Abstract

This research gives an account of how to enhance the students' phonetic transcription and word stress mastery of pronunciation through drilling method. That was obviously proved that the fourth-semester students' mastery of pronunciation was unsatisfactory. They were often found mispronounce English words. Meanwhile, phonetic transcription and word stress are considered as the main pronunciation features as a basis for having a good pronunciation. Then, drilling method was used in this research since it is an essential part of classroom pronunciation work and is also possibly the time in the lesson when the students are more reliant on the teacher. Besides, drilling is also fundamental to help students remember new items. However, this study was a classroom action research, which consisted of two cycles and each of cycles consisted of four phases. The second cycle was done based on the reflection in the first cycle by revising some drawbacks. The participants of the research were the fourth-semester students of English language education study program of STKIP PGRI Trenggalek. The data collection methods of this research had been obtained from pronunciation test and observation. Then, the data of this research were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The research findings proved that the implementation of drilling method effectively enhanced the students‘ progressive achievement from the preliminary study to the first and the second cycle and to finally meet the success criteria toward learning outcome stated in the syllabus.

Abstract

Speaking is the most difficult skill for most learners who learn it as a second or foreign language due to their low proficiency. The application of blended learning model is expected can be a solution for the learners who has problem with speaking skills. Meanwhile, learners’ motivation to study and get involved in learning is also become crucial aspects to achieve the learning objectives since the teacher’s role is only as a facilitator. Teaching speaking using blended learning model is divided into three major activities; these are warming up, main activities and closing. Some applications and internet connection are also needed to support the learning process. This learning model will give benefit both for the learners and also the teacher

Abstract

The research was aimed to enhance the students’ reading comprehension skill by using authentic materials. Action research was conducted with two cycles. The research subjects were the fourth semester students of English Language Education Department of STKIP PGRI Trenggalek who took Extensive Reading. The research was done in two cycles with some changes of activity. The result of the research showed there was improvement of the students’ mean score. From making paraphrasing, the students’ mean score of the first cycle was 65.05 and the second cycle was 75.87. The students’ skill of reading comprehension increased by: (1) enhancing the students’ interest to read by using authentic materials, (2) improving the students’ motivation in reading activity, (3) helping the students paraphrase as one of reading evaluation. It shows that authentic materials can be used to help students improve their reading skill

Abstract

The objective of the research is to improve students’ listening skill through Discovery Listening Technique. The research design was action research. This method was for improving and modifying the quality of teaching and learning listening comprehension. The subjects of this research were the students of the second semester of English Education Department in the academic year 2015/2016 STKIP PGRI Trenggalek. The procedures of research were planning, implementing, analyzing, and reflecting. By implementing three phases of discovery listening technique, the students could improve their listening skill. It can be known by the improvement of the score from diagnostic test, cycle1 and cycle 2. The mean score of Diagnostic test was 65.7, then 68 in Cycle 1, and 75.33 in cycle 2. Further, the result of questionnaire showed that the students never applied this technique before, discovery listening technique is very helpful for improving listening skill, it is also good for increasing their critical thinking, they have higher motivation for learning listening and it is challenging, and they want to apply this technique continuously

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe precisely how an online learning using blog which is designed through discovery learning model approach be used in teaching reading at STKIP PGRI Trenggalek. This research is conducted to know how technology affects the learning process which is designed to appeal students’ curiosity and willingness in learning. Through this descriptive qualitative research, researcher gathers the data from the third semester students of English department who take reading lecture and be taught by using English discovery blog. In this research, the researcher becomes the human instrument, the main instrument of the research. The data are gotten through observation, interview and questionnaire which are given to the lecturers and the students of reading class. The data analysis includes the calculation of the students’ interaction with other participants and the lecturer, the percentage of the questionnaires’ result, and the qualitative analysis on the result of observation and interview. The result of this research shows that students are attracted in learning by using online media. Students feel that the blog used is quite easy to follow and the lay out can appeal their curiosity. The direct interaction with the lecturer and learning through this technology gives larger chance for students in learning reading. However, there are some problems occur during the use of the media such as the poor internet connection and the lack of equipment needed to access the blog

Abstract

The aims of this research are to know the types and the dominant form of command speech acts in Surah An-Nisa by Saheeh International. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative study exactly document analysis as a research design. The subject of this research is the script of Surah An-Nisa. It is used documentation in collecting the data and to make easier in gaining the data the researcher also use table analysis and formula. The result of this research showed there are one types of command speech acts in Surah An-Nisa, named direct speech acts. Meanwhile, the dominant form of command speech acts in Surah An-Nisa is imperative which gain high frequency of occurrence
