifies the modifiers which are prevalent in Mambwe and analyses how they combine with nouns to form the NP. It also outlines the prevailing word orders in the NP by modification in Mambwe language. The study shows that there are three common word orders in the NP by modification in Mambwe language, namely; Noun + Demonstrative (N+Dem), Noun + Adjective (N+Adj) and Possessive Pre-prefix + Adjective (Poss. Pre-prefix +Adj).

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Village Court (VC) system in promoting access to justice in rural Bangladesh. The formal legal system in Bangladesh is expensive and time-consuming, making it difficult for underprivileged rural people to access justice. The VC system is a combination of formal and informal dispute resolution processes and has been initiated by the government to address the demand for access to justice for rural people. However, several obstacles have hampered the efficacy of the VC system, making it impossible to acquire public satisfaction in the justice process. This case study examines the effectiveness of the village court system in promoting access to justice in two selected villages in Noakhali district, Bangladesh. The study evaluates various factors that impact the success of the village court system, such as policies, procedures, acts, rules, oversight mechanisms, legal awareness, and resources available to Union Parishad officials and community members. The findings suggest that while the village court system is functional in some areas, it heavily relies on government-supported projects and is largely ineffective outside of these areas. The study provides recommendations for improving the effectiveness of the village court system, including necessary amendments to the village court act/rules, proper government monitoring and supervision, improved financial and human resources for the Union Parishad, and greater accountability and competency of all stakeholders. By addressing these issues, the village court system could become a vital tool for promoting access to justice in rural Bangladesh.
