Abstract

Abstract This qualitative case study investigates the transformative impact of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) principles on the mindsets of the Nkayi community in Zimbabwe. The primary objective is to explore how these principles can shift perceptions, attitudes, and experiences among community members engaged in development projects. Employing an interpretivist qualitative approach, the study involved focus group discussions with 25 community members and semi-structured interviews with 5 social service officers. Questionnaires were responded to by the 25 community members. Thematic analysis was utilized to interpret the data, revealing significant positive shifts in community members' perceptions and attitudes as they engaged in ABCD-inspired initiatives. Participants developed a renewed sense of ownership, agency and responsibility, transitioning from a state of disempowerment to proactive self-reliance. Key factors facilitating this transformation included building trust through small successes, empowering community leadership and fostering genuine partnerships with government entities. The study concludes that the ABCD approach effectively catalyzes mindset transformation, enabling marginalized communities to leverage local assets for sustainable development. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners, emphasizing the need for broader implementation of the ABCD framework in Zimbabwe. The research highlights the importance of documenting strategies employed by the Nkayi community to overcome challenges in adopting ABCD principles, ultimately contributing to the empowerment of marginalized communities and promoting sustainable development initiatives.

Abstract

AbstractIn today’s world, waste is perhaps the most significant yet complicated category deprived of a proper definition. For environmentalists, waste as a practice of excess stands for death, whereas for commodity cultures, it represents economic freedom and personal choice. Amid the appeals to save the planet and the tendency to possess and accumulate, the solid interconnections we once had with our waste, have been long forgotten. What we are left with, is a restricted source as the moral motivation for responsible abandonment, reflecting the core of actual crisis. This reality presents substantial obstacles in finding ways to coexist with the waste we’ve neglected every day. The article hence intends to collect nearly everything that modern society throws away and never really looks back. In taking up this as a challenge, I aim to explore how waste, often seen as worthless detritus, contributes to shaping the self and ethical sensibilities. When it comes to waste management, the intention is neither to imply the need for changes, based on fear or disgust nor to alter its apparent negative role into a positive one. Instead, what I do desire is to provide, waste material, the attention it deserves, by considering and re-considering various instances of their crucial generative role.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper examines the intricate relationship between traditional religious rituals and their influence on Christian worship and ethical frameworks. It examines how pre-Christian and indigenous religious practices have shaped, complemented, or transformed Christian liturgical traditions and moral codes. By analysing historical, theological, and anthropological perspectives, the study reveals how ritual elements such as rites of passage, sacrificial offerings, festivals, and communal ceremonies have been integrated or adapted into Christian worship. The research also highlights the ethical implications of these integrations, focusing on how they inform concepts of morality, community cohesion, and spiritual discipline within Christian contexts. Furthermore, the article investigates the tension and dialogue between preserving traditional customs and adhering to Christian doctrinal purity. The research method involves oral interviews with Christian pastors, and case studies from cultural backgrounds and online sources are presented to illustrate the dynamic interplay between tradition and faith, showcasing how rituals can serve as vehicles for ethical instruction and spiritual reflection. The conclusion emphasises the ongoing evolution of Christian worship and ethics in response to cultural influences, advocating for a nuanced understanding of how tradition shapes contemporary Christian identity and moral practice. Involving ourselves with our cultures makes others benefit from them and become one in unity, wisdom and love.

Abstract

This paper explores the phenomenon of AI-generated offensive language and investigates the absence of metaphor in offensive language produced by artificial intelligence, specifically focusing on the implications for Conceptual Metaphor Theory and AI ethics. Human language, particularly offensive terms such as “fuck” and “bitch”, is rich with metaphorical meaning rooted in embodied experiences and social contexts. These metaphors trigger deep emotional and social responses, connecting abstract concepts like violation, power, and subjugation to physical and cultural experiences. In contrast, AI models like ChatGPT generate offensive language based on statistical patterns and data correlations rather than embodying the social and cultural significance that humans associate with such language. Through detailed analysis, this study reveals that AI-generated offensive language lacks the embodied metaphor that defines human communication. As a result, AI’s offensive language appears emotionally flat and socially detached, leading to the concept of pseudo-offensive language—language that mimics human insults but lacks the metaphorical richness. The paper also discusses the implications of these findings for metaphor theory, showing how AI’s inability to process metaphor challenges Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, and highlights the ethical concerns regarding AI’s emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity. Lastly, the paper proposes directions for future research to improve AI’s understanding of metaphor, enhance contextual sensitivity in Natural Language Processing (NLP), and address ethical issues in AI development, particularly in sensitive and socially charged language contexts.

Abstract

The emergence of Islamist Terrorism had defined the current era when in the name of Islam, most horrifying terrorist incidences of all time occurred killing thousands of people in the previous two decades has caused this vast devastation. After the incidence of 9/11 attack in the US and Bangladesh has also witnessed the most gruesome terrorist attacks, targeted killings and several small-scale terrorist incidences by Islamist Jihadists. This study focuses on the actual reasons that caused the emergence of Islamist terrorism in Bangladesh post 9/11 and initiatives or the measurements taken by the LEAs of Bangladesh. The research includes semi-structured interviews of ten participants from a different professional background. The research generated several critical facts. Political Islam, Ideology of Islamism, deprivation in every aspect and misinterpretation of Islam are the vital factors for emerging Islamist terrorism in Bangladesh post 9/11. Steps taken by the government or LEAs in response to Islamist terrorism are successful in most of the cases. Enactment of a certain law, prevention of terrorist financing, establishment of different operational units of LEAs and the efficacy of intelligence units are crucial to success in fighting against terrorism. This research recommends that the actual essence of Islam needs to be taught to the general people. Besides, employment opportunity has to be created, and terrorist financing has to be stopped. The recommendations for the LEAs are that they should emphasize on cooperation with the intelligence units, providing counter-narratives to terrorists, friendly attitudes with terrorists, being IT expert and preventing terrorist financing.

Abstract

The tax system is the main pillar of state financing as well as an instrument for creating social justice and sustainable economic development. This study aims to examine in depth the concept of tax subjects and objects in Income Tax (PPh) and Value Added Tax (PPN), and to compare the fundamental differences between the two in terms of regulation, implementation, and contribution to state revenue. Using a descriptive qualitative approach through literature study and content analysis, this study synthesizes data from laws and regulations, scientific journals, and official institutional reports. The results of the study show that PPh focuses on income received by individuals or corporate entities, while VAT is imposed on the consumption of goods and services without distinguishing between consumers. The PPh collection system is direct, while VAT is indirect through business actors. Although it adheres to the principle of self-assessment, the implementation of the tax system still faces challenges in the form of low tax literacy and voluntary compliance. In addition, the development of the digital economy, cross-border transactions, and tax avoidance practices require regulatory adaptation and strengthening of supervision. This study emphasizes the importance of synchronizing tax theory, fiscal policy, and administrative capacity to respond to global dynamics. The main contribution lies in the development of a subject- and object-based tax analysis framework and policy implications for the government, academics, and business actors in designing a fair, efficient, and sustainable taxation system.

Abstract

This systematic review synthesizes the research on strategic interventions that foster the growth and sustainability of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). By conducting a comprehensive analysis of twenty studies sourced from high-quality databases, we categorized the findings into nine strategic themes: Human Capital, Technology, Social Capital, Entrepreneurial Orientation, Financial Support and Accessibility, Market Strategy and Expansion, Organizational and Operational Efficiency, Innovation and Product Development, and Gender Equality and Empowerment. Our review highlights the critical role of integrating advanced HR analytics with organizational strategies, leveraging technology for operational efficiency, and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset to enhance dynamic capabilities and innovation within MSMEs. We also underscore the significance of financial accessibility, market expansion strategies, organizational efficiency, product innovation, and gender empowerment in cultivating a competitive edge. Despite the extensive strategies explored, we identified gaps, particularly the lack of empirical research assessing the direct impact of these strategies in different socio-economic contexts, especially within developing nations. Our findings call for targeted policy interventions and future research focused on implementing effective strategies, considering the unique challenges faced by MSMEs in an increasingly digital and globalized economy.

Abstract

Background: Globally, there are 149.2 million children under the age of 5 experiencing growth and developmental disorders (WHO, 2020). Important factors influencing infant growth and development include sleep quality and body weight. One safe and appropriate intervention for infants is baby massage (Fitriyanti, 2024). Baby massage is a gentle and rhythmic massage given to infants, starting with light touches and gradually increasing pressure according to the baby's age. This helps calm the nervous system and reduce stress hormone levels (Rahayu, 2020). Objective: To determine the effect of baby massage on sleep quality and weight gain in infants aged 3–24 months at PMB Ririn, Bengkulu City, in 2025. Method: This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. Data were collected using questionnaires, observation sheets, and growth monitoring charts (KMS). The study sample consisted of 20 infants selected through purposive sampling. Results: Before the intervention, most respondents had poor sleep quality (7 infants or 35%) and fair sleep quality (7 infants or 35%). After the baby massage intervention, most infants showed improvement to good sleep quality (16 infants or 80%). The average body weight before the intervention was 8,140 grams, which increased to an average of 8,875 grams after the intervention—an average gain of 735 grams per month. Bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed that baby massage had a significant effect on improving both sleep quality and infant body weight, with a p-value of 0.000.

Abstract

This thesis examines the impact of tourism development in Pamah Simelir Hamlet, Telagah Village, Langkat Regency. This descriptive qualitative research involves interviews with various related parties to understand the changes that have occurred. The results show significant positive economic impacts, such as increased community income (up to 80% for MSMEs), creation of new jobs, and increased land prices. Socially, there has been increased access to education and health, as well as changes in more open social interactions. However, this development also has negative environmental impacts, including conversion of agricultural land, increased volume of unmanaged waste, and decreased water quality. In addition, coordination with investors is still a challenge. In conclusion, tourism in Pamah Simelir brings great benefits, but requires sustainable management and strong collaboration between the government, managers, and the community to minimize negative impacts and maximize the potential of the region.
